The time has come to sell my beloved jetta in hopes that someone will get as much enjoyment out of it as i did. It is a 1984 1.6 factory turbo diesel 5 speed. I have done alot of work to the car over the years and taken very good care of it.

It belonged to my cousin who bought it from the original owner out of north carolina. My cousin would drive the car back and fourth from n.c. to lititz pa to visit her family. She eventually gave it to her father who drove it around town on occasion. He had a local vw specialist do all the work to the car before i got it.

Once he sold it to me i drove it around for about a month until the injection pump went out do to bad injectors. The car sat for a couple years until i had the pump fixed and the injectors rebuilt. when I was installing the injectors I cracked the head at the bottom of the threads. I removed the head and had it welded and installed new gaskets and out it back together. The car has been this way for several years now with zero problems. It has 197,000 miles on the motor the trans was replaced with one from an eco diesel and the 5th gear (.71) from the original trans was installed for long distance driving. I still have the original trans but the diff broke so not sure how much is good with it. The pump has been tweaked slightly and a boost controller installed to allow it to run 20 psi of boost with minimal smoke. The exhaust is custom 2.5" mandrel bent from turbo back with no muffler or cat. I have installed aftermarket boost, egt, and oil pressure gauges in the factory center console to keep an eye on everything. The air conditioning has been gone over and all internals cleaned and re-charged with r 134. The heater core was replaced a couple years ago. Both heat and a/c work.

About 2 years ago I had a friend who is a painter sand the whole car down and repaint the car in the original color gambia red. At that time I found a euro jetta front end and clear corners and euro jetta bumpers and installed them. The tail lights are cheap knockoff clear tails that i fixed to keep from leaking and seal to the car and painted red. I have the original tail lights as well. It has raceland coils, all new suspension bushings and new control arms as well as new inner and outer tie rod ends. I bought a set of 2.5" osvw strut caps with mk4 bushings. I just put new brakes on the front and upgraded to the gli pads and rotors.

The interior is all original with the exception of the 4 button turbo diesel steering wheel i got from overseas. It is in good shape for its age with no tears in the seats. The headliner has a couple small tears in it one of which i repaired but it is not sagging. The front windshield seal is new and new chrome was installed in the front and rear seals. It doeas have a factory sunroof that works and doesnt leak. It has a fairly new seal on it as well.

As of now the car has 13" bmw turbine wheels with 165/65-13. I still have the gold rota 15" wheels and will consider selling them with the car for the asking price.

Volkswagen may soon have remedy for more cheating diesels

Tue, May 10 2016

Nearly a half-million motorists who own Volkswagens equipped with 2.0-liter engines have known for a few weeks the company might wind up buying back their vehicles as part of a settlement surrounding the company's emissions cheating. But about 85,000 drivers who own similarly afflicted diesels with 3.0-liter engines have been stuck without a remedy. They may not be waiting much longer. Bloomberg reports that Volkswagen will soon propose a fix for vehicles, including those from Audi and Porsche, equipped with 3.0-liter engines that will include new software and a new catalytic converter for the vehicles. Discussions with federal regulators are ongoing, according to the news outlet. "We are cooperating with the regulatory agencies and working with them on an approved solution," says Audi spokesperson Mark Clothier. "Beyond that, we cannot comment on ongoing investigations." Regulators have alleged that the company's 3.0-liter engines contain "defeat devices," illegal software that allows a vehicle to detect when it's undergoing an emissions test and turn off pollution control during real-world driving. The defeat device allows these vehicles to increase emissions of nitrogen oxide up to nine times the Environmental Protection Agency's allowable threshold. Affected 3.0-liter vehicles include the 2014 Volkswagen Toureg, 2015 Porsche Cayenne and the 2016 Audi A6 Quattro, A7 Quattro, A8, A8L and Q5. Volkswagen is slated to finalize its plans for buying back the afflicted 2.0-liter cars and potentially offer those motorists "substantial compensation" for their troubles by June 21, and it's possible that a formal announcement on the 3.0-liter vehicles would come at the same time. VW joins Daimler's protest of new A/C refrigerant as EU deadline for compliance passes

Sun, 06 Jan 2013

The case of Dupont and Honeywell's refrigerant R-1234yf is doing the exact opposite of keeping things cool. The two chemical companies have spent years and hundreds of millions of dollars developing R-1234yf to replace R-134a, the new refrigerant shown to be 99.7-percent kinder to the environment than the one it is meant to succeed. Part of that development has been years of testing by governments, outside safety agencies and automakers to approve the chemical for use in cars. It passed the protocols necessary for the European Union to declare that new and significantly revised cars from 2013 onward needed to use R-1234yf, and mandated that every car as of 2017 must use it.
Enter Daimler AG. The automaker created a head-on collision test with a B-Class at their Sindelfingen test track that would lead to the pressurized refrigerant being sprayed on the engine. The result in 20 out of 20 test was that the refrigerant burst into flames as soon as it hit the hot engine, while Daimler says that R-134a does not catch fire in the same test. Another unexpected result of the R-1234yf test was the release of hydrogen flouride, a chemical far more deadly to humans than hydrogen cyanide, emitted in such amounts that it that turned the windshield white as it began to eat into the glass.
Said a Daimler engineer in a Reuters piece, "It was scarcely believable. The most complicated lab tests conducted using the most sensitive measuring instruments around found nothing and all we do is drive a car around a couple of times, open a tiny hole in the refrigerant line and the next thing you know the car is on fire." So Daimler said it wouldn't use the refrigerant, and it recalled the cars it had already shipped with R-1234yf.

Anti-UAW VW workers move to form own union

Sat, 30 Aug 2014

The struggle over unionization at the Volkswagen factory in Chattanooga, TN, continues to get more complicated. There's now a second union fighting to organize at the plant; although this one is staunchly against the actions of the United Auto Workers. At the same time, the UAW is still signing up voluntary members to its recently created Local 42 at the facility and is reportedly near having a majority of the hourly employees on its side.
The new, anti-UAW union campaign is being spearheaded by employee Mike Burton, according to Reuters, and he calls his group the American Council of Employees. He claims to already have 108 signatures in support of his organization. Burton believes that the UAW is harmful to businesses, and his goal is to force another vote to determine a preferred union among workers.
The UAW was initially defeated (712 to 626) when it attempted a union vote at the Tennessee plant in February. However, UAW secretary-treasurer Gary Casteel told Reuters that Local 42 has already signed up over 700 members. If it can reach a majority of the roughly 1,500 employees, the group hopes VW might consider recognizing it as the factory's union.
