1971 Datsun 240z on 2040-cars
Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina, United States
This 240Z was originally purchased in VA and was brought to NC when the original owner retired. I have the original sales receipt (actually has 2 – one showing it as a 1972 and the correct one showing it as a 1971), window sticker, warranty card, radio manual, Manufacturers Statement of Origin, vehicle order form and owner’s manual. It was undercoated when it was new and not driven in the winter time so this Datsun is in superb shape. It still maintains its original driveline (engine, 4 speed transmission and rear end), and runs/drives well. It currently has Nissan wheels from a late 70’s 280Z. The original steel wheels and hubcaps come with the car. The car had one repaint in the original silver color. The seat bottom and seat back on the driver side as well as the seat bottom of the passenger side were replaced with original seat covers. I have the passenger seat back that comes with the car. The car does not have its original radio – the original owner had it replaced and put speakers in the door panels. Sadly the original radio was misplaced. Aside from that, the interior is original and is in great shape for the age of the car. There are 2 cracks on the dash that are shown in the picture. It also needs a rear hatch strut. Bumpers, exterior molding and emblems do show their age. They are presentable for a driver vehicle, but, could be replaced to make it nicer. If I were keeping the car I would replace the shifter boot, foot rest and rear carpet as it shows more age/wear than the rest of the interior parts. All gauges work except for the clock. Mechanically the car is in great shape. You can see from the pictures that the engine is stock, and extremely clean for a 42 year old vehicle with 110K miles. The car is currently located just south of Wilmington NC. I’m happy to email any additional pictures you’d like to see. Please email if you have any questions. |

Malaise Era All-Stars
Fri, 17 May 2013A few weeks ago, we bid a fond happy 40th anniversary to the automotive dark ages of 1973-84 that have come to be known as "The Malaise Era" - the performance ice-age when 160 horsepower was a lot and a 0-60 time of under 10 seconds was remarkable. Like music in the 1980s, everything in automobiledom didn't suck, however. There were a few bright spots. Here are five of our favorites:

Roadkill pits every project car against each other
Sat, 22 Feb 2014The guys behind Motor Trend's monthly Roadkill series have collected nine of their favorite project cars from their videos and pitted them against each other in a battle royale to determine a winner. It's 44 minutes long, but it's completely worth the investment of time.
The cars run the gamut from a 1973 Chevrolet Ramp Truck, a 1975 AMC Pacer and a legitimately impressive 1967 Chevy Camaro, and they are pitted against each other to see which is the fastest around an autocross course. The drivers include Roadkill's two hosts and Motor Trend's Johnny Lieberman and Carlos Lago. It's reminiscent of the best episodes of Top Gear and worth a watch.
So it's the weekend - the perfect time to relax. Grab your preferred beverage, get comfortable and enjoy 44 minutes of some seriously ratty but utterly cool project cars as they are throttled within an inch of their lives (or past it). Scroll down to check out the video.
Fiat contemplating sub-brand to compete with Dacia, Datsun
Tue, 05 Feb 2013You can add Fiat to the admittedly short list of automakers considering a low-cost brand to rival Dacia. The inexpensive Eastern European brand from Renault-Nissan has performed on the balance sheet like a premium model line, and the money the alliance is taking off the table is encouraging other players to deal themselves in. Pretty soon Nissan's Datsun sub-brand will join the Dacia party, going on sale in Russia, Indonesia and India and will claim even more rubles, rupiahs and rupees for the parent company. Volkswagen recently said it will make a decision this year on a budget line for the Chinese market. With the euthanasia of Lancia and plans to move the Fiat brand upmarket, company CEO Sergio Marchionne wonders aloud to Automotive News Europe whether there could be room for a new budget brand underneath Fiat.
We're told that the initiative has been in the idea box for five years and even moved to the stage of name considerations, like Innocenti, but worries about profit kept it from realization. If such a range were to be developed, Marchionne says it couldn't be built in Italy and stay within budget, and the company is "analyzing its manufacturing capacity outside of Europe to see if a low-cost brand is viable."
