A Brief History:

Daytona 500 Special Edition Turbo Trans Am

In 1981, Pontiac produced a Special Edition (Y85) Turbo Trans Am for Nascar. This Special Edition Firebird Trans Am paced the field of stock cars at the 1981 Daytona 500, as well as various Nascar races that year. 2,000 Daytona 500 Turbo Trans Am Special Editions where built in '81. These cars differed slightly from the Indy pace cars from the previous year. They received an Oyster white paint job and black accents, rather than the gray ones from the year before. On the inside, these cars came with Recaro bucket seats with black and red cloth, which was a sharp contrast to the white and black paint scheme on the exterior.

Other features included: turbo gauges, Fisher t-top hatch roof, and white turbo cast aluminum wheels. Special Daytona Pace Car decals where shipped inside the cars for dealer installation, only if the buyer preferred the graphics. Released around February 1981 with a $12,244 base price, it looked similiar to the 1980 Indy Pace car Trans Am. However it had black, instead of charcoal, accents.

The NASCAR Trans Ams of '81 featured a re-designed screaming chicken used with the turbo hood. The white turbo rims accented the overall design of the car. Despite the lagging horse power numbers, these TAs featured the best suspension and some of the nicer creature comforts of any 2nd gen.

As you see from the info above this is truly one of the rarest Trans Am's made. I know it is not in excellent condition but it is not trash either. I bought it from a guy here on Ebay back in 2000. I had it hauled from Prestonsburg KY to San Antonio TX with the hopes of restoring it. It has been sitting in storage ever since. The floors are in good shape and the engine is sitting in my garage complete carb to pan along with all the turbo exhaust plumbing. The guy I got it from Alan Ranier said a tree had fallen across the hood and wiped out the hood and fenders. I would say the other branches made random dents in it as well. The only rust is surface rust on the cast iron rear end. The floor pans look nice and white. All in all it is a better starting point than where I started on my 1971 Trans Am!

Now that 77-81 Trans Am parts are being reproduced this should be a cost effective restoration with a current restored value of 20-22k and appreciating quickly now that it is over 30 years old.  Pick up and shipping must be paid by the buyer may be able to deliver for $ 1.50 a miles up to 800 miles. Happy Bidding!

GM recalling 426,000 sedans over faulty transmission shift cable

Fri, 21 Sep 2012

General Motors is recalling some 426,240 sedans that may have a faulty transmission shift cable, according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration report this morning. The recall concerns a fault within four-speed automatic transmissions equipped on 2007-2010 Saturn Aura models, and 2008-2010 Chevrolet Malibu and Pontiac G6 models.
The report specifies that tabs on the transmission shift cable may fracture and separate. Such a fault could cause a discrepancy between the actual position of the transmission and the apparent position of the shift lever.
GM is currently working to notify owners of the vehicles in question, and dealers will check and replace shift cables free of charge. Scroll down to read the complete NHTSA report.

General Lee takes on Bandit T/A in classic Hollywood car showdown [w/poll]

Fri, 26 Aug 2011

You don't have to be born in the 1960s or 1970s to be able to recognize the General Lee from The Dukes of Hazzard and the Pontiac Trans Am from Smokey and the Bandit. These old school four-wheeled stars seem to transcend demographics thanks to the miles of film that show the orange 1969 Dodge Charger and the jet-black 1977 Pontiac Trans Am performing seemingly impossible stunts.
The folks at Hot Rod magazine are obviously hip to this fact, and they put together a fun video in tribute of the instantly recognizable duo. Hit the jump to watch on as Sam Young and James Smith replace Bo Duke and The Bandit for a bit of dirt-road shenanigans in a pair of otherwise well cared for classics. We're not so sure we'd call it the best chase scene ever, but it sure looks like a lot of fun.
More importantly, which of these two cars would you rather own? Have your say in our poll below.

GM expands ignition switch recall to over 1.3 million cars amid climbing death toll

Tue, 25 Feb 2014

588,000 Saturn Sky, Saturn Ion, Pontiac Solstice and Chevy HHR models join the 778,000 cars already being recalled.
General Motors has announced a massive expansion of a 778,000-unit recall we told you about two weeks ago, doubling not only the total number of cars affected but expanding the recall beyond Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 models previously mentioned. The recall originally centered around ignition switches that could slip out of the "run" position if jostled or if any weight was applied to the key in the cylinder.
