Autoblog Minute: VW 'tip of the iceberg' in diesel emissions scandal
Sat, Sep 26 2015Some are calling Volkswagen just the tip of the iceberg in the diesel emissions scandal. Autoblog's Adam Morath reports on this edition of Autoblog Minute. Show full video transcript text [00:00:00] Some are calling Volkswagen just the tip of the iceberg in the diesel emissions scandal. I'm Adam Morath and this is your Autoblog Minute. Here in the U.S. the EPA found defeat devices on certain Volkswagen vehicles. Across the pond however concerned environmentalist groups including [00:00:30] Transportation & Environment say that the issues could be more widespread in Europe. Nico Muzi, a spoken for Transportation and Environment was quoted in the Automotive News as saying: "Volkswagen is just the tip of the iceberg..." Muzi goes on to claim that cheating is widespread, and that results produced from European emissions tests, which are not administered by a government agency, show differences in data that "...are so much, it can't be explained." Clean vehicle manager at Transport & Environment Greg Archer spoke to Bloomberg Business about the need to reform emissions testing in Europe: [00:01:00] [Bloomberg Video Clip] While it's clear that automakers are engineering vehicles and software to perform well on emissions tests, the real question is whether or not other OEMs, besides Volkswagen, are using defeat devices to cheat the tests, either here or in Europe. VW Jetta TDI Value Edition drops price of diesel ownership to $21,295*
Wed, 08 Jan 2014Getting a new diesel-powered car just got a bit easier. Volkswagen has announced a new Jetta TDI Value Edition for 2014 that trims over $2,000 off the starting price of a Jetta TDI, making the most affordable diesel-powered car in America even more so. Prices start at $21,295 (*plus $820 for destination) for a Value Edition with a six-speed manual transmission, while a six-speed dual-clutch automatic adds $1,100 to the price. For that money, owners will get 140 horsepower, 236 pound-feet of torque and 42 miles per gallon on the freeway.
Despite the lower price and being down on content versus the previous base Jetta TDI, the Value Edition does come quite well equipped, with standard heated cloth seats, a six-speaker stereo with a Media Device Interface, satellite radio, and one-touch, up-down power windows on all four doors. Customers will be giving up some notable stuff though, including tilt/telescopic steering, Bluetooth streaming audio, power seats and a multi-function steering wheel.
Still, if you're aching to get your hands on a new TDI, this is now the most affordable way to do it. We suspect having the lower MSRP will help the German manufacturer make even further diesel-powered inroads here in the States, a land where they cleared their decks of over 100,000 TDI models in 2013.
French police search VW offices in emissions probe
Tue, Oct 20 2015French authorities have searched the headquarters of Volkswagen France as part of a local investigation into the emissions testing scandal at the German automaker. Investigators from France's environment and public health office conducted the searches Friday at Volkswagen France's offices in Villers-Cotterets, 52 miles north of Paris, and seized computer equipment, the Paris prosecutor's office said Sunday. A spokeswoman for Volkswagen France, Leslie Peltier, confirmed the searches and said Volkswagen is fully cooperating with the police. In Spain, prosecutors have called on the National Court to open a probe of Volkswagen for possible fraud and environmental offences in connection with the emissions scandal at the German automaker. The court's prosecutor's office sent the recommendation Monday to investigative magistrate Ismael Moreno, saying the alleged offences could have affected people across Spain. It said that given that the cars in question qualified for subsidies from the government, they also constitute possible fraud against the state. The prosecutors were acting on complaints filed by the Spanish anti-corruption group Manos Limpias (Clean Hands) and a victims' association. Volkswagen's Spanish subsidiary SEAT said it fitted 700,000 vehicles with the EA 189 diesel engines that had software enabling them to cheat on emissions tests. Volkswagen says 11 million cars worldwide have such software. The automaker has hired Christine Hohmann-Dennhardt away from Daimler to help the company, and perhaps the entire German automobile industry, recover from VW's diesel emissions scandal. Governments around the world are working on new emissions tests that may drive the price of diesel vehicles higher than buyers are willing to pay.
