A Little Land Cruiser History - 1978 was a great year for the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40. By 1978 you had the ambulance doors in the rear that replaced the old "head banging" liftgate & tailgate, larger square front turn signals with side markers. The wipers were moved to bottom of windshield. 4:11 gearing provided excellent off road performance. Front disk brakes, tubular spare tire mount and pop-out rear windows gave passengers in back some fresh air. (End of History lesson)

Details & Condition

Here's an beautiful 1978 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 with 73200 miles, power steering and air conditioning that has been well cared for over the decades. The truck has just emerged from several months of restoration work and is ready to be enjoyed. You will NOT find diamond plate, fender flares, 8-track tape decks, CB antenna holes, bed lining, jerry cans, roof racks, a V8 or other modifications. This gal has survived over three decades while remaining essentially stock.

She features power steering & air conditioning, original 2F engine and drive-train and one owner since 2001. The truck was initially restored in the 1990’s by Cool Cruisers of Texas. I re-restored her over the past several months with many new parts including rear quarter panels, front fenders, real sill and much more. I have a number of photos of the truck during the restoration.

The truck is beautiful & rust free and was repainted in 309, Freeborn Red by my team at Custom Finish Auto. She sports a barley used Warn 9000lb. winch, surrounded by one BIG BAD front bumper that was a Cool Cruisers trademark on all their restorations of the era. The truck has a mild HFS lift and new BFG 33x10.50 BFG All Terrain tires surrounding freshly blasted and painted stock wheels and hubcaps. You will find the "original" Dunlop Snow Cruisers spare still hanging on the back tire carrier.

Mechanicals

There's very little evidence that this vehicle is 36 years of age but any owner would be proud of her. She runs and drives great. The truck's original 4-speed manual transmission serves up legendary off-roading prowess. The front disc and rear drum brake combination provide responsive braking. The original 2F inline six cylinder purrs quietly and the steering, clutch and 4-Wheel Drive transmission are all in good working order as they should be for a vehicle with 73,200 miles. The truck has power steering which makes it effortless to drive. The battery is fresh, the original carburetor has been swapped with a Weber by veteran FJ40 mechanics at Hadley Industries.

Inside and Out

The interior if this FJ40 is pristine! Inside you will find all the original seats covered in new, factory correct vinyl. The interior door panels, mats, dashpad and headliner are in perfect condition. Between the seats you will find the original console. All turn signals, lights, wipers, taillights, backup lights, license plate lights, side markers and all gauges operate as they should. Body and undercarriage are excellent. The rust free floors are covered with a CCOT carpet Kit. Upgrades include a Sony AM/FM/CD with 6x9 speakers secured in gray carpeted boxes in back. The clear stock gauges and controls all work well and for extra added comfort, you'll stay nice and cool on hot summer days with air conditioning designed by Cool Cruisers.

Summary

This is a beautiful unmolested FJ40 in her factory-original configuration that you can drive everyday and like all nice FJ40's, will attract a following of admiring fans! Quality vintage Land Cruisers like this represent a very FUN and lucrative investment. If you follow the market, you know they have been appreciating wildly over the past few years. This FJ40 includes the owners manual, winch control, toolkit, jack & jack rods. High bidder is responsible for pick up or delivery, I will assist in any way I can. Toyota brings TRD Griffon GT86 to Goodwood [w/video]

Fri, 12 Jul 2013

In the midst of the 2013 Goodwood Festival of Speed, there's a particularly special Toyota running up the hill. This special entry is a GT86 (the cousin to our Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ) that's been poked, prodded, and tweaked by the minds at Toyota Racing Development. The result of TRD's fettling is a nearly race-ready car.
Starting with the body, the hood, doors, trunk lid, and wings are all made of carbon fiber. The lightweight treatment doesn't end there, though. The bumpers, fenders, and diffuser all feature carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic, while the windows are now made of polycarbonate plastic.
Under the hood sits the same 2.0-liter boxer engine found in the standard GT86, but its six-speed manual gearbox features a shorter final drive ratio for improved acceleration. The coilover suspension has been firmed up, and a TRD mechanical limited-slip differential replaces the Torsen unit. The TRD Griffon rides on TWS 18-inch wheels and Yokohama Advan tires. To bring proceedings to a stop, TRD has fitted its own mono-block caliper kit, complete with more robust racing pads.

At least 15 states jockeying for Toyota and Mazda factory jobs

Fri, Aug 18 2017

Just a few weeks ago, Mazda and Toyota announced a partnership that would lead to an all-new $1.6 billion plant here in the United States. The plant will build EVs and is expected to employ roughly 4,000 people directly while creating thousands of indirect jobs through suppliers, shipping and more. The Detroit Free Press reports that as many as 15 Midwestern and Southern states are understandably interested in striking a deal with the automakers. Most of the states already have ties to the auto industry. While the Midwest has traditionally been home to auto manufacturing in the United States, in the past 25 years or so, the South has made a big push, offering tax incentives and a union-free workforce. Alabama alone is home to facilities from Honda, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz and Toyota. Others house a burgeoning tech or manufacturing industry ripe for the picking. Freep breaks down the pros and cons for each state, with much of the focus being on supply chains and a reliable and plentiful workforce. The latter is of particular concern in states like Alabama and Michigan that already have a big auto industry. Toyota may feel those areas have already been tapped for talent. Most of the states are along or adjacent to Interstate 75 and its extended roots, so others like Texas and Iowa will have to fight hard if they want this facility. It's only been a few weeks, though. With manufacturing jobs in such great demand and elected officials eager to show they're seeking them for their states, it wouldn't be surprising if a few more joined the fray. More head-up displays are coming to a dashboard near you

Tue, Feb 27 2018

With the exception of Apple products — $1,000 for a freakin' smartphone? — one great thing about tech is you typically get more for your money with each passing year. This is particularly true with automotive tech: Features like driver assists and surround-view cameras that were once exclusively available in luxury vehicles now come standard even on some economy cars. The same thing is slowly happening with head-up displays (HUD). For example, the 10-inch HUD in the 2018 Toyota Camry is one of the largest and best HUDs I've seen in any car. And a big improvement on the much smaller HUD in the latest Toyota Prius. Mazda is another mainstream brand that offers HUDs in several of its vehicles. But instead of embedding expensive components in the dash and using a special windshield, the HUDs in the Mazda3 and Mazda6 use a thin plastic lens that folds down when not in use. MINI has a similar solution, but this low-cost approach has limits in terms of size and position of the images compared to traditional HUDs that use the windshield as a screen. We're also starting to see similar lens-based aftermarket options that can be added to any car. Last year I tested a portable HUD called Navdy that taps into a car's OBD-II port to provide info on speed and RPM and uses built-in GPS and Google Maps to show the surrounding area, display speed limits and route you to your destination. Navdy also connects to an Android or iOS smartphone via Bluetooth to display data from phone calls, texts and music playing on a connected device, and it's simple to use and easily visible in almost any lighting condition. While Navdy is still available online, late last year the company ran into financial difficulties, and product support has been halted. I recently tested a new portable HUD called Hudly that's not quite fully baked and falls short of Navdy because it doesn't tap into an OBD-II port. Since a companion smartphone app for Hudly isn't scheduled to launch until next month, for now it only mirrors what's on a smartphone. So it can be used for nav and other apps, and its features are very limited. Between automakers adding HUDs in more reasonably priced cars and the aftermarket filling in the gaps for existing vehicle owners with add-ons, the technology is becoming more prevalent and affordable. And it's also getting better.
