Introduction:

For your consideration is this 1991 Ferrari 348 TS in premier cosmetic and mechanical condition having traveled only 24,500 original miles.  This example comes with extensive maintenance documentation/receipts.  It has a very clean and accident free history.  It was fully detailed throughout in May and has received recent maintenance.  It has traveled only 4,000 miles since its last “major” service.  This 348 is ready right now to be enjoyed by its next caretaker.  Please view the 10 minute video of this 348 running and driving, 120+ photographs, and detailed information below.

Video Clip:

A 10 minute long high definition video is provided to better show the condition of this 348.  Please copy and paste the link to view the clip.  There are a few different sections to the clip:

1.) Exterior walk around shows the excellent condition of the body and finish.  Notice the quality of the reflections.

2.) Interior clip shows the interior overall is very presentable.

3.) 100% cold start from the garage.  It had not been driven for at least a week.  Starts right up, nice and quick, the first time, every time.  Idles smooth without surging.  No warning lights on (other than the parking brake and driver/passenger warning lamps which of course go off when the brake is taken off and seatbelts are put on)

4.) Interior driving clip.  Shows it shifts great, rides smooth, no funny business.  And of course, beautiful sound!

5.)  Other driving clips show this 348 runs and drives excellently and is as fun to drive as good as it sounds!

Body:
The finish on this 348 is impressive.  ALL of it is the original, factory applied “Rosso Corsa”.  Per documentation and a professional opinion, not a single panel on this Ferrari has been re-sprayed.  Also per records, this 348 has survived 23 years accident free.  In May, the finish received a buff, polish, hand wax, and detailing.  This Ferrari has traveled 24.5k miles so there are a few very minor wear spots but hardly anything to note.  There are only minor in size and minor in quantity, to-be-expected stone chips spread out on the front of the car.  These spots have been professionally touched up with color matched paint and are very insignificant.  Significant scratches are absent.  Since the paint is the original factory applied finish, it is free of common re-paint issues like fish eyes, orange peel, cracking, large chips, drips, masking marks, overspray, and etc.  The deep red paint is as smooth as it should be and has quality reflections.  The video shows the reflections very well.  The quality of the finish matches over every body panel.  The paint looks proper for a Ferrari.  It is of the high quality that should be expected for a top notch 348 example with only 24.5k miles.  I would rate the paint a 9.5/10.

The rest of the body on this 348 is also in impressive condition.  It of course has been very well taken care of and shows.  There are no spots of oxidation to mention.  Door dings are non-existent.  One can kneel down looking down the side of the car and it is beautifully straight, smooth, and reflective.  Every panel looks great and proper.  Gaps are tight, straight, and proper.  The door jambs are even cleaner and shinier than the exterior of other cars.  The louvers are straight.  Doors, engine cover, and trunk lid all open and close properly.  New gas struts for the engine cover and trunk lid were installed so they stay up by themselves.  All of the glass is great with no significant defects to note.  All of the glass is the original Ferrari glass as shown in the pictures.  Front headlights properly raise and lower and are in nice condition.  Other lenses throughout are good.  Passenger front fog lamp did receive a stone impact and has some cracking as show in the pictures.  It has not gotten worse.  All of the wheels are excellent!  They are very very clean, non-stained/oxidized shiny clearcoat, and curb rash is absent.  A couple of the center caps are cracked.  Other emblems look good.  Weatherstripping and other trim looks great and proper.  The targa top is in great condition with only one noticeable scuff towards the center smaller than a dime and is very shallow.  The engine bay is very clean and extremely presentable.  The raw metal bits are bright and shiny and the black bits deep and dark.  Original plates, stampings, and stickers are present.  The front trunk is in great condition.  For those unfamiliar, it is fairly deep and good sized.  Ferrari tool kit is present as is the targa top cover.  The underbody on this 348 is extremely straight.  Floors look great with no damage from improper jacking noticed.  Suspension arms and other underbody bits are overall clean and lacking oxidation.  Rear subframe looks excellent.  All in all, a super clean, straight, and oxidation free body as to be expected for a 24.5k mile well taken care of Ferrari.  I would rate the body a 9.5/10.

Interior:
The interior on this 348 overall is very presentable and has just been detailed and conditioned.  The most notable wear to the interior is on the outside bolsters of the driver seat from getting in and out of the car.  This wear is of course very typical.  The pictures show it better than it can be explained.  It is not worn through or ripped but does show wear.  The passenger seat is in much better excellent condition, as would be expected.  There are a few other limited spots of scuffing/wear on the leather throughout.  The majority of the leather though is in very nice condition and is very presentable.  For example, the door panel leather look great as does the dash.  The steering wheel is excellent.  Gauges and gauge pod excellent.  This 348 does exhibit the very typical “sticky” black plastic as found in the center console, vents, and a few other spots in the interior.  It has been “polished”/cleaned with an interior conditioner and looks/feels respectable.  A corner of one of the vents is cracked and is pictured.  There are some scuffs to the driver interior door handle.  The headliner material is in nice condition but is a little loose.  Visors are good.  Behind the seats is all good.  Carpet is presentable and absent of significant stains.  Driver floor mat is original and has some wear.  Passenger floor mat is original and great.  No evidence of smoking.  Absolutely no cigarette burns.  Interior smells good, not funky.  Speedometer, tachometer, odometer, and all other gauges work well.    Wipers, turn signals, and headlight switches are all presentable and fully operable.  Window accelerator units were installed on both driver and passenger windows so those both go up and down excellently.  Gas door has an electric release which works every time.  10 disc changer and Sony stereo with Blaupunkt speakers installed discretely.  Traditional gated shifter looks excellent.  The digital climate control system is FULLY functional!  The A/C blows nice and cool which really helps make this 348 more enjoyable on super-hot days.  Cosmetically I would rate the interior an 8.5/10.  Overall, this 348 has a very presentable cabin that is comfortable and has properly functioning equipment.

Mechanical:
This 348 has been superbly maintained throughout its existence and drives like it.  Approximately 35+ receipts will go to the next owner and range in date as far back as 7/28/1993 and go to April 2014.  Window accelerator units were installed in May thus causing both driver and passenger windows to open and close properly and not embarrassingly slow (typical problem due to the poor grounding system Ferrari used).  New OEM gas struts were installed for the front trunk and rear engine cover so those now stay open on their own power.  $3,000 worth of service was completed in January, 500 miles ago. The service included new coils, new ignition wire set, new iridium spark plugs, new valve cover gaskets, new end plate gaskets, and fresh 5w50 synthetic oil change and Ferrari filter.  New, matching all around, and properly sized (215/50/17 front, 255/45/17 rear) sport tires were installed on 11/09/2012 2,000 miles go and are still in excellent condition.  $7,000 worth of service was completed on 10/25/2012 which included an alignment, new brake fluid, miscellaneous o-rings replaced, clutch release bearing, and new complete clutch assembly installed.  The “major” service was completed only 4,000 miles ago on 5/17/2008 which of course includes new timing belts, tensioners, gaskets, valve adjustment, etc.  Other receipts show regular oil and filter changes, miscellaneous gaskets replaced, different sensors replaced, A/C maintenance, vacuum hose replacement, switches, coolant, and etc.

This is the third Ferrari I have owned (’79 308 GTS carbed, ’83 308 GTS QV) and easily drives the sweetest out of all of them.  This vehicle has been superbly maintained.  It starts right up, right away, the first time, every time, and has that beautiful Ferrari growl.  It idles smoothly, without surging up or down, no matter whether the engine is cold or hot.  Please view the video showing a 100% cold start, not being started for a week.  The engine coolant and oil temperatures always stay where they should whether it is hot out or not, and whether the A/C is on or not.  The engine revs throughout the RPM range so sweetly without spitting, spattering, or hesitation.  When driving, it pulls as it should, offering the unique sound and powerband that only a Ferrari small displacement, high revving V8 can.  The intake and exhaust sound is intoxicating.  The exhaust is in great condition.  No exhaust leaks noticed.  No odd noises, shimmies, rattling, etc. coming from the engine or engine compartment.  Cooling system has received regular maintenance and looks great.  Brakes are excellent, absent of rotor warp and vibration.  Four piston calipers are up front and in the rear.  The clutch is of course excellent, with great pedal feel and engagement, no slippage, odd noises, vibrations, etc.  Older Italian exotics are known for their finicky transmissions and the transmission on this 348 is excellent!  Shifting should be done carefully for the first 5 or so minutes of driving while the transmission is warming up but it still shifts great during that period.  After being warmed up, it shifts with a preciseness and solidity that only a Ferrari can offer.  The synchros on this 348 are still great and shift without grinding and without issue.  The steering and suspension also feel great on this 348 with no issues noticed.  Steering is overall light but communicative and very precise.  The suspension is more compliant than most would expect but of course is sporty.  Tires are balanced and run smooth.  As stated earlier, other systems are functioning (lighting, air conditioning, etc.).  Suggested future maintenance would just be regular oil and other fluid changes.  The AutoCheck score on this 348 was slightly lower due to a couple more owners than average for an exotic car, even though it is 23 years old.  The AutoCheck verifies this 348’s clean, accident free, low mileage history.  I purchased a CarFax as well for this 348 and it is 100% clean, no accidents, and with verification of mileage (receipts verify mileage as well).

Conclusion:
The 348 feels like a proper Ferrari.  Originally these 348’s were about $110,000 in 1991 money.  In the exotic sports car world it is an amazing value right now.  308’s are around the same price, 328’s more than that, but both do not offer as great of a driving experience nor as great of performance or technology.  The braking of the 348 is significantly better with the four piston calipers all around.  Handling is not even comparable due to the mass being lower and better displaced with the longitudally mounted engine mounted far forward in the chassis and the 348 being wider overall with less overhang on the front and rear, not to mention 17” wheels with wider rubber.  The best part of the driving experience is of course the engine.  The 3.4L V8 pulls much stronger and wails much more pleasantly than comparable vehicles.  The 348 is such a beautiful machine that offers proportions that only an exotic can.  The low slung, wide stance is aggressive but slick.  As to be expected, there are detailed touches throughout that offer a high quality experience.  It is very comfortable to drive for extended periods with great ergonomics, comfortable seating, spacious interior, and functional climate control.  The 348 is a great exotic vehicle that gives you the Ferrari experience one would expect but is as useable and as comfortable as a 911.  It is a proper sports car without all of the electronic stability gizmos and without automatic transmission.  The 348 is known as one of the last, simpler, more “mechanical” Ferraris.  These cars are pretty bullet proof and very dependable when maintained.  Parts are of course more expensive but not as difficult to source as one might expect (ex:  TRutlands, Ricambi).  Insurance costs that I have experienced have been incredibly reasonable, probably due to being 20+ years old.   There is great community support for these vehicles like the FerrariChat and My348 websites for those that wish to perform some of their own maintenance.  There is of course a great Ferrari club in the USA, which I am part of, that holds regional and national events and has great member support.

This 348 is a top notch original example that has been very well taken care of.  It is extremely well sorted mechanically and is cosmetically impressive and original.  With the consideration of this 348’s excellent condition and verified history (receipts included) I have tried to set the price fairly at $38,700.  Serious buyers are welcome to contact me with any questions.  Preferred calls are between 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM central time.  Clean title in my name.

Why the Ferrari Testarossa deserves some respect

Wed, 13 Feb 2013

Join us for a moment in putting on our way-back hats, zeroing in on the late 1980s. Imagine that you're in your bedroom. Look over at the wall across from your bed. What car do you see on the poster? If you're anything like us, it's a Lamborghini Countach - in fact, it's a trio of Lamborghini Countach models in an array of colors. Oh, and there's also a 1:18-scale diecast Countach in black sitting on our dresser with its scissor doors locked in a skyward embrace.
Of course, the Raging Bull wasn't Italy's only great supercar from the 1980s, especially if you cast your lot at the temple of the Prancing Horse. The Ferrari Testarossa, as pointed out in the latest video from Petrolicious, is an oft unsung hero penned from the stuff boyhood dreams are made of. Far from a *ahem* red-headed stepchild, the Testarossa deserves a place in the minds and hearts of '80s supercar fans the world over.
Scroll down below to watch vintage car collector Joe Ventura talk about the Ferrari Testarossa with beautifully bright red Italian design serving as a fitting backdrop.

Ferrari patent suggests one-off SP FFX

Thu, 24 Oct 2013

You remember that batch of patent drawings we brought you a couple of weeks ago showing an unspecified Ferrari coupe? The interwebs were ablaze in speculation over what the car depicted could be, and we've been watching them all until we landed on the one that seems to make the most sense.
While some speculated that this could be a new California, updated to look more like the F12 and FF, our friends over at Jalopnik suggest, with sound reason, that what we're actually looking at is what we figured in the first place: that this is a one-off FF-based coupe being built for a private customer.
Perhaps the single biggest indicator doesn't lie in the drawings themselves, but the detail that everyone else seemed to have missed: at the same time as these drawings were submitted, Ferrari filed for another patent with the Italian government for the name SP FFX and the logo pictured above.

Ferrari teases more specs on its Enzo successor

Mon, 24 Dec 2012

On its web site, Ferrari has divulged a little more info about the supercar that will succeed the Ferrari Enzo. The Ferrari magazine reported that everything the Scuderia has learned in Formula One has gone into its soon-to-be-revealed animal, and this latest disclosure shows just how much that's true. We don't know its length or width, but Ferrari says one of the targets for the car was "a reduction in height and wheelbase to match that of the 458 Italia."
Rory Byrne, the Ferrari F1 designer that's been involved in 11 world championships for the team, has spent three years contributing to chassis development. That chassis will be laid up by hand in the company's F1 composites department, each chassis composed of different kinds of carbon fiber and cured in an autoclave, F1 monocoque-style. That's part of where the lighter weight and vastly heightened torsional and beam rigidity versus the Enzo comes from. Just behind the tub - and behind the driver's back - will be the batteries and fuel tank, again, just as on an F1 car.
The cockpit will be personalized to the driver in a way that is rare among road cars, with each seat made-to-measure for the driver and then set in a fixed position in the cabin. The steering wheel and pedal box will move to accommodate pilots. What's more, we're told that "the occupant's feet are at the same level as the driving position." That, and the angle of the seatback, will provide "an extraordinarily racy feeling."
