VOLKSWAGEN "THE THING" MODEL 181 WAS BUILT IN Germany by VOLKSWAGEN year 1972 This car was used by the German Army as an Ambulance car and therefore used only in Emergency cases. I bought this car from the German Army and shipped it over to the US and started to get new paint, shocks, brakes, tires. It has a convertible soft top, which is new and it has also a roll over bar. In 2010 I put in a heavy duty BOSCH starter ( $ 480.00) In 2013 a brake job for $ 700. was done. Bills are available. It is powered by a 4-cylinder gas engine, with 4-speed manual transmission and on the rear axle it has a retracking device for terrain driving. I used this car only to pull it behind my motor home and while vacationing I used it for fun. The speedometer shows actual mileage 78320 km, approx. 30000 km were used to pull it behind my motor home. The car is in excellent condition and works properly, even the heater. Standard military equipment included a military lighting system, map light, rifle mounts, spade, starting handle, towing hook, straps on the inside rear deck for attaching a shovel, clip and latch for engine hand crank inside engine compartment (engine crank handle) If you are in the market for a unique and hard to find, rust free, extremely reliable vehicle, look no further. This THING starts on command and remains a pleasure to drive/shift on the open road or terrain. It was always garaged. Volkswagen Golf Variant Concept R-Line puts the sport in SportWagen
Wed, 06 Mar 2013With the introduction of the newest Volkswagen Golf Variant, we get an early look at what will most likely be the next-generation Jetta SportWagen here in the US. To further wet our appetities, VW is now teasing something a little sportier with the Concept R-Line. Looking the part of a GTI wagon (or a stretched Golf R), the Golf Variant Concept R-Line has a production-ready appearance that has us hoping we'll see this sporty wagon sooner rather than later.
The R-Line starts off with a new fascia that isn't quite as aggressive as the recently introduced GTI, but it gives the new styling some extra punch. Below the fascia is a lower splitter that visually carries back into the rocker panel extensions, and the rear of the car gets some bright exhaust tips and a rear diffuser. The Lapis Blue Metallic paint job probably does enough on its own to add a sporty flair to the Golf wagon, and it's all finished off with 18-inch split-spoke wheels. Inside, the Concept R-Line shows off sport seats wrapped in carbon leather featuring blue nappa inserts in the middle.
Rightfully so, VW brought the Concept R-Line to Geneva with its TDI and 4Motion all-wheel-drive system. A sporty, all-wheel-drive diesel wagon? Yes, please. Scroll down for the full press blast with all the details.
Silverado HD, Touareg V10 TDI face off in diesel tug-of-war
Sun, 30 Dec 2012A couple weeks ago, we watched a Chevrolet Silverado get dominated by a Dodge Ram Heavy Duty in a fullsize pickup tug-of-war, but in that truck's defense, Chevy's Vortec gas engine was no match for the torquey Cummins turbo diesel. For our next round of vehicular tug-of-war, a Duramax-powered Silverado HD takes on Volkswagen Touareg V10 TDI.
Now, on paper, putting the Duramax V8's 365 horsepower and 660 pound-feet of torque up against the V10's 310 hp and 553 lb-ft looks like an easy win for the Bowtie, but unfortunately, this battle has a similar result as the Dodge versus Chevy video, with the Silverado smoking its tires trying to move forward as it gets pulled backwards. Put another way: YouTube 2, Chevy Silverado 0.
It just goes to show, though, that big tires, bolt-on fender flares and goofy smoke stacks don't improve your towing abilities. Besides, what did the Silverado driver expect when the Touareg V10 TDI has towed a Boeing 747 in the past?
Tanner Foust checks out his new VW Beetle GRC rally car
Thu, 11 Sep 2014Racing driver and Top Gear USA host Tanner Foust is a very busy guy. After all, he's competing in rounds of both Global Rallycross series and FIA World Rallycross Championship, not to mention his TV duties. However, we probably shouldn't feel too sorry for him, because his job puts him behind the wheel of some truly crazy machinery.
Case in point is his latest ride in Global Rallycross - the Volkswagen Beetle GRC. The German company claims that this all-wheel drive Bug makes around 540 horsepower from its 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and can shoot to 60 in under 2 seconds. Plus, if this video is any indication, this Volkswagen sounds like a machine gun when throwing revs at idle, and it can do some wonderfully easy four-wheel drifts.
Previously, Foust was driving a VW Polo for Andretti Autosport in GRC, but the team unveiled the look of the Beetle GRC at the Chicago Auto Show. Now, Foust is finally getting to show off his new office to the public, and like VW's tagline for the new car claims, it's way hotter than Herbie.
