Momkhana goes drifting with a V8 minivan in the 'burbs

Thu, Feb 19 2015

Ken Block probably never expected that he would launch countless imitators when he released Gymkhana years ago, but by now we've seen the concept broadened for everything from toy cars to Crazy Carts. The latest parody is Momkhana, and it moves the setting to the suburbs for a trip to the shoe store. Before you completely write off the idea, though, keep in mind the vehicle making the commute is a drift-happy, rear-wheel drive Toyota Sienna boasting an LS3 V8 with an estimated 550 horsepower. The significant increase in muscle certainly makes a drive to the strip mall a lot more entertaining. In addition to the engine transplant, the minivan gets a massive handbrake to allow for big slides through the neighborhood. The clip replicates many of the classic stunts from Block's Gymkhana videos but in new, rather absurd surroundings. So instead of long, smoky donuts in a warehouse, they happen at the end of a cul-de-sac. If you're curious to see how the video was done, Famous Footwear, which created the clip, also made a featurette showing off some of the van's preparation and filming behind the scenes. PSA: Toyota wants to save your life, needs an hour of your time

Thu, Nov 9 2017

Toyota wrote Autoblog to ask if we could spread the word about the Takata airbag inflator recall. Defective inflators remain installed in tens of millions of cars made by 19 carmakers, with manufacture dates that go back to the year 2000. Each inflator compounds the risk of serious injury or death in an airbag-activating crash. With a new ad campaign called "in about an hour," Toyota wants to make sure that unaware owners, or overly busy owners, know they can get their Toyota, Lexus, and Scion vehicles repaired free of charge in about the time it takes to do a load of laundry. The campaign focuses on cities in three so-called Zone A states where hot, humid climates worsen the threat of the ruptured inflators: Los Angeles, Dallas, and Miami. However, every owner everywhere who cares about his life, or his child's life, should at least check to see if his car is affected. All it takes is a quick VIN entry at the dedicated recall site at Toyota.com/Recall. The results will let you know if your car is affected and, if so, locate a local dealer for the free fix. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration said the Takata affair has become "the largest and most complex safety recall in U.S. history." The numbers so far suggest the recall covers more than 42 million vehicles and more than 60 million airbags. Autoweek keeps an updated list of Takata information, including every make and model on the recall list. Consumer Reports published a list of frequently asked questions covering issues directly related and tangential to the recall. The 19 automakers maintain pages dedicated to the issue; Fiat Chrysler lists every relevant model and how it prioritizes repairs by Zone, Honda says it offers a free rental car while owner cars are repaired, Daimler vans says its fix only takes about an hour. And of course NHTSA serves all owners with its own VIN lookup site. We encourage you to check your vehicle — the life you save could be your own. Related Video:

Autocar pits McLaren MP4-12C against turbo Toyota GT86

Thu, 29 Aug 2013

The Toyota GT86, in all of its forms, is one of the best-handling cars money can buy, a trait that can put a smile on the faces of all but the most jaded car enthusiasts. But if good handling isn't what they're looking for, then what is? Our first guess would have to be more power, something the 200-horsepower Toyota would benefit from. Autocar tries out that theory by driving two turbocharged GT86s on track, then pitting the more powerful one against the 616-hp McLaren MP4-12C in a track battle.
The first GT86 turbo Autocar's Steve Sutcliffe drives makes around 255 rear-wheel horsepower and a bucket-load more torque than the stock car. That's plenty of power to either have a lot of fun or get into a lot of trouble. But the GT86 that Sutcliffe tails in the McLaren is race-prepped, stripped to the bone and wears slicks to harness a heavy-hitting 335 hp at the wheel. Weighing in at under 2,500 pounds, the Toyota can't overcome the MP4-12C's power-to-weight ratio of 5.3 pounds per horsepower, but it comes pretty close.
Enjoy a lot of chasing and drifting fun in the video below!
