The car has always been garaged during my ownership.   It has performed perfectly; the only visit to a shop was for a minor factory recall for the water pump.  Tires are General Altimax, with about 75% of tread remaining.  The car is equipped with leather, AM-FM radio with 6-CD changer, backup camera, Bluetooth, and NAV.  Most features can be controlled either by voice or by way of buttons on the steering wheel.  I have all manuals, the cargo mat, retractable cargo cover, and rubber floor mats.  I have only ONE key.  (I bought a spare key fob but have never taken it to a dealer to be programmed to the car. That spare key is included).

I purchased this Prius 3 1/2 years ago from a shop in Charlotte NC that repairs "salvage" cars exclusively. The North Carolina title, which is clear and in my name, says "Salvage Rebuilt" in the "title brands" box.  The car was nearly new when involved in a front-end collision and the insurance company chose to write it off.  The front fenders, hood,  bumper, and radiator mounts were replaced with parts from another Prius that had been struck in the rear. North Carolina inspects cars regularly during this process, and acquiring the original title was not a problem.  If you examine the photos carefully, you will see that there also is a slight misalignment of both front fenders where they meet the bumper cover.  (In cold weather they stay in place, but in summer they pop out about a quarter inch.)  A local body shop estimated less than $100 to repair this imperfection, but I see no reason to do so. A "salvage" title means two things: the manufacturers warranty is void and the car has been damaged with repairs costing over $2500..

The paint has the minor scratches and a couple of rock chips on the front that would be expected on a 4 1/2 year old car. The "outside temperature" monitor is not working.  There is a small bleach spot on the rear cargo mat.  For it's age, I would say that this car is in excellent condition, and with only 40,000 miles it has many years of service remaining.  The odometer reading will increase slightly, as the car is being used locally.

This Prius is an excellent buy and I feel sure that it will serve someone well for many years.  It would sell for thousands of dollars more without the salvage title.  Mileage consistently averages over 51 MPG even in the mountains.  We are selling because we have too many cars for a 70 year old couple!  If you want to talk about the car, email your phone number to me.

How the demise of Lincoln's Town Car has kick-started a limo revolution

Sun, 30 Dec 2012

The deaths of the Ford Crown Victoria and the Lincoln Town Car have meant overhauls of three high-profile American fleets: police, taxi and livery car. Just as police fleets are more open to considering other options and a Nissan van is the new face of the NYC taxi, livery car companies are looking at replacements for the Town Car beyond The Blue Oval. Ford, via Lincoln, has made an MKT Town Car (pictured), but an article in the Detroit News claims "it has failed to win over most of the big limousine companies." The upstarts trying to move in include livery and limo editions of the Cadillac XTS, and livery specifications of the Toyota Avalon and Chrysler 300.
Each of those challengers, however, faces challenges. The Town Car was a workhorse, American, rear-wheel-drive sedan with plenty of rear legroom. Cadillac has been in the livery space before but with decontented models that were about selling the brand, not its luxury. It is taking the opposite approach with the XTS, pointing out that its livery edition is "contented in the upper half of the XTS range." Still, the CEO of Michigan's largest livery company says "it's quite a bit smaller than what we're used to," and he also prefers rear-wheel drive.
The Chrysler 300 is rear-wheel drive, and American, which matters to some companies, but Chrysler hasn't yet revealed the livery package for it. The livery Avalon marks Toyota's first time getting into that business in the US, a natural step after having done so well with taxi clients and with the Town Car out of the way. Still, the livery client is a different to taxi buyers, so the Avalon could face other soft-touch hurdles.

Consumer Reports says Toyota, Ford, Honda and Chevy are big winners in brand perception survey

Wed, 05 Feb 2014

According to Consumer Reports, the automotive brands that stand out in the minds of car buyers are, in order: Toyota, Ford, Honda and Chevrolet. This news comes after the magazine polled its readers, asking them to take into account vehicle quality, safety, performance, value, fuel economy, design/style, and technology/innovation - which are the factors that car shoppers are most influenced by.
It's important to note that this award is only about perception. In other words, it's perceived quality, not actual quality. "Often, perception can be a trailing indicator, reflecting years of good or bad performance in a category, and it can also be influenced by headlines in the media," said Jeff Bartlett, Consumer Reports deputy automotive editor.
The brand that made the biggest jump in perception amongst Consumer Reports readers is Tesla, which posted an impressive 47-point gain to finish in fifth place. Subaru is also notable for finishing in the top 10, despite being one of the smaller manufacturers doing business in the US. Scroll down below for all the details from Consumer Reports, if you're so inclined.

Ever wonder how to really pronounce Japanese automaker names?

Thu, 25 Sep 2014

People tend to get very set in their ways when it comes to the pronunciation of words. Just look at the endless debates over whether or not to say the final 'e' in Porsche (which you should in terms of correct German enunciation). Or the argument about whether to follow the British convention and give the 'u' in Jaguar a special delivery or to say the 'ua' diphthong as more of a 'w' sound, as usually happens in the US.
This short video doesn't answer either of those automotive questions, but it does allow a native Japanese speaker to demonstrate the accepted pronunciations for several, major automakers from the country. One benefit is that it clears up the occasional debate over whether Nissan should be said with a long or short 'i' sound. Also, listen closely to how the female host says Mazda as Matsuda, the way it's actually said in the language. Even if this doesn't change the way you enunciate these brands, at least now you know the accurate way in Japanese.
