Lexington Park, Maryland, United States
For sale: sexy blue 1973 280SE 4.5 with ivory interior. Automatic, loaded, NO RESERVE.
OK, up front: solid engine, new transmission, new brakes, new interior, perfect wood, replaced ... well, everything. I've replaced everything that's busted, broken or aged. Start grinning - it just gets better. Do you remember the girl in high school, with bumps in all the right places and curves in all the other right places? She was fresh, gorgeous and flashy in every way and you still think of her with a glint in your eye. And at the 40 year year reunion, you saw her again, and she was still curvy and bumpy and flashy, but had a few laugh lines and her hair was a little grey. THIS CAR IS HER! While not the young and fresh hottie she used to be, she's definitely still a cougar and is still knocking them dead. If you know Mercedes of these years, you'll know the old adage "There's nothing more expensive than a cheap Mercedes." How well I know, after more than $30k in replacement and restoration parts. With an older Benz like this, you have to worry about somewhat pricy parts, mechanics who may not know how to fix them, etc. I never short changed myself with maintaining this car as "good enough," and I can back up everything with receipts and a log I've kept since my original purchase. Since my original purchase, this car has stranded me twice - once from a dead alternator, and once from a dead starter. Both have been replaced and since, it's been solid, dependable. Awesome. I bought this car in 2005 with the intention of completely pulling it apart and restoring every weld, every bushing, every sensor, every piece of rubber and every seal. I have done this (except for the welds), and I have records to prove it. At the time, I had no skill at body work or painting, so I hired it out, and I frankly paid too much for the result. This is what I consider laugh lines - the clear coat is coming up in a few places, but the car still shines and I've kept up with the wax. Aside from a little surface rust (see the pics), the paint hasn't had a chance to oxidize. I have the ebay auction from the guy I bought it from in 2005. He felt he was the second owner, the first being a doctor in the St. Louis area. I bought it with an assumed 150,000 miles on the odo. The speedometer died a few years later, when I was stationed in San Diego, so I had it professionally rebuilt (I have the records to prove it). Prior to the rebuild, I put about 20,000 miles or so on the car, and the odometer now reads a little over 18,000 miles. A total of 200k miles on the car would be a fair assessment. So let's talk details (and BTW, when I say "I have records to support this," I mean that I have no-kidding receipts. When you take delivery of the car, I'll give you fully three inches of records of my own, and another full inch from the prior owner): Engine: tons of power, no knocks, no issues, no smoke, nothing. No smoke at deceleration, no smoke at startup, no smoke at idle. Smooth power in all gears and no issues whatsoever with how it runs. I replaced the fuel pump and filters soon after I bought the car (you'll thank me for buying the stupidly expensive $770 one from the dealership, I'm sure). The MAP sensor, thermo time sensor, coolant sensor, and a BUNCH of the other ones have been replaced. See below. Exhaust system: From the Y pipe, back, I've replaced it all, including the muffler. I also replaced the manifold bolts, and the exhaust manifold-to-engine seals. If you've ever replaced almost-rusted manifold bolts with a dental drill and teeny channel locks, you'll thank me for doing this a couple years ago. I have records to support this, and you're welcome in advance. There are no exhaust leaks and the car is quiet, dignified and ready for a good scream down the highway. Transmission: a bag of hammers when I bought the thing, so I had it totally rebuilt at Aamco. I have records to support this. I also replaced the shift linkage bushings. It stays in Park without issue and it shifts with the precision and superior engineering you'd expect from a car like this. Timing: I replaced the mechanical points with a Pertronix electronic spark system. I thought the car ran nicely when I bought it, but the difference was shockingly positive. It's nestled happily in a rebuilt distributor. I have records to support this. Cooling: I've replaced the radiator, but I can't find the receipt. I also replaced the oil and transmission coolers at the same time. Again, no receipts, but an inspection of the things will show their newness. Driveshaft: replaced about a year ago, due to seized universals. I think the original shipping sticker is still on the thing. I have records to support this. I replaced the center support bearing at the same time too, at the local Aamco. Rear end: nothing to report. No leaks or other issues. When I got it here, I had the oil replaced, but it was probably money not well spent. Steering: no issues. No noises, no leaks, no groaning, etc. Air conditioning: I replaced the whole system, including the compressor, soon after I bought the car. I have records to show this. I had the system charged with R12, which has since leaked or evaporated. You'll need to recharge it or convert the system for use with modern refrigerants. The conversion kit (seals, mostly) was $110 at Autozone when I checked last summer. Heating system: no issues. Again, if you know these cars, the heater blower motor replacement is a job you fear, loath or brag about. I brag about it, because it took my brother and I about 30 hours to replace the thing, and we only whacked back a twelve pack of beer in the process. I have records to prove this, but I don't have the records to show that I replaced the valves at the same time. Seals: all doors, front/rear wind screen and trunk seals replaced in 2005 and still in fantastic condition. Rust: ALL (and I mean ALL) structural rust was cut out and replaced with the same kind of metal. I've got a ton of pics from the restoration and can show where I replaced bits. I cut, shaped and welded in the new stuff, treated it all with POR 15 rust inhibitor, and had the body shop finish the rest. Engine bay: rather clean, if you ask me. I've got a '72 Fiat that held together only because of the vast quantities of oil coating the entire underside. This Mercedes isn't like this - aside from the normal drip or spill here or there, the engine bay is pretty clean. It's also the only thing I didn't try to restore - I just lost close hold of my free time as I started to deploy, do workups, weapons quals, and such. Trunk: no rust. None. There was some I repaired in 2005, but it hasn't returned. The pics in this auction show the thing after I coated the interior with truck bed coating, but I have other pics, well prior to it, that show the complete lack of rust. Fuel system: the tank was boiled out and recoated, with a replacement fuel filter and sending unit. I've also replaced every one of the eight injectors and seals. Again, I have records to support this. Body: solid as a freakin' rock. There is surface rust on one of the rear fenders, the trunk and a little on the hood. The pictures will show this clearly. Chrome: a few minor flaws here or there, but no rust, bends, or pitting. The pics speak for themselves. The grill has a rock divit/ding/indentation, but it's still almost perfect. Same goes for the lights and their chrome surrounds. Interior: pristine. Simply pristine. Well, just about - the head liner in the rear is falling out of the window seal, but I can fix that easily. I'd rather you see it up front and be honest. It's minor, but I hate hiding things. I'll fix it before you take delivery. I replaced the crappy carpet set with one from World Upholstery (dot com), including custom front and rear mats. See pics. Prior to putting it all back in, I installed some serious sound deadening material. Even at high speeds, the car is quiet. I received the car without a radio, so I installed a modern Alpine one. I don't have the hookups for it, but the thing is capable of commanding an iPod, and can take an aux-in input from an Android. I've got it hooked up to two round speakers up front, and two larger oval ones in back. If I kept the car, I'd probably install an amp and maybe a set of tweeters. But that's because I'm vain and like hearing pins drop while I drive. The wood is in excellent condition also, and again, the pics speak for themselves. The sun visors were replaced with video monitors, should you wish to watch a video on the way to something important and interesting. Brakes: dead solid, with the rotors (front and back) replaced when I bought the thing. The pads have tons of life left on them. I have a set of new tires with about 3000 miles on them. Again, see the pics. The bads: the engine bay wasn't restored or painted, but is in good shape. After a long haul, the car doesn't start happily (the so-called "Mercedes hot start" issue), but does start. Surface rust (as discussed above), clear coating coming up (see above) and the headliner falling in one specific area (see above). I'm missing the front-to-back gutter chrome on the passenger side. I think I have a replacement in the store of goodies I've accumulated over the years, but I can't guarantee that. I can go on and on, talk about "the time that..." (which usually ends with my hefty credit card bill and something else being replaced), or tell you how much blood, sweat and joy I've put into this car, but I'd rather just list the things I've replaced. Again, I have receipts for all of this: Heater blower motor Transmission Rebuild Snapon Windlace/Trim Spark plug wires Windshield Seal Mercedes Maintenance Manual Dome light Facia wood Front disk rotors Rear disk rotors Wheel bearing kit (front) Fuel filter Air cleaner mount Fuel pump Tie Rod Ends Electronic Ignition Vacuum Advance Air temp sensor Thermo time switch Water temp sensor Vacuum advance unit Dash Resonator Cold Start Valve Left Rocker Panel Right Rocker Panel Complete Dash Wood Set In-visor Monitors Infinity Speakers + tweeters Exhaust System Replacement Key Fuel Pump Mounts Water Temp Sensor Replacement Power Antenna replace right & left exhaust seals Oil temp switch fuel injection hose, clamps rubber brake hoses Fog lights fuel injection hose, clamps radiator fan switch replacement carpet set paint job, brake hose replacement, complete rear brake replacement Door weatherstrips Trunk seal Rear Windshield seal Infinity 5.25" round speakers Chrome muffler tip Window channel, oil pan screw Extra hub caps exhaust system Replacement battery spark plug wires power steering line, replacement brake lines replace aux fan relay Replacement windshield and seal Replacement exhaust - 2 pipe system Replacement AC compressor and rcvr/drier Replace distributor and coil hood pad, air filter Replace tranny shifter bushings Speedometer rebuild/overhaul Fuel Filter Fuel injection seals, fuel pressure dampeners, pertronix set Center support bearing, driveline bushing kit, AC drain line hose replaced AC charged, exhaust manifold bolts replaced, replaced distributor counterweights, replaced two motor mounts, replaced transmission mount, replaced steering shock absorber, replaced all eight injectors (OUCH!), set timing. replaced thermo time switch, replaced alternator, replaced cold start relay, replaced eight spark plugs, replaced MAP sensor, replaced both temp sensors replaced computer, replaced hood release cable Replace Right Front Window Regulator Boil out and recoat fuel tank Replaced fuel sending unit Replacement water pump, thermostat and belts Replacement Speedo Cable Replaced all 4 tires Replacement drive shaft Replaced seat belts Replacement Right Front Wheel Bearing rear Replaced left front wheel bearing rear Replaced the starter I have more than $30k in receipts and repairs on this car, and it would be unrealistic to think that I would ever recoup my costs. What you are getting is an almost-new (mechanically) car. It'll need a clear coat redo probably at some point, but you will be pleased with what you bought. Since buying this car, I've gone from the Denver area to Monterey CA, from Monterey to Newport RI, from Newport to San Diego, from San Diego to northern Wyoming, and from there to where I am now, as well as all over hell and creation while stationed in the various places I've been stationed at. This is not a "barely driven," "Sunday-only driven," "grandma goes to the library" or "low low low miles only" kind of car. It's gone from one side of the US to the other without complaint, it goes into and out of Washington DC on a regular basis, and is driven with the respect, love and adoration that a semi-hot footed Navy retiree like me drives it. In other words, this car is driven, loved and taken well care of, and is rock solid dependable. It's not a museum piece, but attractive members of your favored gender will look at you with envy and want to sleep with you when they see you in it. The auction winner also gets extra door glass, extra chrome, a spare distributor (also with a pertronix unit), a spare water pump and other associated nits and noids I've been collecting over the years. My number is 831-601-2313. Feel free to call with any questions. If you want close-up pics, let me know. The car comes with a clear Maryland title. You come to my house, you give me cash, I give you a packet of info and the signed title. $500 due upon close of auction. If you're active duty Navy and have an ID card to prove it, I'll give you a discount. Seriously. We sailors have to stick together. I have more pics available. eBay won't allow it, but the link is s24.photobucket (dot com)/user/ensgrube/library/ It includes a couple short movies of the engine starting and a full 360 degree view of the car. You are no-kidding getting a great car, whether as a platform for a reasonable investment, or because you know what a good buy this is. Now that you're dazzled and asking the spouse why you SHOULDN'T be allowed to buy the car, you'll be asking yourself why on earth I'm selling it. You should ask, but beware - if you're a "purist," you'll puke. If not a purist, I can't be held responsible for your injury from ear-to-ear grins and such. It involves three other 108 Mercedes I am about to inherit :) This is a NO RESERVE auction. I've listed this car locally though, and I reserve the right to close the auction early. |

Mercedes to market Tesla-powered 2014 B-Class EV in U.S.
Thu, 05 Jul 2012Looks like another Tesla Motors investor will be looking to cash in on their connection. Autoweek reports Mercedes-Benz will offer their B-Class in the U.S. with Tesla propulsion.
The magazine says their source at the German automaker confirms plans for a B-Class electric-only vehicle. While Tesla already provides battery packs for the battery-powered Smart ForTwo, the B-Class EV will reportedly have Tesla batteries, motor and other components. U.S. residents should be able to procure one sometime in 2014.
The same Mercedes source says plans for a hybrid B-Class have been postponed for now. Adding a range-extending, gasoline-powered engine to an electric vehicle would put the car into a different class for which rebates and incentives aren't as favorable in the States.
Maybach could become Mercedes-Benz sub-brand
Wed, 22 Jun 2011When you're arriving in a twin-turbocharged, twelve-cylinder Maybach limo, there's no reason you should ever have to be late. Except, maybe, to make a fashionable entrance. But up at the corporate level, the entire Maybach brand is being slowed down as critical decisions about its future are being undertaken.
Last week, we reported that a decision on what path Maybach would take going forward would be due at the start of next month, but the latest reports indicate that the timeframe has been extended as further options are being considered.
The previous options under consideration were twofold: either relaunch the brand with production outsourced to Aston Martin - which suddenly finds itself with excess production capacity - or shut it down completely. And those are still two very real options. Word has it that Aston has put together four concept cars for the Daimler brass to consider, all based on the next-generation S-Class platform (and thankfully not the old one).
Mercedes rules out hybrid supercar, promises SLS successor
Sat, 16 Mar 2013The recent Geneva Motor Show was a festival of hypercars, with the presence of not one, but three over-the-top debuts: the Lamborghini Veneno, McLaren P1 and Ferrari LeFerrari. The latter two have hitched their carbon fiber bumpers to the electrification bandwagon by using hybrid-electric powertrains not entirely unlike the propulsion systems we've come to know in cars like the Toyota Prius and Chevrolet Volt. Does that mean the flow of electrons up the four-wheeled food chain will eventually consume our hallowed supercars? Not if AMG has anything to say about it.
AMG Director of Vehicle Development Tobias Moers recently confirmed that not only will there be a successor to the Mercedes-Benz performance division's SLS AMG, he notes that its internal combustion engine will most definitely not be sharing living quarters with an electric drivetrain. Instead, AMG plans to focus on further pushing the power and efficiency envelope of the internal combustion engine and advancing the use of lightweight materials to achieve their goals. The first example of this effort can be seen in the new SLS AMG Black Series that incorporates many weight-saving techniques to shed some 154 pounds from the SLS AMG GT (above), which itself is lighter than the standard SLS AMG.
Furthermore, Moers remarks that his company is happy to leave the hypercar segment to companies like Ferrari and McLaren. He admits that, "Ferrari in the hyper-car segment is still a different brand than AMG. We have to be honest..." So rather than taking the SLS further upmarket to do battle with bulls and stallions, Moers hinted that the next-generation SLS may be joined by another performance model that fits neatly between itself and the C63 AMG.
