 1991 BMW 850i - (Alexandria, VA)

Hello Fellow Enthusiast:

The 850i was a technological showcase, boasting cutting-edge luxury features such as dual-zone climate control, a power tilt-and-telescope steering wheel, a twelve-speaker stereo, and windows that automatically closed at high speeds. An active five-link rear suspension helped steer the 850i at the limit, and an early form of electronic stability control helped keep the big coupe on course. Under the hood, an aluminum-block, 5.0-liter V-12 used the industry's only drive-by-wire electronic throttles and was attached to one of the world's first six-speed automatic transmissions.

I am selling my 1991 850i and it has been an absolute joy to own. It turns many heads!  The vehicle is in excellent condition and has been well maintained. The leather is near perfect and has no rips or tears. The instrumentation is all OEM and looks good.  The leather is black and looks excellent against the HARD TO FIND Calypso Red.
My research found that the Calypso Red was one of the most sought after colors rolling off the assembly line.

The car was painted by the previous owner 5 or so years back and it looks great!  A real classic vehicle that looks fresh off the assembly line.  The car stops traffic and turn heads.  I have the Car Fax and there have not been any major accidents.  I will share that back in 2004 there was some "minor" damage to the bumper and is noted as such on the Car Fax.  Other than this, there have been no other accidents or issues with the vehicle.  I also just had the car Virginia inspected and it passed with no issues.

The engine runs quiet and strong! It is an hard to find automatic transmission! It is smooth and handles beautifully. The car has been maintained by J&F motors in Alexandria.

I selling the car as I need a daily commuter vehicle.  I love this car and you will too. I am torn listing this car but my commute is lengthening and need something more economical. Additionally, this car is becoming collectible and would be best tucked away in a garage.

I have invested roughly $7,000 in the car and I have no more to give.  I feel that vehicle is now ready to go mechanically but BMW's are for a true enthusiast with the financial horsepower to properly take care of them.  For me, I just don't have the time or resources to keep things going.  In all honestly, I made a bad call investing this much money in the car to only let it go but I have to move on at this point. I need more miles to the gallon as I am moving further away from work.

I want to share that the windshield motor is not working properly.  I took it to J&F and the motor will cost around $500. This was my breaking point.
I have limited access to my 2nd family vehicle so rain is an issue for me.
The good news is that the new owner will be getting a highly updated vehicle.  All done in a very short period of time.
In all honestly, this will be a heck of a 850i for someone.  I have receipts for all of the repairs.

I am trying to disclose everything but I can honestly say that you will not be disappointed.  I am more than fine with a visit or an accompanied test drive.  I actually encourage you to come by if possible.
I will enjoy showing off the car.

Recent work performed by J&F: (all within the last year - most within last 3 to 4 months)

-New Control Arms and Bushings:-- $934.00
-Vent Hoses, Gaskets, Fan Clutch, etc.: $1,987.77

-Belts and Hoses:  $150.00
-Front tires:  $556.00 - Bridgestone
-Horn: $115.00
-Drive Shaft and Mounts: $1220.00

The rear tires were replaced on November 25, 2013 and the front tires were done in August 2013.  The front tires have has approximately 100 miles on them.
The car only has 107k miles.

Thanks for looking and good luck.  Feel free to email if you need a picture of something.

Old vs. new debate gets new life with $25,000 Fiesta ST vs. E46 M3 showdown

Fri, 10 Jan 2014

You know who you are. There's probably a few of you reading; the ones that say, "Why would I spend $27,000 on a new Mazda MX-5 when I could get a used Chevrolet Corvette with more power." Yes, we're talking to you, used car proponents. While it is a fair argument, it's not like used cars don't come with drawbacks of their own, though.
In an attempt to put this new-versus-used argument to bed once and for all, Matt Farah of the The Smoking Tire has picked up a pair of $25,000 cars - a used, but lightly modified, 2003 BMW M3 and a 2013 Ford Fiesta ST. Naturally, there's a comparison.
Farah, as he's wont to do, does get into the nitty gritty of what each car is like to drive, and discusses the merits of used and new-car shopping. But as he rightly points out while testing the M3, "So, it is a good car. But like any used car, it really does depend on the individual car."

BMW shows off 435i Coupe with M Performance parts

Sat, 20 Jul 2013

Greetings from the famous Circuito do Estoril racetrack in Portugal. We're here to put the 2014 BMW 4 Series coupe through its paces, and we'll have the chance to sample the updated 2014 BMW M5 with its new Competition Pack, as well. But before going out for some hot laps, we took a few minutes to check out this 435i Coupe that's been fitted with a full suite of goodies from the BMW M Performance parts catalog.
Starting with the exterior, carbon fiber bits are the most noticeable additions, with the lightweight material added in the form of a massive front splitter, mirror caps and a rear spoiler. Other visual changes include lightweight 20-inch wheels, a blacked-out grille, and unique M Performance side stripes. No, that's not a shadow you see under the 435i's strong side character line - that's a stripe. Yes, we're serious.
Inside (we couldn't get photos of the interior, sorry!), BMW has added its sport steering wheel with race display, unique M floormats, steel pedals, and a whole mess of carbon fiber and Alcantara trim.

Next BMW X1 moving to smaller, lighter FWD-biased platform

Thu, 20 Feb 2014

BMW's decision to make the upcoming 2-Series Active Tourer front-wheel drive has been polarizing to say the least, but like it or not, that is the direction the company will go in the near future - one rumor put the number as high as 23 front-wheel-drive models for Mini and BMW combined. The next-generation X1 won't send all its power to the front wheels, though, when it launches in early 2016. While it will use the same platform as the Active Tourer, rumors suggest all models will use all-wheel drive - at least at launch.
A "high-ranking," unnamed BMW manager confirmed to AutoWeek that the new model will switch to transversely-mounted three- and four-cylinder engines and the same six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic transmissions as the Active Tourer. The new, smaller platform will allow for more efficient packaging, and despite the smaller size, interior space will remain comparable. All the changes should make it significantly lighter too.
Don't start wailing just yet because BMW surely won't be entirely abandoning sporty models. AutoWeek claims that the Bavarians are working on a higher-output version of the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with power closer to 300 horsepower, about a 72-hp boost. It's also rumored to offer a sporty version of the X1 that may be called the X2.
