Selling our 1975 VW convertible as it is spending too much time covered and stored away in our garage.  This vehicle has absolutely no rust and only very minor stone chips on the front of the rear fenders.  It was professionally painted the correct original color and the Haartz black canvas top was professionally installed.  There are no tears or wrinkles from being folded down.  The white interior headliner is perfect.

The motor is original; converted to carburetor, as 1975 was the first year for fuel injection and Volkswagen had lots of problems with their fuel system in the early years.  The transmission clutch, pressure plate and throw-out bearing are all relatively new;  less than 1,000 miles approximately.  For brakes, the front has been updated with disc brakes and the rear brakes are the original drum design.  The heater works fine, but this car has not been used in cold or inclement weather.  The exhaust is the correct design.  The tires are the correct size (Kelly Metric 165R 15) and are in near-new condition.  The wheels are after-market chrome, purchased from Mid America Motorworks.

New square-weave carpeting and new seat covers and seat foam have been installed.  The rest of the interior is original.  The AM/FM radio is original.  The speedometer cable broke last summer, so the stated mileage is ever so slightly off.

This car has been pampered its entire life.  It is a Midwest vehicle;  first owner in Ohio.  This is not a car from out west or one that has been patched together.  In the 17 years we have owned it we have driven the car less than 1,000 miles.  Obviously, this car has spent considerable time stored away from bad weather.

Buyer is responsible for pick-up or transport.  A $500 deposit is due within 48 hours of end of auction.  Acceptable payments include:  cash in person, PayPal or certified check drawn from local (Oakland County, MI) Chase Bank branch.  The vehicle and title will not be released before receipt of full payment has been verified by my (Chase) bank.

VW to announce $1B investment in Mexico plant

Sun, Mar 8 2015

Big news south of the border could be slated for later this week, as Automotive News is reporting that the Volkswagen Group will announce a $1-billion investment in the company's Puebla factory. The company officially declined to comment, but AN is claiming the investment in the Puebla facility, which has been operating for over five decades, will add 1,900 jobs to the nearly 16,000-strong workforce. According to AN, a person familiar with the situation in Puebla claims the investment will support production of the next-generation Tiguan, slated to arrive in 2017. The Puebla factory currently produces Golf, while total output last year nearly hit half a million vehicles, or about 15 percent of Mexico's total automotive output. VW diesel incentives could be fuel for prosecutors

Wed, Sep 30 2015

In the 2000s, Volkswagen was among the companies that lobbied the government to get buyers of diesel vehicles a tax credit. The automaker even brought some of these models to Washington to show them to politicians. The incentive eventually passed, and about 39,500 customers of the 2009 Jetta TDI and Jetta SportWagen TDI got a $1,300 benefit – for a total cost of around $51 million. Now, according to Reuters, that politicking might come back to bite the automaker when prosecutors finally get cases to trial. The US Department of Justice, the Environmental Protection Agency, and attorneys general in at least 29 states are already investigating VW, and politicians are pushing for criminal and civil actions against the company. According to Reuters, there could be several legal routes available, too. One option is to bring tax fraud charges, and that would require proving the automaker knew it was making untrue claims about the diesel models. There's also the option of bringing a case under the False Claims Act, which prohibits fraud against the government. According to Reuters, a maximum penalty under the law would be three times the tax credit and another $5,000 for each vehicle that received it. The company is also facing a class-action lawsuit from disgruntled owners. To aid its defense against all of these claims, VW has hired the same firm that worked with BP during the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Outside of the US, prosecutors in Germany have just started to build a case against former CEO Martin Winterkorn for alleged fraud. In addition to these potential legal penalties, VW could be fined around $18 billion by the EPA for the emissions infractions. The agency's investigation is getting the added backing of its Canadian counterpart. Although, the actual settlement is expected to be far less.

VW going turbo-only in 3 to 4 years

Wed, 18 Sep 2013

This really was a matter of when, rather than if. Volkswagen will apparently be the first manufacturer to phase out naturally aspirated engines in favor of turbocharging its full slate. VW is kind of responsible for ushering in this push towards small-displacement, turbocharged engines that's taken the industry by storm. When it dropped its direct-injection, 2.0-liter turbo in the 2005 GTI it demonstrated that strapping an iron long to an engine can enhance the powertrain as a whole. VW made fuel economy gains, while also giving a linear, non-laggy turbo experience that it has replicated, model-after-model, to this day.
Speaking with The Detroit News, Volkswagen's executive Vice President of Group Quality, Marc Trahan, told the paper that, "We only have one normally aspirated gas engine, and when we go to the next generation vehicle that it's in, it will be replaced. So three, four years maximum."
Really, it's hard to get teary-eyed about either of these engines going away. VW has access to smaller powerplants that could easily match the performance of the 2.5 five-cylinder and the 3.6 V6, while gobbling up less fuel and providing a better driving experience. What we are sad about is that a similar statement about the extinction of NA engines came from the Vice President of Powertrain Engineering at Ford, Joe Bakaj. We'd certainly get teary-eyed over a world without Ford's excellent 5.0-liter V8.
