1978 Mercedes Benz 240d W123 Diesel Sedan Project Car Needs Restoration on 2040-cars

Year:1978 Mileage:273156

This is my 1978 Mercedes Benz 240D Diesel Sedan. This car has treated me well, but sadly I lack the funds to properly maintain and restore her, therefore I am offering her for sale to the highest bidder.

The car currently has 273k miles. It does not leak or burn any fluids of any kind. I have replaced all gaskets - oil pan, valve cover, trans pan. Hoses and belts are new. The motor mounts are new.
It does have some vibration at idle in gear, which is due to a bad engine shock. The car has a manual glowplug button vs a relay, and starts easily in even the coldest of temperatures.

Compression Test Results:
#1 375PSI
#2 395PSI
#3 400PSI
#4 390PSI

The A/C does not work, the compressor is shot. However, the heat does function and it gets very hot.

The gauges all work, the clock works.

The 4 speed automatic shifts crisply and reliably, and this car is no slouch! It seems a bit faster than other 240D's I've owned in the past.

The car has some minor rust holes, of which I will be uploading pictures, and more details of the car as time becomes available.

On Jan-22-14 at 14:54:12 PST, seller added the following information:

 Rust spot locations and sizes:
3 inch long rust hole in left rear trunk floor, easily fixable.
Small rust spot under front bumper on right hand side (pictured above)
Quarter size hole on inside drivers side by your left foot (was patched by PO)

Floorboards are solid and in decent shape.
The door cards and interior trim is tobacco brown and seats are palamino. As you can see the interior needs some love.

The door jambs are different colors. One is red, 2 blue and 1 grey, as the doors have at some point been replaced by the PO.
Vacuum locks DO NOT WORK.
The car comes with an ignition key, but will need the locks rekeyed. The door locks do not work.

New details emerge on forthcoming Mercedes-Benz SLC

Sat, 02 Feb 2013

Last we heard, the Mercedes-Benz SLC had been put on indefinite hold, but now Car Magazine is reporting that the Porsche 911-fighting "Baby SLS" coupe could be on sale by 2015. Riding on a modified SLS AMG chassis, the smaller and lighter SLC could be priced in the sub-$100,000 price bracket.
We'd already heard that the new car would feature conventional doors (instead of SLS-like gullwing doors), but this report focuses on some of the possible powertrains Mercedes-Benz is likely to use. At launch, the SLC could offer a pair of V8-powered models - a 485-horsepower SLC and a 585-hp SLC S - both being powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8. About a year after launch, a new V6 model could emerge giving the SLC an estimated 333 horsepower and its lowest price point.
It also sounds like the car's name hasn't been completely finalized as some people within Mercedes are favoring a return of the SLR name.

Is Audi getting complacent and suffering from brain drain?

Wed, 27 Nov 2013

The argument is made in a Reuters article: Audi is falling behind other luxury brands, such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW, due to a lack of research-and-development spending and "brain drain," or the migration of top executives and R&D chiefs to other parts of the Volkswagen Group. Reuters notes that Audi's current R&D chief is the third in 16 months.
Audi, which contributed to 40 percent of VW Group's $11.6 billion in profit the first nine months of the year, is delivering cars at a record pace: 1.31 million were delivered from January to October 2013 versus BMW's 1.35 million. Yet Audi, Reuters reports, doesn't have a halo car akin to BMW's new electrified i3 and i8 or an answer to Mercedes' plug-in-hybrid S-Class, and the R&D spending at Audi is less than BMW and Mercedes by a fair margin. It's noted in the article, however, that Audi benefits from other R&D spending within VW Group.
Reuters mentions that BMW "trumpets its new 'i' series" and the new Mercedes CLA and GLA ranges are winning "rave reviews" as part of its argument that Audi's recent lack of technological innovation could hurt future sales. Those cars do pack tons of new technology, some of which are firsts for mainstream production cars. But last time we checked, the i3 could be causing BMW's stock to slide, the CLA isn't receiving the rave reviews that Reuters would have you believe and the GLA hasn't been reviewed yet.

Race Recap: Singapore Grand Prix is about a safety car and submission

Mon, 23 Sep 2013

The Singapore Formula One Grand Prix is the Monaco GP of the Orient - a weekend known more for its glamour and time-slot than on-track action, with a temporary circuit that punishes every mistake, usually terminally.
Lewis Hamilton in the Mercedes-AMG Petronas got the best of Free Practice 1, opening the curtain on a possible resurgence of Silver Arrows performance. By the time qualifying was done, though, it was his teammate Nico Rosberg who lined up second on the grid, followed by Romain Grosjean with a beautiful performance in the Lotus, Mark Webber in the Infiniti Red Bull, and Hamilton all the way back in fifth. Behind them were Felipe Massa outqualifying Ferrari teammate Fernando Alonso, Jenson Button getting the McLaren into eighth, Daniel Ricciardo with another good Q3 effort to get into ninth, and the shocker of Esteban Gutiérrez getting his Sauber into the top ten for the first time this year.
At the front of the pack was Sebastian Vettel. Again. But he was only ahead of Rosberg by a single tenth of a second...
