Hello,
I have owned this car since 2005 and have driven it 40k miles since I have owned it. I bought it as a weekend / hobby car because we wanted a convertible to enjoy here in sunny Southern California.
The car has Power Steering, Power Brakes, 1.8L 4 cylinder engine, and 5 speed manual stick shift transmission. It has power front windows, but manual rear windows. It has factory air conditioning. The car has an Alpine AM/FM CD stereo with detachable face plate. It has Blaupunkt speakers in the front doors. It also has speakers in the back seat area.
The car starts and runs very well. It drives well. It has been very reliable. The interior was replaced by the previous owner, and is still in very good condition.
The car had a salvage title when I bought it. I have copies of the registration from the previous owner so I can prove that it had a salvage title when I bought it. I bought it with 133K miles, and it now has 173K miles.
Here is a list of "the Good" about the car:
I have stored the car in my garage, and have had alot of work done to keep the car in good condition. The oil and filter have been changed regularly. Here is a list of some of the items that have been replaced since I have owned the car:
New Convertible Top (when I got the car the existing top had holes in it)
Timing belt was relaced.
Completely rebuilt cooling system including:
new radiator
new water pump
new pressurized reservoir
new thermostat
new thermostat housing and hose flanges
new coolant fan temperature switch
new hoses
new belts
New Oil Pump and oil pan gasket
Front suspension was completely rebuilt
new gas struts
new strut mount bearings
new control arms
new control arm bushings
new ball joints
new tie rod ends.
new front hubs
new front hub bearings
new axle shafts with CV joints
new front brake rotors and brake pads
Gear shift mechanism has been rebuilt with new bushings.
Clutch cable has been replaced.
Rear drum brake shoes have been replaced.
Rear drum brake hydraulic cylinders have been replaced.
Rear wheel bearings and seals have been replaced.
Ignition switch has been replaced.
All 4 Tires are fairly new and have 90% tread on them.
Approximately 8 months ago a new Catalytic converter and new oxygen sensor was installed ($500) and the car easily passed the California Smog test. The car has been driven very little since then, as I bought a newer car in January 2013.
Battery has been replaced.
Here is a list of "the Bad" about the car:
The paint has some fading, oxidation, and chips (but it is still shiny).
The car has a small oil or powersteering leak. I don't know which. I purchased replacement power steering hoses ($150) but have not had time to get them installed. I will give them to the buyer.
The airconditioning does not work. I had it professionally recharged with freon twice, and it worked for a month or so and then stopped working again. The last shop that recharged the system put diagnostic dye in the a/c system and told me that freon is leaking out the compressor seals. A replacement compressor is available from www_dot_GermanuAutoParts dot_com or www dot AutoHausAz_dot_com for approximately $250 plus installation.
This car was made with only a drivers side air bag. The air bag lights were on when I bought the car. I have read that this is a common problem with these old 1st and second generation watercooled Volkswagens.
Summary:
The car is not perfect, but is clean, reliable, looks pretty good, is fun to drive, gets good gas mileage, and is easy to park. It would make a very nice first car for someone, or perhaps a nice weekend convertible to go to the beach, or wherever?
I have tried to accurately describe the condition of the car. Please be aware that it is a 23 year old car and not a new car. It has some wear and tear, and squeaks and rattles, as is typical for a 23 year old car with 173k miles. Sale is final - no returns. All information deemed reliable but not guaranteed. There is no warranty expressed or implied.
I have the car for sale locally, so I reserve the right to end the listing/sale at any time.
Please only bid if you are serious about buying the car, and you have the money to pay in full.
Thank you for looking.

VW builds 250,000th Passat in Chattanooga in just two years
Sun, 26 May 2013It hasn't been without incident or union organizing drive, but the Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, TN has built its 250,000 Passat in just a little over two years. The Night Blue Passat TDI with black leather has come just two years and five weeks after the first customer car came off the line on April 18, 2011.
In the last year the plant operated at the 150,000-unit capacity that it was intended for, but the downturn in Passat sales and subsequent worker layoffs mean it will be a challenge to repeat the feat. The plant does have the world's largest solar park, though, and you can't take that away from them.

UK auto magazine says this is the best car commercial of all time [w/videos]
Thu, 20 Dec 2012There have been many great car commercials over the years, but is it possible to define the best? Well, Ad Week recently took a crack at it by rating the top commercials of the year by looking at their view counts on YouTube, but Auto Express took a more democratic approach by putting the decision to a vote. Just after Thanksgiving, Auto Express came up with a list of the 20 popular commercials, and it tasked its readers with choosing the winner for the best car ad of all time. The winner? Honda's 2003 commercial for its then-new European Accord titled "The Cog."
While the ad never aired in the US, most car people have surely seen the impressive Rube Goldberg-style spot. In fact, the only commercial on this list that we saw on US television was the Volkswagen ad "The Force," but many of the others have become viral videos, including transforming and dancing Citroën C4. Of the 19 other commercials that vied for the title of best ad of all time, only the Ford Puma "Steve McQueen" commercial gave Honda a run for its advertising money.
Scroll down to watch Auto Express' top five commercial in order and to check out a press release, then let us know some of your favorite car commercials in Comments.
Volkswagen Motorsport cranks out Golf touring car
Fri, Jul 10 2015Just when you thought Volkswagen had done all the hot Golfs we could handle, its motorsports division has come out with an even hotter one. This racing version is built to compete in the Touringcar Racer International Series (TCR) across Europe and Asia, and certainly looks the part. Based on the production Golf hatchback we all know, the TCR competition version promises to be to circuit-based touring car racing what the Polo R WRC is to the rally stage. And that little pocket rocket has been positively dominating the World Rally Championship. Developed in conjunction with Seat's racing department and Liqui Moly Team Engstler, the Golf touring car packs the 2.0-liter turbo four from the Golf R. Only instead of 292 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque in the production version, it's been tuned to channel 330 hp and 302 lb-ft to the front wheels (instead of all four) through a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. It rides on 18-inch alloys fitted to a track widened by nearly a foot and a half, along with a competition-spec aero kit to keep it glued to the tarmac and a stripped-out cockpit. Though the 2015 TCR series is already under way, a pair of these racing Golfs will be entered in the upcoming round at the Red Bull Ring in Austria, before the series heads off to Singapore (in support of the F1 grand prix there) and Thailand ahead of the final round in Macau. If everything goes well, customer teams will be able to pick these up and enter them in next year's championship. Volkswagen develops new Golf for the racetrack - Concept car for customer racing, in line with new TCR regulations - Production-based touring car with 330 hp, front-wheel drive and six-speed DSG gearbox - First competitive test this weekend in Spielberg (A) Wolfsburg (09 July 2015). A new Golf for the racetrack: Volkswagen Motorsport is developing its first racing car based on the seventh generation Golf. The production-based, 330-hp concept car is assembled in accordance with TCR regulations and is intended to help Volkswagen evaluate a potential customer racing programme from the 2016 season onwards. In order to accelerate the development of the car, the new Golf will be tested under competitive conditions between now and the end of the season: as cooperation partner, the Liqui Moly Team Engstler will run two cars at the eighth round of the Touringcar Racer International Series (TCR) at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg (A).
