230 CE Coupe

Rare Euro model

VIN: WDB1232431A236125

Here’s another rare, great-running & driving Mercedes we’ve acquired recently for our Ebay customers.  This nice coupe was legally imported in December, 1984 and has spent the last 30 years driving our salt-free Pacific Northwest roads.  From the moment I first laid eyes on this clean car, it was obvious that it’s received respect and care over a lifetime.  Reluctantly, the long-term owner passed the Mercedes along to us a few weeks ago as they downsized their household.  I’ve got to tell you, having driven it daily for the past week, what a treat!  Where else will you find this kind of luxury, vintage style, safety, mechanical reliability AND economy wrapped up in one gorgeous ride?  Please feel free to contact me with questions or to make an offer.  My name is Mark Thompson and my direct phone number is 206/914-1173.  You’re welcome and encouraged to make an appointment to inspect and drive this outstanding car here at my Auburn warehouse facility

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION

Ever driven one of these Mercedes with the powerful, yet thrifty 2.3 liter engine?  Smooth is the word for sure.  Smooth powerful acceleration.  Smooth handling in the curves or on the highway, too.  When looking under the hood, most knowledgeable Mercedes lovers will instantly recognize the engine as being the same motor found in the popular 190 series “Baby Benz” sedans sold back then in the U.S. (making repair parts easy to find if needed).  I’ve also always considered these W123 chassis coupes as really the last hand-built, truly high-quality Mercedes and have heard many others say the same thing!  Please look at my photos; I’m sure you’ll agree with me    about what a find this is!  What you see is the result of a wash and vacuum only.  It’s obviously been allowed to spend a majority of its life garaged because the overall condition is superior.  Rust?  Please, this Benz hates rust and you WON’T find a thing to worry about here.  Yes, the Northwest is famous for rain, but our winter roads are never salted.  We only have one or two days of light snow each year.  Everyone panics and stays home.  Climb over, under and all around this car - I know you’ll come up smiling!!

Having personally owned more than twenty Mercedes over the years, I’ve developed a great appreciation for their style, mechanical reliability and overall driving experience.  THIS CAR RUNS OUT JUST AS IT WAS MEANT TO. I’VE NEVER DRIVEN ANY VINTAGE COUPE THAT I’VE LIKED BETTER!!  I’m convinced you’ll be proud to own and drive it as well.

CONDITION:

In total, this is a clean, well-cared-for, smoke-free car.  I take great pride in the vehicles we sell and feel that you should know as much about it as possible.  Accordingly, here’s a list of the good and also small things needing attention: Turn the key and the strong 2.3L fuel injected inline-four engine fires right up every time!   The automatic transmission shifts strongly and just as it should. The car idles, runs and drives like a Mercedes is supposed to – strong oil pressure, good battery and charging system, no overheating, no brake pull to either side or alignment issues!   I’ve put on almost 500 miles over the past three weeks including a trip to Portland cruising at 65 MPH down and back for six hours.

We received a copy of work done at a 60K major service in 2004 totaling $3,165 that we’ll pass along with the title.  This included replacement of: Upper and lower control arms, front & rear shocks, rear sway bar link, all engine & transmission mounts, new water pump, thermostat, the double timing chain & tensioner, all fluids/filters flushed and replaced(including tranny, differential, engine & brakes), new belts, ignition rotor & cap, sparkplugs. Another receipt shows the muffler and tailpipe were replaced a few months earlier.

The paint has received one quality re-spray and is in very good condition as shown.  Very nice chrome and exterior trim all around, too!  The front fenders, doors, rear quarters, trunk and floor pans are all solid; in fact the entire undercarriage is in fine condition for a 30 year-old car!  No other exterior body flaws to point out except a cracked left taillight lense.  All the glass is good; no cracks or rock chips.  The factory wheels are straight and true. They’re wrapped with 195/70R14 radials with at least 50% tread remaining.  The jack & spare are in the trunk as shown in the photo.

Take another good look at the interior shots.  Hop in and feel comfortable sitting on these firm front buckets for hours as the springs and original fabric covers have held up far better than most.   There’s little to no wear on either front bucket.  The rear seat is just as nice.  I don’t know if the odometer is reflecting true miles, but both it and the speedo work perfectly.  There’s no evidence of any water leakage on the headliner and the large sunroof opens and closes from the dash switch.  Both door windows are electric and work great.  The smaller rears are hand crank and also move up and down effortlessly.

You’d think that based on the initial cost and overall quality of a Mercedes that the Daimler factory would have little difficulty coming up with a quality, long-lasting stereo for their cars.  Even their modern vehicles seem to have an issue with radios so it’s not surprising that the former owner changed out the original Becker stereo for a nice Pioneer CD/AM/FM model some time ago.

I’m always very happy to work with any shipper you choose, but you’re also welcome to do what many of my previous buyers from as far away as Alaska, Arizona, the Midwest, Canada, Florida, New York and even the Mexican Baja have done – fly in here to Seattle (We’ll pick you up at Sea-Tac International just a few miles away) and then start a road trip home the same day!  As a respected Ebay seller with many, many satisfied online buyers, I want you to bid with confidence knowing that this Benz runs and drives as it should AND that it is being properly represented to you!  Please don’t be upset if I miss a minor flaw or some small issue comes up on the car as NO used vehicle is perfect.  Having said that, I won’t hesitate to drive long distance again in this Mercedes!

Please check the photos over closely and call me with any questions BEFORE you place a bid!  You’re encouraged to stop by, inspect the car at my Auburn, Washington warehouse and take it for a test drive.  As always, it is being sold “as-is, where-is” with a clean, free & clear Washington State title.

A Few Additional Terms and Conditions:

Because of the amount of money involved with a vehicle purchase, I reserve the right to cancel your bid if you have any negative feedback.  I also ask that potential bidders with a feedback rating of five or fewer transactions on Ebay contact me before placing their bid.  Please feel free to contact me directly thru EBay’s system or, as outlined above, call me at 206/914-1173 anytime.  My name is MARK THOMPSON.

A nonrefundable $500 deposit is due within 48 hours of the auction’s end.  We can accept PAYPAL, but only for the deposit amount because of the high fees they charge.  The balance is due by cash or certified funds within seven business days unless prior arrangements have been made with me.   Please remember you are bidding to buy and I fully expect the winning bidder to fulfill their Ebay contract!  You’re not bidding to hold or then come inspect and test-drive the vehicle later -- You’re more than welcome to do this before the auction ends.

If you do decide to have the Benz shipped home, there are numerous vehicle transport companies to choose from.  We deal with them regularly and I'd suggest that you get a transport bid from Dependable Auto Shippers (DAS).  They're EBay’s preferred transporter and will give you a fair quote.  Call my designated rep, Janice, directly at (469)587-5096.  Give her my affiliate number (2362642) and she can pull up all our information for door-to-door or even station-to-station price quotes.

As an alternative, you might also get bids from the U-Ship.com website.  You’ll be able to choose a transport broker from multiple offers.  The zip code for pick-up would be 98002 (Auburn, Washington).  The shipping of the vehicle and company chosen are the responsibility of the BUYER

The Mercedes can be stored free of charge at my location for up to two weeks after the auction ends assuming full payment has been received.  After that period storage is $20 per day.

AMG-powered Aston Martins still years away

Mon, 16 Sep 2013

After flirting for several years, Mercedes-Benz and Aston Martin have finally tied the knot. Just don't expect to see any offspring to result from the union for at least three or four years.
This according to Auto Express, which spoke with Daimler chief Dr. Dieter Zetsche at the Frankfurt Motor Show last week. AE reports that a new range of AMG-developed turbocharged V8s, transmissions and electrical components will make their way into the successors to the current V8 Vantage and DB9, but that these models are still a few years off.
Purists might balk at the thought of a Mercedes-powered Aston holding true to the brand's heritage. But while David Brown (for whom the DB range is named) may have steered clear of shoehorning in Detroit muscle into his cars, the entirety of the company's current range is powered by engines borrowing technology from Ford, and that arrangement seems to have worked well for Aston until now. And if you're still skeptical, look no further than Pagani and its AMG-sourced engines and you should have all the proof you need that the new relationship between Daimler and Aston could be a success.

Twin-turbo Cadillac CTS coming

Mercedes to roll out C63 AMG late in 2014 with 4.0L V8

Mon, 30 Dec 2013

The new 2014 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is upon us, launching initially in North America with turbocharged four-cylinder C300 4Matic and six-cylinder C400 4Matic flavors. But that's only the tip of the proverbial iceberg when it comes to the vast array of powertrain configurations that will be offered in the new C-Class in markets around the world. Orders will soon be rolling in for gasoline, hybrid and diesel engines with four, six or eight cylinders, driving the rear wheels or all four, with the seven-speed automatic transmission soon to be replaced by a new nine-speed unit. But what enthusiasts are really looking forward to is the next C63 AMG.
As BMW has done with the M3 (and new M4), Mercedes has gradually ratcheted up the cylinder count in its AMG C-Class, graduating from the 3.6-liter V6 in the original C36 AMG to the 4.3-liter V8 in the C43 AMG, then the 5.5-liter V8 in the C55 AMG before going the distance with the sublime 6.2-liter V8 in the C63 AMG. Like its rivals, Mercedes is expected to use turbochargers as a replacement for displacement in the next model, but unlike its Bavarian rival, it won't be losing any cylinders in the process.
Skipping the 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 that has gone on to power other AMG models, the next C63 AMG is still expected to introduce a new 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 producing between 450 and 500 horsepower. It'll also reportedly keep the same seven-speed automatic transmission (instead of switching to the new nine-speed), but the jury's still out on whether it'll come with rear- or all-wheel drive (or offer buyers the choice). The downsized V8 - codenamed M177 - is then expected to find its way into other models, but the C-Class will be the first to get it when it arrives before the end of the new year ahead.
