So I have decided to sell my BMW. Remember the commercial that asked "when does a car stop being a car and become an old friend?" This is one of those cars. If you drive a single cam Honda with a fart can exhaust and think popping it off the rev limiter is cool, don't even bid. If you cannot afford to maintain a BMW, or are not able or willing to learn to work on it, don't waste my time. This car deserves respect and love.

So what make it so great? Well Duh, it has damn near 300k on the clock. Have I babied the car? Nope but I have also not abused it. It has a Dinan transmission and engine rewrite so it will run pretty good. It has been on the track a couple of times but not very often. When it was it had a lot of fun an thanked me for it.

I have owned it for nearly 10 years, since it had 116K, and am really torn on getting rid of it. I am the third owner and my brother was the second. The first owner ran up 80k in the first three years. Then his wife blew the motor because she did not get the concept of all those pretty lights might mean something BAD! Once it was replaced she refused to drive it so it was sold. It has been in our family since it was 3 years old. I do not have to sell, but I kind of have been thinking I want a Porsche.

The basics.. The car has new paint,  factory sport seats, new tires, LED tail lights projector head lights, MTech front bumper, new rims a couple of years ago, Eibach springs, Bilstien Shocks, Poly RTAB's and probably some more things I don't remember. So what about the engine and tranny? Well the engine is still strong and pulls like it should. When I asked my mechanic about it a few months ago he told me if there was any loss of compression it would be throwing check engine lights. It has no check engine lights. The transmission was changed at about 220k. Considering everyone said that transmission was only good for 100, I felt pretty good about it. The starter was replaced at 260, the fuel pump at 270. I replaced the drive shaft at 220 as more of a PM issue than anything else. Last year I had the AC recharged but there were no leaks and it still blows cold and heat blows hot. I also have replaced all but one of the hoses in the last 50k along with the water pump. If you know BMW, you know the water pumps are cheap, easy to replace and 60k is good PM. It has always had synthetic oil and for the last several years it has been Castrol Edge Titanium.  If there are any oil leaks, they are small and the car does not require oil between changes.

Does it have any issues? Well of course, it has damn near 300k. It has a power steering leak that I have just not had time to fix but I have the parts. Some ass hat screwed up my suede headliner and there is a spot on the right rear where he got glue on it. I have not had time to finish the rest of the suede conversion but I have the suede that will go with it along with the parts to replace the sunroof inside shade. Any parts I have laying around will go with it. It is going to need to have the rest of the rear sub frame bushings done and I would recommend doing the sub frame reinforcement just to be on the safe side.  The airbag light is on and I think it is the module between the front seats.  The taillight out light is on but that is a resistor on the left rear light that needs to be re soldered.  Al the lights work and the LED's blink at proper speed. The front left turn signal cover could use a replace as the inside tabs are broken on it and it seems to like to come out on occasion.  One or two small scratches but they are very hard to find.  The left front door does not quite match the left rear as the paint is a beast to try to spray.  It is close and most will never notice but I see it like it is two completely different colors. Every once in a while the AC gets wonky and does not come out of the proper vents and you have to cycle it manually to get the one you want. I cannot think of any other issues but I am open to any questions.  I would really like this car to find a good home.

Would I drive this car across country?  Yea, I really would.  Power steering leak and all.  Would I let my 16 year old son drive this car?  Only if he was not a turd and was going to slam a fart can on the back.  But safety wise yes.  While this is an amazing car, it is a 15 year old car.  The engine does have over 200,000 miles on it.  It is well taken care of and I seriously think it will make 400 if it cared for.  While I trust this car a lot, and I would drive it anywhere, I also have the ability to fix most things that could go wrong.  Please remember that if you are thinking of buying this car for your kid who knows nothing about cars and is headed to college 3 states away.

BMW i8 Spyder gets production nod

Wed, 18 Dec 2013

BMW could be poised to expand its i8 range, beyond the hardtop version of the plug-in hybrid supercar. A report from Bimmerpost is claiming that the i8 Spyder, which we showed you in concept form at the 2012 Beijing Motor Show, will be heading to production.
The website claims the open-roof fuel-sipper was shown to BMW management last Friday as a production-intent model. Other than that, there's not a lot to tell here. The i8 Spyder should feature all the same mechanical and aesthetic features found on the i8 Coupe, just without the confining nature of a roof. It's unclear when we'll see a production i8 droptop make its debut, although this certainly strikes us as the kind of car that should arrive at the Geneva Motor Show.
While an i8 Spyder does seem like a logical leap for BMW's i sub-brand, we're going to keep this one filed under the rumors category until we hear more.

BMW slapped with discrimination suit by EEOC

Thu, 13 Jun 2013

According to a report from CNNMoney, BMW has been hit with a lawsuit from the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission after revised criminal background check policies resulted in the dismissal of 88 contractors, 70 of whom (that's about 80 percent) were black. A total of 645 contractors were required to submit to background checks at BMW's facility in Spartanburg, South Carolina after BMW switched contract companies at its plant.
Though the 88 persons who were not rehired by the new contractor all had criminal records, that may not necessarily be a legal way to screen applicants, as the EEOC counters: "BMW's policy has no time limit with regard to convictions. The policy is a blanket exclusion without any individualized assessment of the nature and gravity of the crimes, the ages of the convictions, or the nature of the claimants' respective positions."
BMW's actions were in violation of the Civic Rights Act of 1964, according to the EEOC, because they utilized "a criminal conviction policy that disproportionately screened out African-Americans." A recent bulletin offering guidance from the EEOC on the Civil Rights Act can be found here, but the EEOC's stance on the issue has been the same for years: "Since issuing its first written policy guidance in the 1980s regarding the use of arrest and conviction records in employment decisions, the EEOC has advised employers that under certain circumstances, their use of that information to deny employment opportunities could be at odds with Title VII."

2016 BMW 7 Series spied for the first time ever

Thu, 28 Feb 2013

Ladies and gentlemen, Bimmerphiles and automotive voyeurs of all stripes: here is your next-generation BMW 7 Series. Captured in photographs for the first time ever while doing a spot of cold-weather testing in Sweden, this newly slim 7er will most likely debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2015 and launch in the 2016 model year.
Sources indicate that BMW is targeting a much lighter curb weight for the 7 Series, and will use learnings gained with the i3 and i8 development to add carbon fiber-reinforced plastics in the construction. In return we'd expect the new model - which uses the internal model designation "G11" - to offer improvements in handling, acceleration and fuel economy. As with the current 7 Series lineup, expect the engine range to include turbocharged inline-six engines, one or more V8s and a V12 option.
It's fair to say that, with the car's debut still years down the road, that BMW will work to launch with an impressive suite of in-car technology, too. A completely new version of iDrive shouldn't be ruled out. These shots mark the beginning of a long journey to 2015, and we expect to have loads more information to share in the coming months and years, so stay tuned.
