Description

So imagine seeing this old beat up 1949 ford f1 sitting there just begging to be put back on the road but it was too much of a Frankenstein to get anyone’s attention.  I looked at it and saw nothing but potential.  This is a great truck and it has been taken care of before it sat you can tell it has all the bells and whistles of the time and it was the top of the line model at the time.  This truck was a project of mine, pretty much I wasn’t going to let it get crushed or sit in another dreamers garage any longer it needed to be on the open road or bar hoping again.  So I dragged it onto the trailer literally and once I got it home I made it a driver again.  I would keep it but the city I live in you can only have 5 vehicles and I am way over beside I enjoy bringing old trucks and old triumph motorcycles back to life like others enjoy fishing or woodworking.  So I proved everyone wrong and put 100’s of hours worth of work into it and low and behold Frankenstein runs again and is ready to be driven.  The fact it has a chevy 283 in it just adds to the fact that this truck should be driven.  They are much cheaper and easier to maintain then the cast iron fords.

Ok here goes this truck came to me a couple months ago in very sad shape indeed.  It is indeed a 1949 ford body, frame and all suspension parts.  Then someone in the late sixties early seventies is my guess turned it into a hot rod by dropping in a 283 small block Chevy engine and auto tranny my guess is out of an impala cause the impala symbols are glued to the side of the truck.  They also ran ac power and an extra gas tank that is still in the bed of the truck.  The ac power and second gas tank are disconnected for safety reasons but could probably be hooked back up.  I left them in their cause the look is great and I can just tell that some guy owned this truck in the 70’s and loved it.  There were spark plugs in the old exhaust and the ac power just makes me think of an old movie with a guy revving his engine on the side of the road shooting flames and listening to a radio or something. However I guess it could have also been a work truck that did long trips due to the two gas tanks.  Either way it still has every option that was offered back then right down to the vacuum fan that is in the upper driver’s side corner of the windshield.  It even still works, and if you watch the video I show it working.

This truck has had a ton of work done to it. I am growing much attached to it so I am going to sell it now before I drive it around more and get even more attached.

Work I have done includes

New oil pump, bad relief valve on old one

New oil pump screen

New main seals on the engine, was leaking from sitting I am guessing

New points, cap, rotor, all that good stuff

New wheel cylinders, shoes, drums, springs, adjusters and so on in the back.  They were not even there

New exhaust manifold two down pipes and a couple cherry bombs

Brand new rubber on 20 inch dodge rims but center caps can be changed to say anything same bolt pattern

New 2 inch aluminum spacers on all four wheels so you can ride on modern tires and rims

All new studs and lugs on all four corners

Ok so you get the point almost every wear part on the truck has been replaced.

I am running an electric fuel pump so no need for choke fires right up every time.  I rewired all the important stuff to 12 volt so no more candle sticks for headlights and you now have brand new and working  brake lights, tail lights, turn signals, plate lights and thanks to new York and there inspection laws you also have new galvanized bumper that can be easily removed if you live in a more understanding state. This truck is unique it gets a ton of attention, I know the ford guy are going to give me grief for the FROD emblem I assure you I didn’t do it but it is very amusing. Frame of the truck has been modified and transmission crossbar as well but they did a great job with it. This truck is not a restoration project to put back to a Ford without a new frame.  However it has a 283 small block under the hood so if you want to dress it up all you have to do is get the old corvette head and such and you are on your way.  There is no key the ignition switch is hidden but right now it is not running a key at all.  Not sure what else to tell you.  It has relays for headlights passes inspection and it is a true rat rod but on a daily driver level.  This is not a speed demon I promise you that but it is also not original so I guess I would label it as a curser that sounds like a hot rod. Owe I also replace windshield and front seal. I have the rear seal but did not replace it yet cause of the rust above the window and if it was mine I would do something with that before I put the new seal on while the old window is out even if it was to just fill it with silicone. This truck also has an air vent on the hood that pops up by a lever under the dash i should have put that in the video it is really cool and it works. another very rare thing is this truck not only has heat but it still works as well

Ok so on to the bad I guess, it is a rat rod and it is old and sat for a long time so there will be no guaranty with this truck.  The started right up and oil pressure starts at 80 and as the truck warms up it drops right down to 60 psi however this engine sat a long time I would think it will need an addition plug change and wires soon but runs great right now.  The transmission shifts really well now that I replaced the vacuum line and filled her up with new tranny fluid, I would however flush it after about 100 miles or so because I am sure there will be particulate in it from sitting.  There is something dripping every once in a while but fluid levels don’t move enough to notice so didn’t look any further into it. I have personally only put about 20 miles on it since I finished it so I would not hop in and drive it cross country.  Once you buy it you can do what you like that’s just my personal opinion.

Both front cab corners have small holes which I covered with old plates but before covering them I checked out mounts they are in great shape so it would only need repaired it you wanted to go through the trouble. I put an L bracket in there on the driver’s side to reinforce the door on the hinge side so the door closes effortlessly now.  I am sure I am leaving out a lot of stuff and if you ask questions I will try and keep up with them. Owe and I also installed modern gauges so voltage, temperature, and oil pressure are easy to monitor they have lights for night driving and I did not mount them cause it will be personal preference as were to do so, speedo works but is a little off cause of the tire size, gas gauge does not since it was converted to 12 volt I didn’t even hook it up. It may work there is a switch in there for both main tank and the tank in the bed.

Happy bidding I guess and I know I probably will not get my money back out of this truck but it was a blast to build.  I did put a reserve on it cause if I don’t sell it I will sell one of my other rat trucks because this one is something special.

Ford sued over alleged 3.5-liter EcoBoost defects

Thu, 16 May 2013

Three Ford owners from Ohio have filed a lawsuit against the automaker over defects that they allege exist within the company's twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost engine. Automotive News reports that the lawsuit claims the engine "contained serious latent design, manufacturing, or assembly defects." Those defects, the suit claims, cause the vehicle to shake, misfire and lose power quickly.
Two of the plaintiffs, a married couple, own a 2010 Ford Taurus SHO, and allege they experienced a loss of power and stalling, while the third, an F-150 owner, claims he lost power while accelerating. In addition to the Taurus SHO and F-150, the 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost engine is also available in the Ford Flex, Explorer Sport and Lincoln MKT and MKS. Other three- and four-cylinder EcoBoost engines are not included in the suit. There have been no recalls associated with 3.5-liter V6 engine, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is currently not investigating the matter.
The plaintiffs, however, claim Ford has known about the problem, citing several technical service bulletins issued to dealers of the F-150 that suggest possible fixes. Ford had no comment for Automotive News, saying that it's yet to review the lawsuit, which was filed last Friday in Columbus, OH.

2014 Ford Fiesta 1.0L EcoBoost to hit 45 mpg for $16,445*

Mon, 28 Oct 2013

When Ford first announced its plan to put the 1.0-liter EcoBoost three-cylinder engine under the hood of the 2014 Fiesta, it promised hybrid-like fuel economy without a hybrid-like premium. We're still waiting for official specs on this engine, but thanks to the EPA's fueleconomy.gov website and Ford's retail site, we now know what customers can expect in terms of both fuel economy and price.
All along, Ford has said that it expects the 1.0-liter EcoBoost to get more than 40 miles per gallon on the highway, and now the EPA backs this up with official ratings of 32 mpg in the city and 45 mpg on the highway. These numbers are an increase of two mpg city and four mpg hwy compared to the current fuel-sipping Fiesta (the 1.6 SFE), and it also beats other three-cylinder cars for highway mileage like the 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage (44 mpg highway) and 2014 Smart Fortwo (38 mpg highway); the Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost is lower than both three-pot rivals, though, in city fuel economy with the Mitsubishi getting 37 mpg city and the Smart rated at 34 mpg city. This model handily beats high-volume small cars like the Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris and Chevy Spark in both city and highway numbers.
As for pricing, the 1.0-liter EcoBoost is offered on both the sedan and hatchback as a $995 option called the SE Manual EcoBoost package, which is aptly named since it's only offered on SE trim-level Fiestas equipped with a manual transmission. Along with the engine, the package also comes with 15-inch steel wheels, regenerative brakes and a decklid spoiler on the sedan. This means the four-door Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost will start at $16,445*, or $17,045* for the hatchback (*not including $795 for destination).

Car technology I'm thankful and unthankful for

Mon, Nov 27 2017

The past few years have seen a surge of tech features in new vehicles — everything from cloud-based content to semi-autonomous driving. While some of it makes the driving experience better, not all tech is useful or well thought out. Automakers who are adept at drivetrains, ride quality and in-cabin comforts often fail at infotainment interfaces and connectivity. From testing dozens of vehicles each year and in the spirit of gratitude, here are three car tech features I'm thankful — and a trio I could live without. Thanks Connected search: This seems like a no-brainer since everyone already has it on their smartphones, but not all automakers include it in the dashboard and as part of their nav systems. The best ones, such as Toyota Entune, leverage a driver's connected device to search for a range of services and don't charge a subscription or require a separate data plan for the car. I also like how systems like Chrysler Uconnect use Yelp or other apps to find everything from coffee to gas stations and allow searching via voice recognition. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto: It took two of the largest tech companies to get in-dash infotainment right. While they have their disadvantages (you're forced to use Apple Maps with CarPlay, for example), the two smartphone-integration platforms make it easier and safer to use their respective native apps for phoning, messaging, music and more behind the wheel by transferring a familiar UI to the dashboard — with no subscription required. Heated seats and steering wheels: I really appreciate these simple but pleasant features come wintertime. It's easy to get spoiled by bun-warmers on frosty mornings and using a heated steering wheel to warm the cold hands. I recently tested a 2018 Mercedes-Benz E400 Coupe that also had heated armrest that added to a cozy luxury experience. Bonus points for brands like Buick that allow setting seat heaters to turn on when the engine is remotely started. No thanks Automaker infotainment systems: Automakers have probably poured millions into creating their own infotainment systems, with the result largely being frustration on the part of most car owners. And Apple CarPlay and Android Auto coming along to make them obsolete. While some automaker systems, such as Toyota Entune and FCA's Uconnect, are easy and intuitive to use, it seems that high-end systems (I'm looking at you BMW iDrive and Mercedes-Benz COMAND) are the most difficult.
