Here is a rare example of classic Mercedes engineering and design, a 1991 560SEC Coupe finished in Brilliant Silver Metallic, trimmed out in Royal Blue. It has traveled 90k original, documented miles by 4 owners and comes with all maintenance records.  Here is your chance to own one of these great and rare coupes that has not been abused, not been neglected and that comes with a binder full of service records, including original window sticker ($82,000) and original bill of sale ($75,000).  If you know anything at all about these automobiles, you know that you only want one with service records like this one.
Originally purchased at Mercedes Benz of Shreveport, LA, the car has the stamped maintenance booklet until the 75k mile service and there are Independent service records since. Recent work within the past 24 months includes: ALL fluids changed, new hood insulation pad, motor mounts, flex disks, rear main seal, rear crankshaft seal, AC service, new OEM accumulator, new OEM radiator, new spark plugs, new OEM fuel pumps. Transmission removed in September of ‘12 to replace “reverse” rubber flanges and serviced at that time (2000 miles since) this automobile needs absolutely nothing to drive anywhere, it has been lovingly maintained its entire life and it shows.
Exterior: re-painted by previous owner, the paintwork and correct color presents beautifully. There are two areas on front bumper (see photos) where paint is cracked and chipped and also on lower bumper fascia.
Interior: Leather is supple and a deep polished blue throughout, drivers left side bolster shows some wear but no tears or cracks. Wood trim is beautiful - The shifter plate piece has the common small stress cracks (2). The dash is pristine and has no cracks. Carpeting is in perfect condition and is plush and as new. The headliner is gorgeous with absolutely no sag or problem areas. First aid kit is present, never opened. All buttons, switches, lights and options are in working order; EVERYTHING WORKS and I mean everything.  Heated seats operate perfectly. Trunk is pristine, smells new, original tool kit intact.
Mechanicals: The engine and transmission perform flawlessly - idle is smooth. Steering and suspension are tight with the addition of K&R springs and new Hydraulic Compensators.  There is absolutely no shake; vibration or pull in steering wheel and car comes to a straight stop even under firm breaking. Sunroof and all 4 windows operate as designed.  All HVAC settings such as the “AUTO” function are in perfect working order and the ambient temperature sensor samples and adjusts fan speed as designed. All service and courtesy lighting is in working order. Seat belt presenters operate as designed.  All fluids are all OEM quality, 100%.  The car is a pleasure to drive around town or is an absolute Autobahn speedster on the highway.  Overall the car is in excellent condition - having a patina that is consistent with the car’s age keeping in mind that the car is an un-restored, original 21-year-old example.

There is no shortage of information online for discussion, repairs, restoration and maintenance - as well as cult-like following of this elegant beast: mbcoupes.com, sec-shop.com, Mbworld.org.  These were the last of the hand-built Mercedes-Benz automobiles from Stuttgart, Germany and their goal in creating the 560 S.E.C. was simply, “To design the finest coupe ever made.”  YOU WILL NOT FIND ANOTHER 560 SEC LIKE THIS ONE - METICULOUSLY MAINTAINED – PRISTINE CONDITION  – LOW, 90,000 miles.
Fly in to Napa Valley and drive it home, you will not be disappointed.

Consumer Reports selling its road-tested roadsters [w/video]

Thu, 31 Jan 2013

Here's a chance to acquire a celebrity-owned vehicles, and this time at a discount instead of a premium. So the celebrity in this case is Consumer Reports, that magazine that could be equally adored and abhored by car enthusiasts. CR buys all of its test vehicles and usually finds willing second owners within its own ranks, but its opening its small used-car lot to the public. On the forecourt are four roadsters: an automatic 2012 Audi TT 2.0 TFSI Quattro S-Tronic with 6,600 miles for $36,500, a manual 2012 BMW Z4 sDrive28i with 8,400 miles for $45,000, a manual 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK250 for $39,500 and a manual 2013 Porsche Boxster with 7,000 miles for $48,000.
Those numbers mean a savings of $9,000 to $10,000 before haggling - each car is listed with an "Asking price" so there could be some wiggle room if you show up with pockets full of dough and eyes full of serious intent. Since the money CR earns from the sales go back into the magazine's budget to buy more test cars, however, it probably won't take any oddball trades, so you can forget about getting any purchasing help from that track-day AMC Javelin project on blocks in the back yard.
The vehicles have been taken care of and spiffed up for sale; buyers will take delivery at the CR test track in East Haddam, Connecticut and get a tour of the facilities. While you're there they'll even take you on a lap around the track so you can feel how your car handles when driven by one of its testers. They will probably not help you with advice on which toaster and dehumidifier to buy - you'll still need to get a subscription for that. Have a look at the video below to see a day in the life of a CR test car.

Rare Isdera Imperator 108i flexes its considerable muscles

Mon, 05 Aug 2013

The Isdera Imperator 108i is a remarkably rare supercar from the late 80s and early 90s. Born of a Mercedes-Benz concept car, it's powered by a range of AMG-developed V8s, with five to six liters of displacement, depending on the engine. The example shown here, lapping the legendary Spa-Francorchamps circuit, features the most potent 6.0-liter V8 available. And rather than just being driven about on a perfectly clean racing line, it's freaking power sliding!
Yes, there's something eternally childlike about a wedge-shaped supercar from our formative years being flung about a Belgian racetrack. Adding to the appeal is the Imperator's stumpy, periscopic rear mirror, sticking out of the roof. Even after being out of production for 20 years, this is still a wild, wild car and we'd happily snap up the opportunity pilot one of the 36 Isderas that were built. Take a look below for the full video from Spa.
