You are viewing a beautiful and original, 1987 Porsche 928 S4. Covering only 82K miles since new, this car has obviously been loved and cared for by its limited number of owners.

This 928 S4 runs and drives beautifully, and boasts all the luxury and power expected from Porsche’s venerable Autobahn Express grand touring machine.

The Porsche 928 was a luxury sports-GT car that was produced from 1978 to 1995. Originally intended to replace the company's iconic 911, the 928 combined the power, poise, and handling of a sports car with the refinement, comfort, and equipment of a luxury sedan to create what some Porsche executives thought would be a vehicle with wider appeal than the compact, quirky and sometimes difficult 911.

The 928 S4 variant debuted in the second half of 1986 as a 1987 model, an updated version of the 5.0 L V8 producing 316 hp, sporting a new larger torque converter (in automatics) and fairly significant styling updates which gave the car a cleaner, sleeker, more refined look.

As stated, this specific example is in wonderful condition, and shows only enough slight patina to confirm its originality, and loving use. Overall, the paint is in great shape, and is predominately all original to the car. Only a couple of areas of notice appear to the discriminating eye: There are a few small door dings along the left rear quarter, noticeable on close examination (paintless dent removal would take care of this), but hard to capture on camera. There is one spot along the edge of the passenger rear window, where the paint has been touched up. Finally (and most disappointingly), there is a small (less than a quarter sized) area on the front right quarter panel top, that a jealous passerby decided to ‘key’ scratch. It has been touched up, but is still noticeable upon close examination. None of these areas are large, or likely even evident to the casual admirer, but I am very picky with my cars, and like to be as upfront as possible. See pics for close ups of all described areas. There is also older window tint, that the next owner can decide whether to keep, replace, or peel off, to go back to clean, stock window clarity.

Inside, the car is beautiful, near spotless, and as nice as you’ll find on a 928. None of the typical trouble spots (dash cracks, worn seats, etc) are here, and the interior condition (often a telltale of the life a 928 has lived) is a testament to the love this car received over the years. Everything functions as it should, as well (including the sunroof!), with just a few small & simple exceptions: The driver side power seat switch is missing, and the passenger side switch is temperamental. Replace them, here on ebay, for under $100 and be done with it. Or use the (included) manual adjustment tool. The A/C works great, and blows cold, but for some reason, it only blows cold to the rear (front and rear AC option on this example). It’s likely just a switch for the ‘blendor’ that needs replaced. Depending on your climate, the rear blower will cool the car off. There is a nice, modern and updated Alpine stereo, with cd & ipod interface, that works great, and sounds awesome. Everything else about the interior is near excellent, and as one would expect in a well-cared for car of this age & miles.

Mechanically, as stated, the car always starts right up, and runs and drives beautifully. A few things that have been done in the last 5-6 years are: timing belt, brake pads, shoes, tires, spark plugs & wires, battery, water & fuel pump. The timing belt has recently been inspected, and looks to be in very good shape, but that being said, and this being an ‘interference’ type engine, my strong recommendation would be that the buyer consider replacing the timing belt, tensioner, rollers, and water pump, immediately upon purchase, and consider the cost to do so when placing their bid. The ‘belt tension’ warning light has come on a couple of times when driving, and I have spotted a couple of small drips that appear to be coolant, so it is my opinion that it should all be done, and done properly, for years of trouble and worry free future driving. Better safe than sorry, and I'm a big proponent of preventative maintenance. This way, the owner will know exactly when it was completed, as sometimes age can be as deteriorating as miles on these rubber belts  (unfortunately records to not accompany the car, so I cannot verify any changes or improvements, except that which is evident to the eye).

Overall, this is a fantastic example of a rare and original Porsche 928 S4. Good examples of these cars are getting increasingly difficult to find. Tired, neglected and bargain priced 928s (or any classic car, really) will always end up costing more, so it’s best to start with a good example, and improve it as you enjoy it. Any collector car enthusiast already knows what’s happened with Porsche 356 & early 911 cars. Most agree that the 928 is slated to be one of the next models to begin the rapid acceleration in value. Two factors would strongly back this theory up. First, the current early Porsche values have priced the casual or beginning collector car enthusiast out of the market (not everyone has $100K+ for a weekend car). Secondly, the 928 was one of the cars that the kids of the ‘80s dreamt of. These kids are today’s next generation of enthusiasts. The S4 is the epitome of the 928 platform (save for the $75-90K 928 GTS). Own one reasonably now, while you still can. Offered here at NO RESERVE!!

I encourage all potential buyers to come inspect the car in person prior to buying or bidding. Feel free to call me with any questions or for more information. Car condition is subjective. I have owned over 50 Porsches, and am picky about my cars, but potential owners should decide for themselves if this car is for them. Car is sold AS IS, WHERE IS. I can help with very reasonable shipping arrangements, but transportation is ultimately the responsibility of the buyer. Zero or negative feedback bidders please contact me prior to bidding or your bid may be cancelled. Please only bid or offer if you are serious. Finally, feel free to email or call me at 574-361-5315 with any questions, more details, or if you'd like to make an offer. Good luck!

I've had a few inquiries for higher resolution pictures (ebay lowers res for the listing), which I'm happy to send to anyone who would like to forward me their email address. Also, I do have ALL the original keys, including the valet & wheel lock keys, that, of course, all come with the car!

Dan Neil pokes fun at the celeb cars of 2014

Sun, Dec 28 2014

Look, we try really hard not to pay any attention to the Kardashians and their vapid reality TV empire. But, as troubling as that brood may be, occasionally we're impressed and/or horrified by their four-wheeled conveyances. In fact, that curiosity extends beyond talentless reality stars with rotund glutes to celebs in general. That's why we're enjoying Dan Neil's sometimes biting take on the celebrity cars of 2014. Besides paying tribute to Kim K, husband Kanye West and the adorable Lamborghini that their spawn rides about in, Neil also takes a look at LeBron James' turn as a Kia spokesman and boxer Floyd Mayweather's trio of Bugatti Veyrons. Matthew McConaughey is a focus of Neil's as well, thanks to his oft-panned advertisements for Lincoln (and the raucous parodies they inspired), before finishing on the high, with Jerry Seinfeld and his new Porsche 918 Spyder. Take a look at Neil's recap of the celebrity cars of 2014. News Source: The Wall Street Journal Celebrities Humor Bugatti Kia Lamborghini Lincoln Porsche Videos porsche 918 spyder celebrity dan neil

What's the deal with all these Porsches Seinfeld is selling?

Mon, Feb 8 2016

In case you haven't been able to tell from watching Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee, Jerry Seinfeld is as fanatical about automobiles as he is about comedy. The man has one of the most enviable Porsche collections in the world. But now he's preparing to auction off a significant share of them, and Gooding & Company, the auction house handling the sale, has just released the full list. We got our first look at some of them a couple of weeks ago, including a 550 Spyder, a 356 Speedster, and a 911 IROC RSR – all of them valued in the millions. But that's only the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Other Porsches from the Seinfeld collection set to cross the auction block include a 917/30 Can-Am Spyder, a 718 RSK, a Carrera GT prototype and a 962C racer. There are old and new 911s aplenty, a handful of 356s, even a 597 Jagdwagen and a couple of 1960s VWs thrown in for good measure. You can scope out the full list in the press release below and view some of them in the gallery above. And if you have the funds and the inclination, Amelia Island will be the place to be next month. Here's hoping it all works out better for the proud new owners than that time George thought he had bought Jon Voight's Chrysler LeBaron. This content is hosted by a third party. Porsche, Hyundai and GM impress in J.D. Power Initial Quality Study, Fiat and Jeep don't

Wed, 18 Jun 2014

Consumers continue to struggle with the advanced user interfaces and technologies being fitted to new cars, according to the latest J.D. Power Initial Quality Study. Overall, the industry average for problems per 100 vehicles climbed three percent, to 116 issues reported in the first 90 days of ownership.
Vehicles from the General Motors' family were dominant, with Buick, Chevrolet and GMC capturing more individual IQS segment awards than any other manufacturer. Despite its well-publicized issues, six GM vehicles (Buick Encore, Chevrolet Malibu, Chevy Silverado HD, Chevy Suburban, GMC Terrain and GMC Yukon) were given IQS awards for their respective segments.
Hyundai was ranked the best overall mass-market brand, with just 94 issues in every 100 vehicles reported in the first 90 days. Parent Hyundai Motor Company, meanwhile, trailed GM with five vehicles winning their segments, including the Hyundai Accent, Elantra and Genesis, as well as the Kia Cadenza and Sportage.
