Model Overview
The Fusion comes with two different engines to suit different priorities. For economically minded buyers, the base 160-horsepower 4-cylinder engine provides adequate performance with the five-speed automatic transmission but feels peppier with the no-extra-cost five-speed manual. This combination rates at an economical 20 mpg city, 29 highway. Then there's also the 221-horsepower, 3.0-liter V-6, which provides more impressive performance and strong passing power; this engine is only offered with a responsive six-speed automatic. Three different models of the Fusion are offered: the base SE, the mid-range SE, and loaded SEL. The S is only offered with the 4-cylinder, while the SE and SEL can be had with either engine. A road-oriented all-wheel-drive system is available on the SE and SEL, giving the Fusion more traction to take on slippery winter roads. With its prominent, brightly chromed grille, wide stance, and rather imposing, upright appearance, the Fusion stands out in design from the rest of the mid-size sedan crowd. It also drives with a little more verve on the road, even if it isn't quite as smooth and quiet inside as some of its rivals. The four-wheel independent suspension and precise rack-and-pinion steering make it especially enjoyable to drive on twisty roads. The Fusion seats five, and the split-folding back seat allows the already-spacious trunk to be expanded for larger items, and on SE and SEL models the front passenger seat also folds down. In base S form, the Fusion costs less than many cars a size smaller but is actually equipped quite well with air conditioning, cruise control, keyless entry and a sound system with MP3 compatibility and input jack. SE models add alloy wheels, fog lamps, a power driver's seat, a trip computer, and an upgraded audio system with six speakers, a CD changer, satellite radio, and steering-wheel audio controls. The SEL at the top of the range features 17-inch alloy wheels, a quad-tipped exhaust, heated mirrors, door-pad keyless entry, automatic climate control, an overhead console, ambient lighting and Sync, a voice-activated calling and audio interface that allows innovative features such as the automatic reading of text messages. Anti-lock brakes, front side airbags, and side-curtain airbags are standard across the Fusion model line, but electronic stability control is now optional through the entire model line. A DVD-based touch-screen navigation system is available at the top of the line, as is a premium Audiophile sound system, but there are also several packages that spice up the Fusion's appearance. A Sport Appearance Package adds a sport-tuned suspension, 18-inch machined wheels, a darkened grille, and other appearance revisions to match. Most noteworthy this year is the new Blue Suede Package, which adds the sport suspension and 18-inch wheels, suede-like blue Alcantara inserts inside, and a charcoal black interior with black stitching.

Ford to add Android Auto and CarPlay to 2016 SYNC 3 cars via update

Fri, May 19 2017

Ford is updating a large number of 2016 model year cars equipped with SYNC 3 infotainment software, adding Android Auto and CarPlay to the vehicles with a free, over-the-air update via Wi-Fi, or using either USB or going through their dealer. The upgrade will be available for around 800,000 vehicles in total, giving a huge number of Ford car owners the chance to get big infotainment improvements without having to buy a newer model car. The OTA update option is also a big step for Ford – it's the company's first for software ever, and it's one of the major reasons that Ford recently hired around 400 new mobile smartphone engineers, the company tells me. For CarPlay, users will still also need to upgrade their vehicle's USB hub to make this work (which will also incur a dealer visit and a cost), but for those on Android, all that's required is a simple software installation. The USB install method is also faster, but the Wi-Fi update option is the start of the company's efforts to really increase its OTA update program, which will be used for security improvements as well as infotainment bumps. Even with a dealer visit and hardware upgrade for CarPlay, this sounds like a worthwhile thing for 2016 vehicle owners to do. CarPlay and Android Auto are huge upgrades vs. most in-car software, offering navigation and entertainment options that follow you from your phone to your car. Retroactively offering this kind of thing to car owners is a definite change in tone for carmakers, since they typically use these kinds of things as incentives to get people interested in vehicle model updates. But as data becomes increasingly important to automakers as a business, it makes sense to encourage greater in-car use of devices.Written by Darrell Etherington for TechCrunchRelated Video: Auto News Ford Lincoln Technology Infotainment android

Detroit Three autoworkers could get huge bonuses

Mon, 06 Jan 2014

For a long time, being a line worker for one of the Detroit Three has meant living with an uncertain future. With the health of American automakers on the rise, though, things are also starting to look up for the men and women building the cars. The latest sign that things aren't bad? Big profit-sharing checks.
According to The Detroit News, Ford, General Motors and Chrysler could end up paying over $800 million to 130,000 workers as part of a profit-sharing plan. According to The News, the economic impact of these profits in Michigan alone could exceed $400 million, besting the NFL's Super Bowl, MLB's All-Star Game and the NHL's Winter Classic for their economic impact.
This is the third straight year the Detroit Three have issued profit-sharing checks to UAW employees, and for many workers, the checks are as close as they'll get to a raise, due to the most recent contract between the union and the manufacturers. On average, employees at GM and Ford receive $1 for every $1 million in North American (not just the US) pre-tax profits. Chrysler, meanwhile, gets a similar deal, although the Auburn Hills-based company calculates profit sharing using 85 percent of the brand's global profits.

Crowdsource funding push on to save historic Ford buildings

Thu, 22 Aug 2013

Detroit has no shortage of old, abandoned buildings, both within the city and in the surrounding communities. Few, though, have the historical significance of the old Ford Highland Park facility. Home to the very first moving assembly line, Highland Park was designed by the legendary Albert Kahn, and was one of the homes of the Model T.
Now, the Woodward Avenue Action Association is attempting to buy both the 40,000-square-foot admin building, which is located off the historic Woodward Avenue, and an 8,000-square-foot garage. The WAAA's goal is to convert the buildings into an automotive heritage center. The Detroit News spoke to the interim director of the WAAA, Deborah Schutt, who commented, "[Metro Detroit has] not been very good at telling our own story. So we've decided, let's pull everything together and tell our story."
The WAAA made an offer of $550,000 to buy the two buildings, and has $400,000 from the Michigan Department of Transportation and another $15,000 from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. It's trying to raise a further $125,000 through crowd-sourcing, starting a campaign called "Five Dollars A Day," after old Hank Ford's $5-per-day wage for line workers.
