Reviews:

Very Not Friendly Guys
I very rarely pass by this place but today I passed by. While writing a review for a great place for car repair (Katy Auto Care) I saw the horrible reviews for this place. And I thought I would share a little story with you folks: About 5 years ago I came here and was nearly accosted by and employee and his motorcycle riding friend. I walked in to get them to take a look at a brake repair they had done on my s... view moreisters car. When I went in they said that they were closed for the day (20 minutes before the actual closing time). I asked them if there was any chance they could at least take a look at the car? Now I understand that it takes more than just staring at the brakes and saying, ""yep they`re broke"" but the employees friend looked at me and said, ""he said were F***** closed."" Yep, this actually happened, in a professional environment. I was cursed at and told to leave several times. It is surprising to me that reviews and employees like these guys have not shut this location down. I don`t know if this is a practice of Brake Check to hire guys like these but I most certainly will never return.

Sabateurs
Chalk up another bad review for Brake Check. I took my car in so they could reprogram my PCM. They told me that their best mechanic, Eddie, could do anything. After 3 weeks, I found out they did nothing because their computer system wasn`t updated, all because they were too lazy to do so, or due to lack of competence. I had my car towed out of the shop and took it to the dealership, whom informed me, in less than 24 ... view morehours, that my wiring harness was torn apart so badly, that this car would never run again. Thank you Brake Check, for sabatoging my car. I`m sure OSHA would LOVE to know about the numerous safety violations such as the safety locking pins on your lifts that are broken, putting both the customer and employee at fatal risk. The EPA would also love to know about your numerous violations, such as your employees washing brake fluid and oil down into the nearest sewer drain. The Fire Marshall would also be interested in knowing about the emergency exits in your shop that don`t work one bit. The BBB would love how you guys tell customers that in order to get an estimate on replacing a starter, you have to see the vehicle, then you ""ever so conveniently"" find other things wrong. Not to mention Texas Workforce commission, I`m sure they will look into how you guys ""pay"" employees commission, but as it turns out, making commission pays less than the minimum wage in Texas. Nice job running a shop Robert. Good luck in life.

worst place EVER!
This was by far the worst place I`ve ever had to deal with. I went there to receive maintenance and repair on my front breaks and rotors. I ended up getting new brakes and rotors (upon their recommendation) and left pretty satisfied with the price and timely response.

This is where it gets bad. About 5 days later, my driver`s side brake LITERALLY fell off. It didn`t shift or slightly move; it FELL OFF! ... view moreI took it back to brake check (luckily I was just down the road when this happened) and they repaired it. This time I left a little less satisfied then I was before, but gave them the benefit of the doubt and understood that these things happen (rarely, but they do).

Now it gets bad to worse. Two weeks after my driver side brake fell off, I started to hear a similar noise coming from my passenger side. I brought my car in to complain about the noise. They thought I should leave my car there over night so they can figure out what it was. They concluded that my rack and pin for my power steering had a SLIGHT leak and that I needed to get that repaired (about $800 dollars worth of repair, but they assured me that they can cut me a deal for $650). A lot more disgruntled and upset, I decided not to pursue repair and left.

A month later, the noise started to become UNBARRABLE. Every time I pushed on the brake, I`d here a thumping noise against my brake, as if someone was hitting it with a screw driver. I decided to take it to another mechanic for a second opinion. After looking at my brake for less than a minute, he told me that my brakes were missing their shims causing them to shift up.

I brought it back to Brake Check; what do you know, it was the shim! Oh, BTW, Toyota sent out a mass email to all mechanics that Toyotas NEED shims in order for them to properly work about 10 months ago. I got my brake done 3 months ago. You`d imagine they would pick this up.

Long story short, for a company that is named ""BRAKE CHECK,"" you`d imagine their core competency would be all about BRAKES! I made complaint after complaint to their corporate office. I demanded my money back. They told me that they can give me credit towards my Rack and Pin (about 80 dollars worth)... needless to say, I`m making a formal complaint to the better business borough.

Either incompetent or dishonest (?)
My 05 F150 4x2`s front rotors were warped. This appears to be a common problem. The rotors and wheel hub are integral on the 2WD and it takes 300 ft-lb of torque to install new rotors. I didn`t have the right tools and didn`t want to get into that job, so I had my wife take it there to give it a shot of turning the rotors on the truck and installing new pads. After she had dropped it off and they told her it ... view morewould be $300+, they called back later and said the rotors and hub were integral and they couldn`t turn them. Installing new rotors and pads would be $900. When she called me, I told her to pick it up and bring it home. If they didn`t know one of the most common vehicles on the road had integral rotors, they were either not knowledgable about their work, or were trying to take advantage of a woman. When she went to get the truck, they miraculously figured out that one of their other shops could turn the rotors on the truck...........not my truck. She brought it home, I got new rotors, the non-reusable spindle nuts and pads and pads. Harbor Freight had a 300 ft-lb torque wrench for $72. The rotor replacement was the easiest part of the job. As I was replacing the pads/rotors, I found that when they did their ""free"" inspection, and took the caliper off, they didn`t even tighten one caliper bolt......my 17 year old took it off with his fingers. I wouldn`t feel safe with any work they did. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

Good Experience
I have to say my experience was a good one. Robert and James run a really shop. I am completely satisfied.

Stay Away from Brake Check
Read the reviews here and elsewhere before taking your car to Brake Check. You`ll find common complaints about them. They are very expensive and use the bait and switch tactic to increase your repair bill. Once they start a repair job they come back with additonal problems that cost more than the original estimate. It happened to me and then I read this same tactic in other people`s reviews. Check out the review... view mores in Austin and surrounding cities. Do yourself a favor and find another garage to do the work. You`ll save yourself money and aggravation.

Extremely High Prices!
Many people think that Brake Check will Rip You Off.

I personally believe that they charge way too much for brake work!
They often recommend repairs that may or may not be necessary as well.

I had brakes done there and the next day two Chrysler dealership service managers said they thought I paid way too much! If the dealer thinks you paid too much, Wow!

The dealer quoted me $240 for the s... view moreame job that Brake Check charged me $427 for.
I guess I was the fool.

I would recommend going anywhere else.

RIP OFF
Went there to get free brake inspection.........That was the only free thing they offer. They gave me an estimate for $1200.00 for front brakes on my F350. So I went to dealer since I only had 28000 miles. The repair was done for $550.00.
