VW adding particulate filters to gas engines
Wed, Aug 3 2016Volkswagen is working hard to overcome the PR disaster that is its diesel emissions scandal, and part of its efforts is focusing, weirdly, on petrol engines. Starting in June 2017, the embattled German automaker will add particulate filters to the gas-powered Volkswagen Tiguan and Audi A5. The change will eventually impact nearly every direct-injected gas engine the VW Group makes. Audi? Particulate filter. Seat? Particulate filter. Even Bentley is going to get the tech, all in a bid to reduce soot emissions by 90 percent. In fact, by 2022 VAG expects 7 million of its vehicles to boast the emissions-cleaning tech, which has long been a fixture on diesel engines. "Following increases in efficiency and lower CO2 output, we are now bringing about a sustained reduction in the emission levels of our modern petrol engines by fitting particulate filters as standard," Volkswagen Group research and design boss Dr. Ulrich Eichhorn said in a statement. "In the future, all models will be equipped with the latest and most efficient SCR catalytic converter technology." VW's initial rollout focuses on the 1.4-liter, turbocharged Tiguan and the 2.0-liter, turbocharged A5. Considering the popularity of the 2.0-liter across the VW range, we'd expect it's only a matter of time before VW expands its particulate filters tech to additional gas-powered vehicles. The 1994 Porsche 911 Speedster only looks weirder with age
Tue, Mar 1 2016The 1994 Porsche 911 Speedster is undoubtedly a rare car, and it's even rather quick by the standards of the era. However, the designers weren't at their best when they created the odd shape at this model's rear. MotorWeek remembers this classic Porsche's exciting performance and weird look in its latest Retro Review. The Speedster's design isn't all bad. The front end still looks fantastic thanks to the nose of the 964-generation 911 and a steeply raked windshield. We can even live with the body color wheels. However, things get much worse at the rear where the hard cover, which hides the roof, gives the convertible a hunchback. As MotorWeek shows, fitting the manual top is quite fiddly. Porsche might have been better off from a styling perspective by leaving the back smooth and completely ditching the complicated roof. You can't get a good look at the weird rear from the driver's seat, and MotorWeek says that the Speedster excels once you're behind the wheel. The handling and braking are reportedly especially good. Sport seats grip the driver closely, and even with 247 horsepower, the convertible gets to 60 miles per hour in 5.4 seconds. With the weather starting to warm up, it sounds like a great experience, and you can imagine taking a ride in MotorWeek's latest video. Related Video:
Porsche testing four-cylinder Boxster at the N?rburgring
Fri, 09 May 2014Porsche recently introduced a four-cylinder version of the new Macan for markets outside of North America, carrying Zuffenhausen's first four-pot since the 968 ended its production run the better part of two decades ago. But you can bet the compact crossover won't be the only Porsche to get the four banger before all's said and done. These spy shots, we're told, are evidence of just that.
Spotted undergoing testing at the Nürburgring (where else), this modified Boxster, our spy photographers tell us, sounds more like a four-cylinder engine than the flat six that's powered (in displacements ranging from 2.5 liters to 3.4) every version of the little roadster since its introduction in 1996, the year after the last four-cylinder Porsche ended production.
The test mule is also wearing modified wheel arches and aerodynamic aids under the bumpers, front and rear. Just what they're doing there we're not sure, but we'll probably find out sooner or later.
