This is an all original rust free desert dry Volkswagen GL Westfalia camper. This factory conversion camper van is fitted with the optional uplevel Wolfsburg Edition trim, and it was the top of the line Volkswagen factory camper for 1984. It features the plush interior cloth seats with an extra bench seat in the middle of the cab. This is a running operatiing Vanagon with the water cooled 4 cylinder engine, manual transmission and air conditioning. The tires hold air and the transmission shifts well through all the gears. It has a sink, stove, and refrigerator. There is a rip in the rear bench seat cushion and a small sunroof sectional panel is missing.

This vehicle has seen infrequent use for the past several years and requires a complete engine tune-up and other periodic maintenance to restore reliable roadworthiness. There are some tears in the pop-up tent near the front fastening zipper. The gas struts which hold the rear hatch in the up position are weak and require replacement. As seen in the pictures, there are dents in the body on both sides, the rear bumper and right rear tail light need replacements. The raised fiberglass roof panel appears to be in excellent original condition.

This Vanagon is an excellent candidate for simple restoration or customization to individual taste. If you have read this auction this far, you know that sound rust-free Vanagons for restoration are difficult to find. When restored, they are very practical and efficient recreational vehicles.

VW considering single, cheaper li-ion cell for all plug-in vehicle batteries

Volkswagen is finding rapid success in the battery electric vehicle market; especially in Europe where the e-Golf is already the segment sales leader. Recent concepts like the C Coupe GTE, Sport Coupe GTE and Cross Coupe GTE suggest more plug-in hybrids from the company are on the way, too. To make future models more economical, the German automotive giant is considering switching to a standard design for its lithium-ion battery cells. Using standardized parts is a long-accepted principle in production because it leads to economies of scale, and a company can pass on the savings to buyers or pocket the money to boost profits. VW is aiming for a massive 66-percent drop in costs by switching to a unified design, according to Heinz-Jakob Neusser, the board member in charge of development, to Automotive News. While the cells would be uniform, they could be crafted into different modules to fit each specific model. VW currently buys cells from Panasonic and Samsung for various models, but under the new plan all of the automaker's brands would switch to a single one. "We have a clear understanding in the group of a common cell," Neusser said, according to Automotive News, without suggesting when a change might happen. VW also has a few months decide on a different future for its EVs. The automaker is reportedly considering whether to use sold-state lithium-ion batteries from a US-based supplier for upcoming models. The next-gen tech could potentially give a massive boost in range while also being fireproof.

Bentley Bentayga bodies to be built in Bratislava

Volkswagen's plant in Bratislava, Slovakia, has come a long way. After getting its start in 1971 by subcontracting the production of Skoda-branded vehicles, the plant was purchased by VW in 1991, where it was quickly put to further good use as it began producing Volkswagen Passat models for export. More recently, Bratislava has become a bastion for SUVs, assembling the Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne, in addition to the VW Touareg. Color us unsurprised, then, to learn that the Bentley Bentayga, which will be built atop the same large SUV platform as its cousins from Audi, Porsche and VW, will also be used for at least part of the production of Bentley's first SUV. Surely, though, one of the hallmarks of the Bentley brand is that its cars are handmade in England. Won't the Bentley-buying populace feel slighted by production in Slovakia? Not to worry. As is the case with the Porsche Cayenne, all that will be produced in Slovakia is the Bentayga's body. According to a report from Automotive News, bodies for the Bentayga will be shipped from Bratislava to Crewe, England, where they will be finished into fully operational vehicles. In order to accommodate the additional work, VW will reportedly invest 500 million euros into the plant in Slovakia and hire hundreds of workers.
