Very nice 1961 Corvair Lakewood 700 wagon that I have taken as far as I can take on my budget. All the hard work is done, now it needs someone to do the detail and finishing work to make it perfect. I bought this car as a project out of Southern California two years ago, and have labored on it constantly since. Car was completely taken apart and refurbished. List of things accomplished includes:
. only rust on car was minor perforation on floor pans. All 4 replaced with new units and then coated underneath with bed liner material for anti-corrosion and sound deadening. I know they aren't as pretty as painted and polished pans, but unless the car is driving over you, I don't think you will notice!
. body bumped and painted in original Arbor Green and Seafoam Green factory two-tone. Very subtle two tone that is very pleasing to the eye.
. Drive line removed and freshened. All seals to prevent oil leakage on the motor were replaced, including push rod tube oil seals, rear crank seal, oil cooler seals etc.  Clutch, pressure plate and TO bearing are all new as well. Differential was completely professionally rebuilt with new seals, bearings and washers. Makes NO noise.
. Brake system had all rubber lines replaced, new shoes on rear axles, four new wheel cylinders and a new master cylinder. All steel lines showed no corrosion and were left alone.
. Fuel system includes a new gas tank, sending unit and two freshly, and professionally rebuilt carburetors. Starts up fine and idles nice. Goofy factory hand choke also has had all components replaced, but operation is dubious at best, just like in 1961!
. All rubber weather-strips were replaced with exception of the quarter window gaskets. Doors, trunk and hatch lids, vent windows etc. all have fresh new rubber, as does windshield and tailgate glass.
. All glass cleaned and polished. Car has original windshield, which has one small BB mark in it. Other than that, glass all good.
. Entire interior is new, with factory correct seat covers, headliner, padded dashboard, door panels and carpet. Looks like it left the factory yesterday.
. rear engine wiring harness replaced due to spagetti like appearance of original.
. heater system has new motor and all new fabric hoses. Cables were removed, cleaned and lubed and work fine.
. factory push button radio has had all tubes replaced. Works great most days, but has an off day once in awhile. New repro antenna also added.
. almost all factory exterior emblems replaced with NOS units, including grille bar, rear hatch emblem and Lakewood scripts. Also, NOS headlamp bezels, and three out of the four rear lamps also replaced with NOS units. All exterior plastic lenses are fresh GM NOS units. No Globrites! All exterior lights work as designed.
. four new 13 inch radial tires with less than 1000 miles on them
. All rubber suspension components replaced, including bushings for all 6 A-arms, rear crossmember suspension bushings, both front motor mounts. Each corner of the car also has a brand new coil spring and shock absorber. All four front tie rod ends also new, as well as all four ball joints and idler arm.
. Generator completely rebuilt using NOS Delco Armature, end plate, brushes and bearings.
. Speedometer recently rebuilt with odometer set to 00000. New speedo cable and trans speedo gear just installed.
. new exhaust including crossover pipe, muffler, hanger and strap.
Probably more that I'm not remembering right at this point, but like I said, worst is over.

As seen in the pictures, the car does not have its original engine. Best I can tell by looking at various numbers on engine components, engine is a 1963 102 hp unit. It has just recently been treated to six new spark plugs, new ignition wires and new points, cap and condenser.
For the purists out there, I have an original wagon/van long block motor that you can have with the car if you want to move it. It isn't complete, and I have no idea of the history, but it has the correct wagon oil fill location.

Car has a few things that will need some attention that I have run out of money and time to fix. Included on this list are:
. Door  lock mechanism on drivers door doesn't lock. Needs a new piece. Not expensive or hard to find. Call Corvair Ranch!
. Horn won't work consistently. New relay applied and column components cleaned up, but either sticks or doesn't work at all.
. Car should have a good four-wheel alignment. Tracks nice and straight, but I was basically measuring and duplicating old parts when I re-assembled, and I'm sure it could use some fine tuning.
. Its a Corvair, so you know if I told you it didn't leak some oil I would be a liar. Leakage, however, is very minimal.
. The window fuzzes on both front doors should be replaced. I bought new ones along with all the rest of the rubber on the car, but the supplier didn't seem to be able to get me front fuzzes that actually fit. Maybe you will have better luck!
. The 2 speed wiper motor works fine, but the washer doesn't. Don't know whats wrong with it. It wasn't a priority, since I don't drive in the rain!
. Some small bubble like defects in the paint in a couple of places. Most are concentrated on the wiper grille, for some reason. I have lots of left over paint to go with the car. Should not be a problem fixing, though they aren't real bad as is.
. When the car sits for an extended length of time without starting, one lifter in the motor clatters for a minute or so, then quiets down. Start it occasionally, no problem!

That's all that I can think of  for my confessional. As with all car purchases, I highly encourage any prospective buyer to come look, go for a ride and give the car a once over before bidding. If you are one of these lawyer-loving loonies that expects a lifetime warranty on a 53 year old car, look elsewhere. Car is sold as is, where is. If you don't look first, don't expect me to cover you if you find something you don't like after the fact. I've been as honest as possible here, and certainly don't want a disappointed or hostile buyer, but I can't guarantee that the car will run forever, or that you may find flaws that I didn't.

I have taken cars to various car shows around the country for over 40 years, and I am continually amazed at the attention this little car gets. I had a guy recently get mad at me at a show because everyone was ignoring his quarter million dollar street rod and looking at the little Corvair parked next to it. If you buy this car, prepare to be noticed. Vettes, Camaros Mustangs and Chevelles are a dime a dozen. These aren't.  This car was also voted Corvair of the month for October 2013 by the Corvair Forum website, and is featured on their 2014 calendar.

Will work with a shipper of your choice to make shipping as easy as possible on the buyer. Please don't call asking if you can jump in the car and drive it home to Oregon, California, Outer Mongolia or the house across the street. I have no real way of knowing if the car will give you any issues on a long drive. You can buy a brand new car and have it break down. You-know-what happens. I can't guarantee it won't!

GM 6.2L V8 claims most powerful light-duty truck engine title

Thu, 12 Sep 2013

General Motors has officially captured the horsepower crown for mainstream pickup trucks with its 6.2-liter V8. The big mill, available in both the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, comes to market with 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, handily outdoing its two cross-town competitors, Ram (5.7-liter V8, 395 ponies and 407 lb-ft) and Ford (6.2-liter V8, 411 hp and 434 lb-ft).
The new GM 6.2 will take a bit of an investment, though. Those that want the extra thrust will need to go with either the LTZ or High Country trims from the Chevy, or the SLT and Denali trims from GMC, which are the two highest trim levels for the respective vehicles. Trim levels aside, if you're in the business of towing, GM has you covered. Optioned with the 6.2-liter V8 and the Max Trailering Package, owners will be able to pull 12,000 pounds, a hugely impressive figure.
We still aren't certain as to what sort of economy the new engine will get, but it'll probably be a bad bet for the fuel conscious. As for availability, expect to see the 6.2-liter trucks in showrooms later in the fall.

GM sweetens military discount for Buick, Chevy and GMC

Sun, 06 Oct 2013

American servicemen and women interested in a new vehicle from Chevrolet, Buick or GMC now have a bit more incentive to head down to their local dealer, as General Motors has announced plans to improve its military discount program.
The new GM Military Discount Program offers eligible consumers a new Chevy, Buick or GMC at invoice pricing, which in some cases can take very large chunks out of a car's retail price. When factored in with other incentives, most of which are available with the Military Discount, the bargains are thick on the ground for members of the US armed forces.
GM's Retail Sales and Marketing Support general manager, Chuck Thomson, said, "GM has long supported the military and military families, and we hope this simplified and enhanced discount will show our appreciation for their service and help make it easier for them to own one of our great new vehicles." The program is open to all active duty and reserve members in the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, National Guard and Coast Guard, as well as veterans that have been out of the service for less than a year. Military retirees and their spouses are also eligible for the discount.

GM announces 3 new recalls affecting 1.7M vehicles in North America [w/video]

Mon, Mar 17 2014

Still embroiled in the ongoing ignition switch recall, General Motors announced today three more discrete recalls, affecting a grand total of 1,546,900 vehicles in the US. The Detroit News reports that some 1.7 million vehicles are affected overall in North America. The first and largest of the trio of new recalls concerns some 1.18-million Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia crossovers from the 2008-2013 model years, Chevrolet Traverse from 2009-2013 (pictured above) and Saturn Outlook vehicles from 2008-2010. All of the crossover utilities may have an issue with the wiring harness for their seat-mounted side airbags. Apparently, the vehicles are equipped with a Service Air Bag warning light that, if ignored, "will eventually result in the non-deployment of the side impact restraints." Those restraints include the side airbags, a front-center airbag if the vehicle is so equipped and seatbelt pretensioners. Dealers of affected vehicles will be instructed to remove driver and passenger side airbag wiring harness connectors, and then "splice and solder the wires together." The second recall affects 303,000 Chevrolet Express (pictured right) and GMC Savana vans from model years 2009-2014, and with gross vehicle weights under 10,000 pounds. Said vehicles do not comply with a head impact requirement for unrestrained occupants, and will need a reworking of the instrument panel material to be sent back on the road. It doesn't sound as though there's a quick fix for this one, as the GM press release states: "Unsold vehicles have been placed on a stop delivery until development of the solution has been completed and parts are available." Finally, the third recall affects 63,900 Cadillac XTS luxury sedans from model years 2013 and 2014. A brake booster pump may be susceptible to corrosion by way of the relay, potentially causing and electrical short, overheating, melting of plastic components and even engine fires. GM says it is aware of two engine fires in unsold XTS models and two cases of melted parts. Repairs for the issues affecting the XTS have not not mentioned by GM in the release. The Detroit News is also reporting that along with news of the triple-recall, GM is taking a $300-million credit to help pay for the repair costs, and to deal with the ongoing costs associated with the ignition switch recall. In an attempt to explain just what GM has been doing in the face of these very serious issues, newly minted CEO Mary Barra has addressed the issues in a new video.
