Our Favorite Family Car for 10 Years!

Do You Know How to Replace a Head Gasket?  Great Buy if you Do!

This vehicle is for sale from the original owner and is in Kelly Blue Book's "Very Good" condition except for one thing - the engine has a head gasket leak into cylinder 3.  This causes pressure buildup in the cooling system and the car heats up quickly.  It can run for short distances with minor missing on the one cylinder, but the head gasket really needs to be replaced.

We have recently replaced the serpentine belt and pulley, both intake manifold gaskets and the radiator, so this final problem made us decide to buy a new van and sell our "favorite family car" of ten years.

Now for the good news.  There is no rust on this car at all.  There are no major dents or body damage - just minor scratches, some of which might even compound out (see detailed pictures with ruler on each).  The air conditioner blows strong and cold.  All electrical systems work.  All computer functions work. The engine compartment is clean.  The body and interior have minimal signs of wear.  The aluminum wheels are flawless.  All but one tire has more than 50% of the tread left.  The title is clean and the car will pass safety and smog inspetion.  We have ALL of the repair receipts including the original window sticker.

In short, if you can fix a head gasket or replace the engine (average cost of a less-than-100,000 engine is $1,000) you will have a fine looking and fine-running van.

We have removed the plates from the car and there is no longer insurance on it.  You may test drive this car for short distances.  Local pickup only.

Read This: Auto Extremist advocates for Corvette as brand with multiple models [w/poll]

Fri, 25 Jan 2013

The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette really grinds Peter De Lorenzo's gears. Or, more accurately, the self-anointed Auto Extremist has an issue with what he sees as mismanagement of the legendary sports car by General Motors executives. In a new editorial on his website, De Lorenzo argues it's time to split Corvette off from Chevrolet to create an all-new brand, complete with a model range with at least three new takes on the sports car. Capable of fully leveraging the successes of the Corvette Racing program and brandishing the full might of GM's technical prowess, the Corvette brand would theoretically give Porsche something to sweat over.
Sure, that sounds like a party, but given GM's troubled track record when it comes to launching (let alone managing) brands, we say that's slippery slope that could just as easily end with the whole Corvette franchise in the scrap bin. Either way, the notion is certainly an interesting one. Head over to Auto Extremist to take in the full editorial, and then let us know what you think in Comments. Should GM split off its most storied nameplate?

Watch NASCAR racer Jeff Gordon put one over on a used car dealer... sorta

Wed, 13 Mar 2013

Full Disclosure: in my younger days, I loved nothing more than tormenting passengers with my behind-the-wheel hijinks. Once, after a particularly artful handbrake turn on a two-lane at around 50 miles per hour, I left one backseat occupant crying in their own lap. This isn't necessarily something to be proud of, but it gives you a glimpse into why it is that I find this ad from Pepsi so damn disappointing. The premise is beautiful. Take NASCAR legend Jeff Gordon, give him a disguise and set him loose upon some unsuspecting used car dealer. Hilarity ensues.
Except that this Pepsi Max commercial is so obviously staged, it can't help but feel like some ham-fisted marketing fail. From the strategically placed aftermarket cupholder mounted mid-dash for the hidden camera to the fact that the supposed dealer Camaro is displayed as a 2009 model (Hint: Chevrolet didn't make any), this clip is about as organic as a Twinkie. Still, we would never turn down a chance to watch Gordon thrash on a rental-spec coupe - only problem is, he probably didn't even do the driving himself. Check it out below.

Callaway debuts its new C7 Stingray at National Corvette Museum

Fri, 02 May 2014

Callaway showed off its first tuned version of the 2014 Corvette Stingray at the National Corvette Museum last week, giving the rampant enthusiasts of America's sports car a look at the roughly 620-horsepower, supercharged rocket.
Unlike the Corvette SC610 we showed you back in January, this Stingray packs a fair bit more oomph. Horsepower is only up ten ponies, but torque has jumped from 556 pound-feet to "at least" 600 pound-feet. Neither horsepower nor torque is official quite yet, although Callaway is expecting to know just what its creation can do once testing and validation is completed later this month.
The 6.2-liter, supercharged V8 now boasts a new, three-element intercooler, which Callaway claims only allowed the inlet air temperature to increase by ten degrees Fahrenheit during dyno runs. Previous designs saw a 35-degree-Fahrenheit jump. The exhaust system has also been fettled with, and now is even less restrictive.
