1976 Mercedes 280C, in all original, un-touched condition, with  working electric sunroof, low miles and factory A/C in original paint.

I rescued this car from a farmer's field in Washington.  I then spent the last few months working on it to get it running, cleaned up  and back on the road.

It now drives fantastically with its original matching number  dual overhead cam 3.8 litre engine. I own the single cam 250C also and this 280C is a much faster car.

EXTERIOR

The car is just as delivered from the factory with no modifications. Its still in its original paint. The paint is in good condition but has some nicks and a couple small dents too. I have had a paintless dent removal specialist work on the car to get the dings out and I have a second appointment to finish removing any remaining dings before the end of the auction.

The paint still shines well and has good depth overall. The only part the paint is faded to the primer is a section on the sunroof . There is some checking and cracking on the passenger side and part of the hood is blotchy which was polishing out the more I worked on the paint. It looks quite nice for 37 years old but if you want perfect, this is not the paint for you.

All the chrome and aluminum trim is original and still straight and  in good shape. The bumpers are nice with one small dent on the top of the rear bumper. The rubber impact strips and bumper guards are in very good condition. One of the roof rack rails is missing but I will try to find one to include with the car. All the belt moulding trim is very nice and straight except the driver's door trim which has 2 waves/ low spots in it. This piece is available from the dealer still.

Both doors do NOT have any rust in them or underneath. There are a few rust bubbles behind the rear wheel arch along the bottom under the side of the rear bumper. There is also some next to the battery tray from battery corrosion, thats it, otherwise a very SOLID rust-free car.

All the glass is the original Sekurit German glass including the original windshield. ITs a bit foggy in the corners but is not cracked or broken, kind of neat to see an original windshield still intact.

The hubcaps were in nice condition when I found the car but the center paint sections were faded, so I had them re-painted using the exact paint code - 903H- by the Mercedes Dealer Body Shop which had the original, factory masking tool, so the new matching blue paint in the middle looks perfect. The white wall tires are in good condition, they are a couple years old off my other car.

The left rear tail light lens is like new and the right side lens has some cracking on top. The rear right trim piece along the trunk is dented as seen in the photo, the left side is perfect. The trunk lock is not in these photos because I removed it to have it re-keyed to match all the other locks.

INTERIOR

The interior is all original except the rear shelf carpet and the seat back panels which I replaced. I ordered Mercedes blue loop carpet and re-made the piece in the back window since it was sun damaged. I also recovered the seat back with blue vinyl since they were missing.

The seats are in very nice condition and do not sag or need padding; and the springs are good too. The driver's seat has about a 3 inch section of seam which has come undone- its not ripped so an upholsterer can probably re-stich it.

Remarkably the rear seat is not faded or ripped.  The headliner is in excellent original condition with no rips or stains, including on the sunroof part. I removed and serviced the sunroof components, fixed the motor and now it works well and slides open and closed quietly.
The door windows work well as I removed the panels and re-reased the regulators and re-alligned the windows as they always roll up crooked. The back windows do not work.

The dash is cracked in a few places on the top and only one spot under the ignition but it comes with the carpet dash cover. The company CoverLay makes a great form fitted plastic dash cover which would be perfect for this car. The gauges are clean and all work except the clock, it was not plugged in and I did not climb under the dash to find the power wire. The cassette stereo works and all 4 original German Blaupunkt speakers work as well.

Both door panel pockets are perfect and are NOT cracked and attached as they should be- these are always dis-colored or broken.

The inside door top trim is also like new with no fade marks or cracks or blemishes- they are in like new condition both front and rear.

The center console has some cracks and chips in it as well, its not perfect but looks pretty good.

The steering wheel is in very nice condition with nor rips or cracks and the wheel center is in perfect condition.

MECHANICAL

The car driver superbly.

- rebuilt the carbs

- changed the fuel lines

-  new plugs wires

-  cleaned the fuel tank

- re-sealed the fuel pump

- de-greased the entire undercarraige and engine

- steamed the entire undercarraige and engine

- detailed the chassis and polished under the fenders since the paint was in remarkable condition

- changed belts with new German Conitech belts

- new thermostat

- flushed radiator

- replace hoses as needed

- oil change

- filter change

- brand new Geman hood pad I ordered from the Mercedes Dealer $$

- shifter bushings

- new heavy duty battery

The car may need more work as more miles are put on it but I have driven it a few hundred miles recently and fixed things as needed along the way. The vaccum pump is not hooked up.

The A/C does not work but the clutch on the compressor does work. Its still R12 and has not been converted to R234 so if you get it working with Freeze12 it may be nice and cold!

The car runs, drives, shifts and stops beautifully. It does not have any hard or slip shifting- none. When I park it in my driveway it does NOT leak either.  It doesn't stumble which is characteristic of these carbs when not re-built properly. It warms up with the choke properly too.

The car comes with a clear title in my name. This car was apparently made in the last months of the entire w114 w115 production line of more than 2 million cars!

Please examine the photos carefully and ask any questions before the end of the auction. $750 deposit within 48 hours of the end of the auction. The balance must be paid in full within 7 days of the end of the auction. I will only store the car 10 days from the end of the auction so figure that into your bidding/ buying. No zero feedback bidders. I have the right to end the auction early. I can help with the loading of the car should you want to have it shipped. I encourage you to look at the car in person BEFORE the end of the auction if possible. I have more photos too. Its located in San Fernando, Ca @30 minutes north of Downtown Los Angeles.

Aston Martin and Daimler continue talks on SUV project, CEO required

Tue, 01 Apr 2014

The Aston Martin Lagonda SUV concept revealed at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show didn't earn the plaudits the company is used to when it reveals new models, and it has lived an uncertain life ever since. Thought to have been scrapped along with the entire revival of the Lagonda brand, then thought to have been resurrected due to Chinese, Middle Eastern and Russian demand, another year passed before we heard more definitive talk about an Aston Martin expansion when AutoCar reported that the Lagonda could be built on one of Mercedes-Benz's AMG SUV platforms.
A report in Automotive News Europe indicates plans have gotten serious, its unnamed sources saying that the English carmaker is talking to Daimler "to extend their cooperation to building an SUV." Neither Daimler, Aston Martin nor Investindustrial, the managing partner among Aston Martin's ownership consortium, would comment. But with Investindustrial having pledged to expand the range, competitors like Bentley, Maserati and Lamborghini getting into the SUV racket and clear demand from current and future customers, it's easy to believe Aston Martin is working hard to put the pieces together.
One further potential bump on the road to an Aston SUV is the company's search for a new CEO. Ulrich Bez relinquished to top spot at the company at the end of 2013, and Aston reportedly will not finalize its model strategy without a new CEO in place.

Firing of M-B boss upheld

Mon, 15 Jul 2013

Ernst Lieb, the disgraced former CEO of American operations for Mercedes-Benz, will not be getting any more money from the Silver Arrow'd teat. His wrongful dismissal suit against MB's parent company, Daimler, was tossed out of a German appeals panel. This, followed the initial rejection by a lower court last year.
According to court documents acquired by Automotive News, Lieb was found to have "accepted payments of substantial value to which he - as he was aware - had no claim."
Lieb took over American operations from former CEO Paul Halata in September of 2006. Reports surfaced in October of 2011 that Lieb was dismissed from his posting at MB, with a variety of rumors swirling. Eventually, news broke that financial wrong doing was responsible for the German's firing.

Erebus Motorsport Mercedes E-Class V8 Supercar completes the field [w/videos]

Sat, 23 Feb 2013

Ford, Holden and Nissan introduced their V8 Supercar challengers a while back. Erebus Motorport, whose racing program got the green light not even 120 days ago, has finally shown off the Mercedes-Benz E-Class racer that will complete this year's field of entries. The first AMG race car ever to be built outside of Germany, it's an Australian-built tube-frame chassis specced to the series' Car of Tomorrow rules, fitted with body panels that channel the E63 AMG.
Supported by AMG Customer Motorsport, the 5.0-liter engine is provided by HWA in Germany, the racing arm of AMG. Regulations dictate that it have roughly 650 horsepower, a redline between 7,000 and 7,500 rpm and a torque curve that matches the parity baseline set for all cars.
Lee Holdsworth, Tim Slade and Maro Engel will drive the three team cars, each with different sponsors. Their first showing will be at the Clipsal 500 on March 3 in Adelaide, here in the US we'll get to see them in May at the Circuit of the Americas. Check out the videos below of the Erebus car starting up at its launch, and footage of all of this year's cars doing pre-season testing on track together.
