1978 Swiss Fire Rescue Crew Cab, 54,000 original miles! This beautiful Crew Cab served as a Swiss Army Fire Rescue and EMT response unit in the small village of Saas-Balen, just outside of Zurich. It comes complete with the original hoops and canvas canopy, blue BOSCH emergency light and sirens, very nice HWE commercial roof rack, canvas and wood litter, 1978 owner's manual(English version), original Swiss Army maintenance log book through 1983. The truck stayed in Switzerland until 2005, where it had its last driving permit. In the years since then, it has been in the hands of VW collectors. The body is in very nice condition, exceptionally dry, impressively straight, and was resprayed in the original color of Pastel White (L90D). The truck bed, gates, and floors are way above average, as you can see in the extensive album of photos. Details to note include the refinished original bed and canopy wood strips. Therear flap of the canopy is torn, but there is an extra original piece of canvas available for repairs. The interior is exceptionally clean and has been reupholstered in the correct color and pattern material. Sound deadener was installed behind the paneling to reduce road noise as well. Take note of the cleanliness of the dash, original headliner, and the floors, front and rear. Mechanically, it is a nice driver with just over 54,000 original miles. The 1700 cc engine runs well, the entire braking system was rebuilt in 2011, including cylinders, pads, and lines. Additionally, it received a new clutch, a new set of tires, and a tachometer at that time. This is a very rare truck. You will NOT find another one in the US. The truck is in perfect condition. There are other 78's available, but not with any provenance. This is the last vehicle of my twenty-two car collection. Double cabs are appreciating in value and newer ones should be in the $50,000 range soon. I have more photos of the undercarriage and details of the body if you want. |

Volkswagen's 261-mpg hand-built XL1 headed for Geneva
Thu, 21 Feb 2013After years of rumors, development and testing, the Volkswagen XL1 is finally about to become a reality. The project that began life as a daring 1-Liter concept car in 2002, will finally get its production-ready curtain call at the Geneva Motor Show in just a few weeks.
As soon as it hits the streets, the two-seat XL1 will instantly become the most fuel-efficient and most aerodynamic production car in the world. The car uses a plug-in hybrid system to achieve mind-blowing consumption of just 0.9 liters of diesel fuel consumed every 100 kilometers (and average of roughly 261 miles per gallon). Plus, the XL1 can go up to 50 kilometers on its battery power alone. Coefficient of drag is a miniscule 0.189, thanks to a tiny frontal area and an obviously slippery shape.
XL1 power comes from a two-cylinder diesel motor connected to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, while the 20 kW electric motor is fed by a lithium-ion battery. Both combine to give the XL1 performance figures that are, while not stirring, not shabby considering its extreme frugality: 0-62 miles per hour comes up in 12.7 seconds and top speed is nearly 146 mph.
Touring the Volkswagen Museum in Wolfsburg
Mon, 23 Sep 2013Forgive the ribbon up top - this isn't so much of a Read This as a Look At This. Ran When Parked took a tour of the sprawling Volkswagen Museum in Wolfsburg, and while there's a spot of text about the different and unique vehicles on display in the rotating exhibits, it's largely the collection of pictures of odd, one-off VW-badged cars and vans that excites. If you're a fan of the weird and wild, this is a post you'll want to look at.
As RWP points out, this is the larger, but less busy, museum targeted purely at Volkswagen products. The smaller AutoStadt museum, meanwhile, covers a much broader swath, with products from other Volkswagen Group members. 2015 VW Golf R caught getting a flogging on 'Ring
Wed, 22 May 2013The upcoming version of the Volkswagen Golf R is nearly ready for prime time, if this video of the car flying around the Nürburgring is any indication. The all-wheel-drive R seems to make quick, neat work of the corners we see here, and sounds pretty devilish in the process.
Expectations are that the new Golf R will run a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder (what else?), tuned to produce even more than the current car's 256 horsepower. (Some sources have indicated outputs as high as 286 horsepower, with 280 pound-feet of torque. It's still not clear if Volkswagen will bring the six-speed dual-clutch transmission to the US-spec Golf R in this next go-round or if we'll stick to having only... eh... the stick.
In either case - watching the video below will only whet your appetite for the new, highest performing member of the Golf family.
