Meet the Greenest and Meanest vehicles of 2016

If you've been keeping track, you won't be surprised with the number one entry in this year's list of greenest cars from the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE). In fact, the top three spots on the 2016 list are all the same as they were in 2015. After that, things get interesting. For one thing, this is the first Greenest list that doesn't have any purely internal combustion engine powertrain on it. Hybrids, yes, but if you want to be one of the top 12 greenest cars this year, you'd better have some sort of electric angle. ACEEE says that the conventional, gas-powered Smart Fortwo and Chevrolet Spark just missed the cut. In a statement, ACEEE lead vehicle analyst Shruti Vaidyanathan said, "The 2016 scores are in, and plug-in electric vehicles are outpacing all other vehicle offerings in terms of environmental friendliness." Like last year, one of the noticeable vehicles missing from the green list is the Tesla Model S. One reason? ACEEE takes curb weight into account (lighter is better), and the Model S is a heavy beast. The ACEEE doesn't just look at the clean side of the ledger. It also puts out a "meanest" list. These are the vehicles that pollute the most, not only from their tailpipes, but also any pollution created during the entire manufacturing process, from mining the raw materials to the energy used to produce the vehicle at the factory. 2019 Fiat 500X gets two-tone 120th Anniversary Edition

Fiat is 120 years old this year, so naturally it has created a special edition car to celebrate. Behold the 2019 Fiat 500X 120th Anniversary Edition in its two-tone glory. Every example will have the top half painted black to contrast nicely with three of the four available colors. It will be offered in a gloss white, a pearl white, a silver and in black. The last of those, of course, is the one of four that won't contrast with the roof. Besides the roof, the special 500X gets black mirror caps and black 18-inch wheels. There's also a smattering of 120th Anniversary badges around the exterior, plus standard LED headlights and fog lights. The interior has a black painted dashboard and a unique cloth upholstery with striped brown and black inserts in the seats. Unlike many special editions, the 500X 120th Anniversary Edition is relatively affordable with a base price of $27,230 including destination. That's just $995 more than the base Pop trim level. If you're interested, the special models will be on dealer lots by the end of the year.

Fiat retraces its roots with 1957 Edition 500

A car like the Fiat 500 is nothing if not retro, but the Italian automaker is making it all the more so with the 1957 Edition seen here.
Marking 57 years since the iconic Cinquecento launched in 1957, this new special-edition 500 upgrades on the model's Lounge trim level with such unique touches as throwback 16-inch wheels, vintage-style badges on the nose and tail, and an interior decked out in brown leather with ivory trim and gray door panels. It comes in either white, light green or the baby blue pictured here, the latter two colors distinguished by contrasting white mirrors and roof.
Power comes from Fiat's 1.4-liter MultiAir four-cylinder engine mated to either a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic, with a sport-tuned suspension and premium audio as standard. A limited quantity - Fiat has yet to say how many it'll build - will begin arriving at dealerships in the spring, with pricing to be announced closer to launch.
