I've had this Mercedes for approximately twenty years. During that period of time I have driven it with confidence - at one time I would have taken a trip to Canada with little fear of any problem. Although the vehicle has been seldom driven in the several five years, I have cranked and run it each and every month. Here are more particulars:

1. I wrecked the vehicle several years ago, after which the hood, front fenders, front bumper, etc., were repaired or replaced. The motor was not damaged. At that time I had the entire vehicle repainted its original color, a light cream. The paint job now is in very good condition, with only a few pecks. The car is stunningly beautiful when it is clean.

2. This past week I replaced the battery ($135), drove the car from its storage area some twenty-five miles away, and filled the tank with fresh non-ethanol gasoline. It drove fine except that the brakes do have an apparent problem (described herein).

3. The motor and drive train are in very good condition. The motor cranks and runs smoothly, the transmission shifts flawlessly. It does not smoke and did not use any oil when I was driving it years ago.

4. The two "major" defects are the brakes and (possibly) the fuel pump. Last week when I was driving around Vicksburg the brakes gradually went. When I got home I had just enough pedal to stop. The master cylinder is full, and I see no evidence of leakage at the wheel cylinders. So... I have no idea what the brake problem may be. Additionally, when I tried to start the engine this morning the engine turned fine, but would not start. I could not hear the fuel pump "whine" when I placed the ignition switch in the "on" position, so I suspect either the wiring to the pump has failed, or the pump motor has failed. But, it may be something else entirely.

5. Other known defects include: a) Since the car has been driven very little lately, the tires look like new, but they are old and may need replacing before running at highway speeds, 2) The odometer works sometimes, sometimes not. It's showing about 126,000 miles, but may have an additional 5,000 miles maximum, since I have driven it very little in the past several years. 3) The radio antenna extends automatically but sometimes hangs up, 4) The radio is a replacement. I may have the original someplace and will attempt to locate it if the buyer wants it, 5) The driver-side leather seat has some small holes and a seam failure - see photo, 6) A small disc on the speedometer needle has fallen off - see photo, 7) The  passenger-side door sometimes requires opening from the inside - perhaps a lock problem, 8) The air conditioner worked when I stored the car, but is not working now. I believe it will work if charged with freon, 9) The fuel gage works intermittently, 10) There are probably more minor defects, but I can't think of any right now.

In summary, this is a beautiful car with a beautiful body and a very good engine and transmission. With some TLC it can serve a new owner with pride and distinction for years to come.

2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class interior caught in spy shots

Tue, 29 Jan 2013

With the redesigned 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class getting closer to production, the camera-wielding crew over at Autospies somehow managed to get inside of the car to snap some detailed spy shots. As the prototypes continue to shed camouflage, it would appear that Mercedes-Benz is getting closer to unveiling the car, and with the Geneva and New York auto shows coming up, it could be sooner rather than later.
From what we can see of this car's interior, the overall look of the S-Class' cabin isn't a ground-breaking departure from the current car, but it has been completely redesigned with more advanced technology. The styling is now even more upscale with larger swaths of wood, more shapely door panels (without the built-in armrest cubbies) and the concept-like two-spoke steering wheel. The highlight of this car though is probably the two massive digital screens with one being used for driver information and the other used for navigation, audio and infotainment systems. One other detail we noticed about this car is that it was equipped with the new 360-degree camera that debuted on the new GL-Class and will also be used on the 2014 E-Class. We also know that the next-gen S-Class will be getting the new cloud-based MBrace2 infotainment system.
As for the exterior design, it looks like the next S-Class will carry a similar profile as the current car, but we can see through the camouflage that the new styling will fit in better with current Mercedes-Benz products. Up front, the grille is much larger is flanked by aggressive LED-trimmed headlights, while the rear view of the car shows us the LED brake light now at the top of the rear window, a more pointed trunk opening and a more squared-off rear fascia with exhaust outlets pushed to the corners.

Aston or Bust? Maybach's fate to be decided next month

2011 Maybach 62 - Click above for high-res image gallery
What will become of Maybach? That question has been rattling around the halls of Daimler headquarters in Stuttgart for some time now. But all questions will be answered, and answered soon: according to reports, the German automaker is currently evaluating prototypes and propositions for its top-end marque, and will make its decision next month.
So, what are the options? On the one hand, Daimler could kill the Maybach brand altogether. It was a notion ill conceived and even more poorly executed, taking an old platform and building a new flagship atop it. In that way, it was sort of like the Chrysler Crossfire, only far more costly to both the buyer and manufacturer. On the other hand, Daimler could opt for the long-time-coming proposition of contracting the production (and possibly much of the development) of a new generation of Maybachs to Aston Martin.

Chicago Car2Go app reportedly hacked, some 100 cars missing

Wed, Apr 17 2019

Car2Go launched in Chicago in the summer of 2018, with 400 Daimler cars rolled out on the Windy City streets soon after. But that big fleet just took a big hit: The car-sharing app has now reportedly been hacked, and some 100 cars have been stolen as a result. CBS Chicago is reporting that some of the missing cars have been used to commit crimes. It is yet unclear what the hacking has exactly enabled the perps to do, but the compromised app appears to have opened the doors and given the thieves free rein with easily stolen cars. Within Chicago, there is a 29 square mile area where the vehicles were supposed to be dropped off, but they haven't been limited from exiting that zone at any point. The Chicago Car2Go fleet started out with Smart ForTwo cars and bigger Mercedes-Benz CLA/GLA models; we can imagine the ForTwos are a touch slight for any ram raiding, but an escape car that can vanish in a crowd of other shared Smart cars seems handy for misuse. To address the matter, Car2Go froze its Chicago operations today, saying it is "neutralizing a fraud issue and working together with law enforcement." No personal or confidential user info is said to have been compromised. CBS Chicago's Brad Edwards tweeted today that 12 people have been taken into custody so far, with the story developing as we speak.
