I have for sale a bone-stock, unadulterated 1991 Toyota MR2 Turbo with 84k original miles on it. It's fully loaded e.g. 5-speed, Turbo, T-tops w/original t-top bags, Black leather interior, power windows, power locks, power mirrors, power windows, original AM/FM Radio with CD/Cassette, A/C, front and rear spoiler along with other standard equipment.
Unlike most other MR2's with leather interior, there are NO rips or tears in either seat and the tops do not leak. The car was originally from Canada so the speedometer is in Kilometers. (there's still the "Candian Yacht Club" sticker in the window from the previous owner). The original owner then moved to Florida where he traded it in at a dealership. I bought it from a Car Auction in Tampa, FL in November of 2007. I bought a one-way ticket to Tampa, paid $8000 cash for the car and drove it back to New York. It had 64,527 miles on it when I picked it up (103,846 km's) Since then, it's been garage kept and NEVER driven in snow and RARELY in wet weather . . only if I got caught in the rain while already out. In the 7 1/2 years that I've had it, I've only put 20,000 miles on it averaging not even 3000 miles each year. Mechanically, besides Oil Changes, I had to replace the igniter about a year after I got it, I had the cooling system flushed, the front left caliper was stuck at one point and one of the front fog lights needed a new bulb. I also put some Yokohoma AVS ES100's about 15,000 miles ago. .the fronts still look okay, the rears are about done. Other than that, it's been maintenance free and an awesome ride considering it's going on 25 years old and entering official "antique car" mileage. The car starts right up and you can feel the power surge when the turbo kicks in. I always meant to "completely restore" the car e.g. new shocks, bushings, paint, re-finish the engine, etc., etc. but driving it was fun enough and I never really had the time to do it right and doubt I will any time in the near future :-( The car is in beautiful shape save for the expected nicks and pebble spots on the front and natural slight fading of the paint which is original as far as I can tell. There is 1 RUST area on the lower quarter-panel on the passenger side at the base of the rear wheel well. . .apparently dirt/mud collected there and caused the oxidation. That's the only rust spot on the car. . .front trunk is spotless as is the rear trunk as well as everywhere else. Interior is also beautiful. 2 spots on the interior are a cracked ash tray lid and a scratch on the glove compartment door. I hate to part with this car. . .it was really hard to find an MR2 Turbo that hadn't been messed with in any way and still had relatively low mileage ~ I kept looking on Ebay on and off for about 2 years and came across this one. . I actually set my bid as high as $10,000 and was surprised it went for only $8000. These cars are getting more and more rare as time goes by ~ I don't need to tell anyone who knows MR2's. . .if you're unfamiliar with the production and value of MR2's then you're most likely not looking at this auction. I realize there are no good pictures of the interior or engine compartment or trunk. Can't find them on my computer right now. . will take some and get them up here in the next few days. Toyota wants improved crash scores with midcycle facelifts
Thu, 29 Aug 2013The performances of some Toyotas in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's (IIHS) regimen of crash tests leave something to be desired. Consider the small overlap frontal crash test: only six Toyota, Lexus and Scion vehicles have undergone the new test, yet all but one of them received a poor rating. Osama Nagata, CEO of Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America Inc., says midcycle vehicle updates are in the works to address the safety issues brought to light by the IIHS test, Automotive News reports. He confirmed that the RAV4 is getting safety updates following its crash test performance last month, but he didn't name any other models.
All three Toyotas that were tested - 2013 RAV4, 2012-2013 Prius V, 2012-2013 Camry - received poor ratings. The 2007-2012 Lexus ES 350 and 2006-2013 IS 250/350 also received poor ratings. The only other Toyota Motor Corp. vehicle to score better than poor is the 2014 Scion TC. It received an acceptable rating in the small overlap frontal crash test and is the only recent vehicle in Toyota's line-up to get the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating.
The small overlap front crash test measures the safety of a car when its front left corner is strikes an object during an accident, bypassing traditional crumple zones, which deform in a way to protect passengers. In 2009, automakers were alerted to the forthcoming addition of the test, which was first implemented last year, IIHS spokesman Russ Rader says. They responded with differing intensity, he says, pointing out that Subaru and Honda started incorporating design changes early on so their cars would perform well in the tests.
European car sales up 8% in February
Sat, 22 Mar 2014Three weeks ago an analyst increased projections for European car sales this year, expecting them to climb three percent compared to last year instead of 2.7 percent. That number is a postive sign after years of hard times but it turns out February was especially good, overall European sales climbing eight percent on a wave of southern European recovery and discounts - and this comes after five months of gains including January's 7.2-percent jump over the year before.
The only country of Europe's five largest markets to post a decline was France, just as it did in January, Germany, the UK and Italy posting solid double-digit numbers, Spain rocking the charts with an 18-percent increase because of a government program to encourage trade-ins.
The only brand to miss the wave was Volkswagen, dropping 0.8 percent as it watched the double-digit growth at sister brands Audi, Seat and Skoda lift the Volkswagen Group sales up by seven-percent. Peugeot overcame flat sales at Citroën to improve the group by 3.5 percent, BMW and the Mercedes-Benz/Smart combo rose by four percent, the Fiat group jumped 5.8 percent, Ford was up 11 percent, the Renault Group 11.5 percent, General Motors 12 percent and the Toyota clan by 14 percent.
2014 Toyota Corolla to bow before LA
Sat, 30 Mar 2013We've sort of been wondering when Toyota would finally debut the next-generation Corolla sedan, especially since the current car is getting very, very long in the tooth. We got a glimpse of the new compact's design at this year's Detroit Auto Show in the form of the Furia concept seen above, but we figured we'd see the production car by now.
According to Edmunds, Toyota will be unveiling the new Corolla sometime soon, and it won't wait until the Los Angeles Auto Show in November. Officials from the Japanese automaker did not state a specific location or date for the new car's unveiling, but said that the 2014 Corolla is expected to be on sale before the LA expo later this year and that it will be revealed "somewhere in the US."
Toyota did not divulge any details about the new Corolla, and we're willing to bet that the aggressive lines of the Furia concept will be dulled down quite a bit for the production model. Still, news that the new car is coming sooner rather than later is indeed a good thing.
