1986 Jeep CJ7, 292 I-6, 5-speed, 44k-miles, original

1JCCF87E3GT0291071986

This is a rust-free, honest, and very original Jeep CJ7.  I bought this in November 2009 from a seller in Arizona.  I am the third owner – the first owner had it from 1986 to 2009 in Belmont, California, and the second owner had it from June 2009 to November 2009 in Tucson, Arizona.  I have some service records from the original owner and the second owner to prove the low mileage.

It’s a base model CJ7, but it’s got a lot of options:

·        Original factory AMC radio (still works)

·        Original factory AC (still works!)

·        Power steering

·        Power brakes

·        Tilt steering wheel

·        Factory 20 gallon optional fuel tank

·        Original paint

·        Original interior

I bought it as a neighborhood runaround toy – it’s never left the city in my possession.  I’ve never off-roaded it; it’s never been mudding.  Since I bought it, I have replaced all the fluids, installed new shocks, replaced the plastic valve cover with the metal version (still have the plastic one), just bought new BFGs, and installed the full-length bikini top.

In the three years I’ve owned it, it’s been amazingly reliable.  It always starts; it idles well, it doesn’t leak, the AC works, it drives/stops straight, and the steering is as tight as CJ can be.  I’ve never had to do anything to it because it’s never needed a thing.  I own a few old classics, and this one has been the easiest thing I’ve ever owned.

The biggest issue with this Jeep is cosmetic – the original owner apparently “laid it over” at some point.  If you look through the pictures, you can see the damage to the front fender, near the windshield mount, the doorway, and on the body at the left rear.  The CJ was not repainted to repair the damage – you can still see it as I got it.

This CJ does not have doors or a hardtop (I never had either).

The title is clear and in my name.  I’m selling because I have a four-car garage and six cars.  Something has to go – besides, my boys are getting older and we just don’t use this CJ for weekends like we used to.  I am of the camp that if you don’t drive it, you ought to sell it.  It’s located in a hangar on the west side of Houston.

It's got a reasonable reserve and I won't sell outside of the auction - I'd rather let it ride.

Fiesta-sized Jeep coming in 2014

Wed, 03 Jul 2013

We've heard rumors before about a new, baby Jeep to slot below the new-for-2014 Cherokee (pictured) in the automaker's lineup. Now, Edmunds is reporting that the new crossover will arrive sometime in 2014, and will be about the same size as the Ford Fiesta. This currently unnamed vehicle will effectively replace both the Compass and Patriot in the Jeep lineup.
Speaking to Edmunds, Jeep CEO Mike Manley said that the new, small Jeep will be assembled in Italy and marketed globally beginning sometime next year. Manley did not provide many details on the new model, but did say that it will be 4.2-meters (165 inches) long. The Cherokee, by comparison, is 4.6-meters long (181 inches). Furthermore, Edmunds reports that while the new small Jeep will offer diesel power in other markets, there are no plans for an oil-burning version here in the US.
Many other automakers are exploring this smaller crossover segment here in the US. General Motors recently launched the Buick Encore, which is loosely based on the Chevrolet Sonic subcompact's platform. Ford has already launched its Fiesta-based EcoSport in other markets, and has reportedly been pondering the idea of offering it in the US, as well.

China orders Jeep to investigate Wrangler fire risk

Mon, 06 Jan 2014

It's been some time since we've heard anything about fires related to the Jeep Wrangler (foreign or domestic), but it sounds like the go-anywhere SUV could be in hot water once again in China. Bloomberg is reporting that the Chinese government is ordering Jeep to investigate the matter and, in the meantime, also recommending Wrangler owners to not drive their vehicles in "extreme conditions" due to a "relatively high risk" of catching on fire.
There is no indication as to how many vehicles or which model years are affected, but the previous fire problems in both the US and China - which led to investigations but no recalls - were traced back to automatic transmission fluid leaks. The article, however, does not say what the potential problem is this time around as Jeep has not released a comment on the matter. The official notice, in Chinese, can be found here.

Chrysler expecting up to 200,000 9-speed transmissions for 3 models this year

Tue, 22 Jan 2013

Striving for improved fuel economy, we already knew that Chrysler will begin using a nine-speed automatic transmission in some of its new products this year, but what we haven't known is that volume at which this gearbox will be used. According to Bloomberg, Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne has been quoted as saying that the automaker expects to sell close to 200,000 units equipped with this new transmission in 2013. Those gear-rich trannies will be spread out across three models, consisting of the redesigned Chrysler 200, the still-unnamed Jeep Liberty replacement and the Dodge Dart.
This transmission should play a pivotal role in making Chrysler vehicles more competitive in their respective segments. Just for comparison, one of the Dart's key competitors, the Toyota Corolla, still uses a four-speed automatic, and a previous report indicates that the next-generation 200 could get up to 38 miles per gallon on the highway, which is better than most non-hybrid midsize sedans on the market. Marchionne says that the new Jeep model is expected during the second quarter of this year, but there is no word as to when the new 200 or nine-speed Dart will debut, but clearly Dodge would like to have the transmission in its compact yesterday. As for that volume figure, it definitely doesn't seem out of reach since the Dart, Liberty and 200 combined for a total of more than 225,000 units in 2012.
How many more gears can we expect in future cars? Probably not many more, since the CEO of transmission-builder ZF, Stefan Sommer, previously stated that nine speeds was the "natural limit" for transmissions.
