The Particulars:

The above is a brief description of our 1997 GMC Sierra SLE Z71 (K1500) pickup truck. I bought this truck used in May of 2001. It is currently owned by my 71 year old Father, who has driven it for the last six years. It is a Virginia truck, purchased new in Woodbridge VA. It then lived with me for a while in Leesburg, VA, then spent a couple years in Maryland, a couple in Pennsylvania, and finally went with my Father to New Castle, VA. Since 2003, I had used it as a farm truck, and drove it very little. My Father does service work for condominiums, and has driven it every day for the last six years. You read the mileage correctly - it has 320,505 miles. Nevertheless, it is a great runner, very strong, and has pulled our 2 horse trailer with ease around here and to North Carolina and back. The Z 71 package is awesome. The limited slip rear and auto locking front differentials make it a very hard truck to get stuck... Overall I'd give it a "fair condition" rating (see below for more details). I never list with reserves, so if you snag this truck for the minimum bid of $999.00, you will have gotten one heck of a good deal.

A color-matched aluminum utility cap will go with the truck if the selling price reaches $1,200 or more! See photos. It is a highly functional and nice looking cap with locking side doors and ladder racks. The cap (like the truck) shows signs of wear including scratches, dents, a portion of the ladder rack is bent, etc.

The body is in good shape with the exception of one dent in the bed behind the passenger door, and some scratching on the tailgate, hood and passenger side front fender (see pictures). Otherwise there are no major dents, scrapes, etc., but there are certainly scratches and dings which are normal for a vehicle of this age & mileage. The interior is reasonably clean, but is certainly not "detailed". There are tears and some small burns in the seat (see pictures), and a few stains in the headliner, but other than that, the interior is in fairly good shape. The good news: Many Chevy / GMC trucks this age are rusted through at the cab corners. The cab corners on this truck are (miraculously) still solid. Other than a few small rust spots around the windshield, the body is rust free. Again, this is very uncommon, particularly for the age and mileage.

There are a few minor mechanical "quirks": The AC compressor leaks and needs charging or possibly replacing (the AC is currently not functioning, but the heat works fine). The engine has had no major work, and is very strong. It does use about a quart of oil every 1,500 miles or so (not uncommon for very high mileage vehicles). Since it had about 80,000 miles, it has always benefited from full synthetic oil, which probably has a lot to do with why it still runs well with that many miles. There is a small exhaust leak at the manifold, which can be heard, but is not loud. The "check engine" light is on, and has been on for at least 150,000 miles. These trucks are known for this sort of thing - it does not require an emissions inspection in Virginia, so both my Dad and I have always just let that light go... The front tires are in decent shape, but the truck has always worn the inside or outside edges out prematurely. You will note the uneven wear in the pictures. The rear tires are in very good shape. As noted above, the transmission was replaced in the summer of 2013. Both universal joints were replaced in February, and several other smaller things. Dad knew he was selling the truck and wanted to feel confident that it was in good running order for its new owner.

The truck is certainly not perfect, but it is in amazing condition for its age and its mileage. As with all of my listings, I have gone out of my way to point out the "flaws" here. If you have any questions, please call me at 610 806 3954. Also, you are encouraged to come see / test drive the truck. I am not a mechanic, and nothing you see above should be construed as a mechanic's opinion. If you would like to have your mechanic look at the truck, I would encourage that as well. The truck is located in Cochranville, PA, which is roughly in between Baltimore and Philadelphia.

There are NO WARRANTIES, EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED on this vehicle. the vehicle is being sold with a clear title, as is, where is. Again, you are encouraged to come have a look, or have your mechanic do so, please call me at 610 806 3954

Thanks for looking and again, please don't hesitate to call me with any questions, etc. at 610 806 3954.

GM warning 800,000 owners that their cars may need oil changes more frequently than they say

Fri, 05 Apr 2013

The days of changing your engine oil every 3,000 miles are long gone thanks to most cars having automatic oil monitoring systems, but about 800,000 General Motors vehicles apparently have incorrect monitoring software that is leading to premature engine component wear. According to Autoweek, certain 2010-2012 Buick LaCrosse, Regal, Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain models equipped with 2.4-liter four-cylinder engines could be going too long in between oil changes resulting in a higher-than-normal number of warranty claims for the engine's balance chain. The balance chain links the balance shaft to the crankshaft, and a worn one can produce higher noise levels.
As a fix, GM dealers will be reprogramming the software for the monitors in an effort to reduce the interval between oil changes, which varies based on driving habits and conditions. Through February 2015, the software update will be done at no cost to vehicle owners, but since this is not a recall, after that point, it will be up to the discretion of dealers as to whether or not they will charge for the service. What isn't immediately clear is whether GM plans on giving assistance to out-of-warranty customers who are experiencing engine issues from the worn chain.

Big And Boxy Might Be Best
As immense fans of the Back to the Future trilogy, we sometimes like to envision an alternate timeline in which General Motors had killed off GMC and kept Pontiac instead. The G8 GXP would still be on the road handily beating German sport sedans costing twice as much, while the lowly G3 would morph into a true subcompact-killer based on what is now the Chevrolet Sonic RS. While we're at it, let's go ahead and imagine the G6 has become the best-selling car in the US and the Torrent crossover is selling 20,000+ units per month. Far-fetched, we know.
The thing is, these fanciful statements would have to be true to make the case against keeping GMC. Pontiac may have offered more excitement than GMC, but money talks, and a full line of trucks, crossovers and SUVs have made a lot more money for GM than the arrowhead brand ever did. How much? As we learned last month, about two-thirds of GM's global profits came from its fullsize trucks, and GMC's trucks typically have thicker margins than their Chevrolet counterparts.

PickupTrucks.com's latest test results in a familiar winner [w/video]

Wed, 19 Jun 2013

PickupTrucks.com has gone and thrown the latest batch of half-ton pickups into a cage match to see who would come out on top. The site put the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, 2013 Ford F-150, Ram 1500, Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan through a battery of tests. Those included 0-60 miles per hour acceleration, 60-0 mph deceleration, fuel economy, a hill climb, and payload and towing. They even threw the rigs on an autocross course to evaluate overall handling. Each truck was given points based on how it scored in each evaluation.
Who came out on top? Somewhat surprisingly, the 2013 Ford F-150 walked away with the gold, though fewer than 50 points separated first and fourth place. Head over to PickupTrucks.com to read the full evaluation and the final results. You may be shocked to see exactly where some of the segment's newest additions placed. You can also watch a video on the test below.
