1964 Chevrolet Corvair Rampside Pickup Nice on 2040-cars

Year:1964 Mileage:85930
Location:

Colorado Springs, Colorado, United States

Colorado Springs, Colorado, United States

Here is a pretty rare 1964 Chevrolet Corvair Rampside pickup. 1964 was the last year for the Rampside, and only 850 were built. About 140 are said to remain.

This one is a nice looking driver. It came from Oregon, and the previous owner had a Maaco paint job done. Looks great from 10 feet but does have some minor blemishes and dings.
No serious rust, only a few small areas. Under side of left rear corner panel has some rust out. Also left side under engine cover has some rust perforation. Nothing structural or serious.
Underbody is solid.

Previous owner also installed a 65-66 140 h.p. four carburetor engine which runs great and is very peppy. Two of the carb ports are blocked off. Both carbs were professionally rebuilt.
It has two Harley-Davidson mufflers which work well and give the engine a great sound. The four speed transmission has the later design shifter and works well, along with the clutch.  I resealed the engine, but it still leaks a little from the oil pan and transmission. Fresh oil and all filters changed. Has electric fuel pump.

Almost everything works on this pickup, including the original accessory windshield washer with under dash fluid reservoir. The original AM radio sounds good. All lights, both inside and outside are working. The left turn signal does have to be cancelled manually. Also, the fuel gauge s not working. The gas tank was cleaned and sealed by previous owner.

Tires have decent tread, but are pretty old and probably not worthy of a long highway trip. Glass is all good. The windshield does have a wiper scuff mark. Brakes work well and I recently replaced the master cylinder. The four latches for the ramp and tailgate work fine.

Overall this is a very sharp looking pickup. Not a perfect show vehicle, just a good running original driver which attracts a lot of attention. Clear Colorado title in my name, but not plated.

General Motors shaking up its marketing... again

Wed, 13 Mar 2013

One of the things that dogs the full comeback of General Motors is the instability of its marketing. That part of the automaker got yet another big shakeup today when GM confirmed what I have been tweeting for a few days - strong rumors that the Chevrolet and Cadillac ad accounts are walking to new ad agencies.
Cadillac, GM's luxury brand, is going into review from Fallon Worldwide, Minneapolis and the indications are that Campbell-Ewald, Chevy's old ad shop, will end up with most or all of it. C-E just announced that it was moving from its long-time home in Warren, MI to a new downtown Detroit office next to Ford Field, just blocks from GM.
The other shoe to drop shortly will be the shift of GM's most important brand, Chevy, from Goodby, Silverstein & Partners of San Francisco to McCann-Erickson of Troy, MI. McCann used to be the agency for Buick and GMC, as well as GM's corporate advertising, and has retained some pieces of business over the last few years. Sources have even told us that it was McCann that did a lot of the creative work on Chevy's new ad platform, Find New Roads. (Not to be confused with a former McCann tagline for Saab, "Find Your Own Road.")

Watch this creative way to pull a truck's engine

Fri, 08 Mar 2013

Living in an apartment complex has its benefits, but for shade-tree mechanics who like/need to work on their own cars, it definitely has a number of disadvantages. Relatively simple tasks such as brake jobs and oil changes are difficult when you don't have dedicated driveway space, to say nothing of more in-depth repairs... like pulling an engine, for example.
For these types of challenges, a little ingenuity and plenty of muscle are needed to get the job done. Scroll down to watch these four men snatch the V8 out of a Chevrolet K1500 using nothing but a chain, landscape timber and good ol' fashioned brute strength. Good work, gentlemen.

Diesel Power finds the ultimate modified oil-burner

Sat, 24 Aug 2013

For nine years, Diesel Power magazine has run the Diesel Power Challenge, this year's grindfest being "a week-long torture test that features seven events, nine trucks, 8,000 horsepower, and nearly 15,000 pound-feet of torque." The road to being crowned "the most powerful truck" starts with a dyno run, and then continues through the completion of a CDL-style obstacle course, an eighth-of-a-mile drag race while towing a 10,000-pound trailer, a quarter-mile drag race without a trailer, a fuel economy test in the mountains and finally a sled-pulling test through a 300-foot-long packed-mud pit.
What kind of trucks get into such a fight? Last year's winner, for instance - who upgraded his truck this year to prove he didn't "luck into the win" - drives a 2008 Ford F-250 Super Duty with a 6.4-liter Power Stroke V8 upgraded with a custom intake, Elite Diesel triple turbos and a two-stage nitrous system. Another competitor has a 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 powered by a 5.9-liter Cummins inline-six, upgraded with Garrett turbos, dual-stage nitrous, a seven-inch exhaust stack and twin fans built into the bed to cool the Sun Coast Omega transmission. The numbers on that truck: 1,255 horsepower, and 2,063 pound-feet of torque at the wheels. Naturally, as the image above might suggest, things don't always end well.
You'll find all five videos covering this years challenge below. A scene in the dyno video sums it all up perfectly: a competitor leaves his nitrous on too long and the crew is treated to some ominous poppings, he leans out the window, throws both hands up and shouts, "Amer'ca!"
