1995 Lincoln Town Car Cartier Edition, 168,680 miles, V8 engine runs strong.  Quiet and super smooth ride on new Michelin tires ($500 value).  Power everything.

This car was donated to a non-profit organization, so I'm afraid I don't know all the details of its history, but feel free to ask and I'll do my best.  It's registered through June 2013 in California - and I believe it's always been a California car (San Jose area so great weather, no salt).  I drove it about 90 miles to get it here to Davis, mostly on the freeway and found it extremely comfortable, quiet, powerful, and with a great sound system.

The air suspension makes a soft rumble for 30 seconds when you first start the engine, then silent and cushy after that - I assume that's normal.  The air pump/compressor was replaced at some point.  The body is very straight with just minor issues here and there if you look closely, with the largest scratches on the front bumper (see picture).  The paint needs polishing compound, is oxidized in places, especially on the roof.

Interior is in great shape overall, especially the dash and the back seat which appears to be unused.  Trunk is incredibly clean.

All the main electrical bells and whistles work making for a luxurious ride, windows, door locks, mirrors, interior lights, dash lights and controls, radio, cassette, 10 CD changer in trunk.

Known issues:

There is a roughly 0.3 amp drain on the battery so the owner installed a battery switch on it making it easy to disconnect if you're not going to drive it daily.  I'm no expert on these matters, but the other quirk which may be related is that the radio stays on when you turn off the ignition and pull the key out.  Since the ignition is not supposed to power the radio when the key's out, my guess is that it's also powering some other things in the same position which it shouldn't be doing - so maybe just a new ignition switch will take care of it?  The dash clock sometimes works, sometimes doesn't.

The seat heaters apparently aren't working.  Also the cruise control doesn't seem to come on, although I'm not certain that I'm turning it on correctly - just using the buttons on the steering wheel?

The climate control appears to work and can be controlled from the steering wheel, however, it's not clear if the A/C is blowing cold or not ... it's been to cold here to tell!  If the compressor isn't engaging, it may just need some freon to get it up to pressure and working again.

The overhead is drooping in places and the driver's visor has some tears in it - needs a new cover.

Ford to update Sync, MyFord Touch software... again

Wed, 07 Aug 2013

Ford hasn't had the best luck with its MyFord Touch and Sync systems, as the finicky infotainment system has been subject to a critical whooping while customer issues have helped sink Ford's IQS scores. The automaker has made a concerted effort, though, to try and fix MyFord Touch. And while the results have been mixed, The Blue Oval is hoping its latest free update, set to go live next week, will make things better.
According to a report from The Detroit News, the new system promises streamlined voice commands with fewer levels between opening query and actual result. Ford is also addressing where certain options are selected on the touchscreen. Rather than working one of the four quadrants on the homescreen, users will be able to select anywhere within the quadrant to make adjustments.
While it might only be a band-aid for MFT's problems, the fact that Ford is still trying to improve it is a promising sign. It's going to take more than just this update to address the system's ills, though.

Ford faces class-action lawsuit for selling vehicles without brake override systems

Fri, 29 Mar 2013

A total of 20 Ford customers are suing the automaker in a class-action lawsuit for selling vehicles "vulnerable to unintended acceleration." According to Reuters, the suit names 30 models built between 2002 and 2010 with electronic throttle control systems but without a brake override system. Those include the 2004-2012 F-Series pickups and the 2005-2009 Lincoln Town Car. Adam Levitt, a partner with the law firm of Grant & Eisenhofer says the plaintiffs in the case want "to be compensated for their economic losses by having overpaid for cars that contained defects." Levitt contends that the plaintiffs would not have bought their vehicles or paid less for them had they known there was no brake override system in place.
Ford began installing brake override systems in its vehicles beginning in 2010. In response to the lawsuit, Ford has pointed to research by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that indicated that unintended acceleration is mostly caused by driver error, saying in a statement that, "NHTSA's work is far more scientific and trustworthy than work done by personal injury lawyers and their paid experts."
Belville et al v. Ford Motor Co. will be heard in US District Court in the Southern District of West Virginia.

Why the 2015 Lincoln MKC is 'holding some powder'

Thu, 19 Jun 2014

Earlier this month in our first drive of the 2015 MKC, we told you that Lincoln finally had a new vehicle in its arsenal worth crowing about. So with the compact premium crossover now finding its way into dealers, why aren't you seeing its likeness plastered on billboards and barraging you on television? It's because Lincoln is "holding some powder."
Those are the words of Lincoln's global director, Matt VanDyke, who tells Autoblog that the company is holstering some of its marketing guns because it's keen to avoid repeating the ill-timed efforts that blighted its last rollout, the MKZ. That vehicle's launch early last year was beset by various delays related to manufacturing and quality. The cadence issue was so dire that by the time the model reached showrooms in volume, Lincoln had already blown most of its budget on things like Super Bowl ads that ran weeks or even months before customers could check one out in person. It was a particularly trying series of events for parent Ford because the MKZ and its oversized marketing spend were charged with relaunching the Lincoln brand to the public.
Keen to avoid repeating the same timing issue and mindful of consumers' habits at this time of year, Lincoln is taking a different strategy with the MKC. According to VanDyke, "What we don't want to do is try and fight the summertime - people using television being down, and other mass media when school's out. New television shows aren't on." Of course, that doesn't mean Lincoln is sitting idle. VanDyke says, "By no means are we quiet during the next 90 days. This year, we're going to really spend the next 60 to 90 days using digital and social media, in-theater advertising and the like, and once we have full availability at dealerships, we'll really ramp up the advertising later on in the summer." Part of that early media effort includes immersive digital marketing like Lincoln's clever Dream Rides web experience.
