1985 Volkswagen Vanagon Weekender Westfalia on 2040-cars
Oakland, California, United States
"Muddy Waters" is looking for a good home!
She is a 1985 Westfalia Weekender with a fold-up table (instead of the kitchen/fridge), a backseat that pulls out into a full bed, great storage, pop-top with 2nd bed upstairs, plush front seats, and tinted windows! We bought her about two years ago and then put in about $8k of work to rebuild the engine (at Buslab in Berkeley), as well as replaced the windshield and the steering. The car drives perfectly now. We frequently take her for long trips with no issues, as well as use her for errands around town or just day-to-day commuting. The odometer stopped working a long time ago, maybe in the 90's, so we're not sure how many miles she has, but we guess its around 150k. Since we rebuilt much of the engine we've probably put around 5k more miles on. There is definitely wear & tear on the body and many parts inside -- some dents, cracked dashboard, etc. There is a small rip in the canvas of the pop-top. But in general the car is in great shape, it's mostly cosmetic, the core is really healthy. The tires were new-ish when we got the car but need to be replaced soon. We love this car and camp with it frequently all over Northern California. We are only selling her because we're moving -- so we're hoping to find a good home with folks who appreciate the Westy Magic. Let us know if you'd like to come take a look! |

Lamborghini and Bentley may hold off on SUVs so VW can conserve cash
Thu, 11 Oct 2012After surveying the European economic scene, Volkswagen may have decided now is not the time to launch utility vehicles with Bentley and Lamborghini badges. Bentley officials say they will continue to push for support for the EXP 9 F and Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelman has said planning for the Urus will continue until VW tells it to stop.
That decision could come on November 23, when VW's board will vote on the company's budget for equipment, factories and vehicles. With VW's sales slowing and the Euro economy slumping further, some industry watchers say the company is more likely to build its cash reserves than to introduce super-expensive luxury SUVs or crossovers.
"Such vehicles are anything but obligatory during a crisis," says Frankfurt-based Equinet AG analyst Tim Schuldt in a new Automotive News Europe story. "Delaying their launch would be no drama but help save costs."
Volkswagen Golf R wagon promises to be fast and functional [w/poll]
Tue, 25 Mar 2014Volkswagen's array of performance-oriented Golfs keeps getting bigger and bigger. What started with the GTI has since grown to include the diesel GTD, the hybrid GTE and the most powerful Golf R. But the additions haven't all come down to powertain. There's been cabrio versions of the GTI and Golf R as well, but before all is said and done, there will be one more bodystyle to join the lineup.
That, according to these latest spy shots, would be the Golf R Variant. For those unfamiliar, Variant is what Volkswagen calls the wagon version of the Golf (in some markets, anyway). It offers the Golf Variant with a variety of engines, but as the spy shots reveal, it is now working on bringing the Golf Variant and the Golf R together into one high-powered, long-roofed model.
The VW Golf R Variant would in all likelihood pack the same 2.0-liter turbo four as the hatchback, splitting 290 horsepower between all four wheels. Only in the wagon, it would offer that extra bit of utility. Of course there's no guarantee that Volkswagen would offer the Golf R Variant in the North American market, but considering that the Golf R hatchback will soon be joined in American showrooms by the Golf SpotWagen (as it's tipped to be called here) in place for the Jetta wagon, the possibility is definitely there.
VW Golf Sportsvan succeeds Golf Plus in Frankfurt
Sun, 08 Sep 2013
Just ahead of this week's Frankfurt Motor Show, Volkswagen has announced the world premiere of its Golf Sportsvan, a near-production concept that succeeds its Golf Plus. VW describes this compact family car as "one of the most versatile vehicles of the compact class," noting that it offers a mix of hatchback and minivan features in a sporty package.
That sportiness comes from the Sportsvan's styling (perhaps more sleek wagon than minivan) and performance features it shares with the Golf GTI - including the XDS+ electronic differential lock, which is integrated into the Electronic Stability Control system to improve agility. At the same time, the Sportsvan's six engine options, which include a turbodiesel, are up to 19-percent more fuel-efficient than their predecessors.
