Toyota's hydrogen fuel cell Mirai isn't good enough to be a Lexus
Thu, Nov 17 2016It looks like the first hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle from Lexus will be faster than previously advertised, but it will get to the market slower than expected. It's all part of the paradox involved with Toyota looking to broaden its fuel-cell technology beyond the Mirai. Either way, the first Lexus fuel-cell vehicle is slated to start sales by the end of the decade, said Auto Express, citing comments from Alain Uyttenhoven, head of Lexus Europe. Uyttenhoven noted that it'd take an SUV to provide enough space to accommodate the packaging for the Lexus fuel cell powertrain. That comment may imply that the hydrogen-fueled powertrain from Lexus will offer similar performance to that of the Lexus RX450h hybrid SUV. That model delivers 300 horsepower and boasts a 0 to 60 mile-per-hour time of about seven seconds. Such a mill would be a departure from what we'd previously reported on Toyota's plans to expand its fuel-cell technology to its Lexus luxury badge. With Toyota believed to be planning to unveil as many as three fuel-cell models in time for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, the Japanese automaker said early last year that it may have a Lexus fuel-cell vehicle available as soon as 2017, while reports suggesting the model would be a Lexus LS-based sedan. Additionally, the Mirai's fuel-cell powertrain had been believed to be the platform for the proposed Lexus fuel cell from the moment that model started sales in California last year. Apparently, though, the Mirai's 152-horsepower powertrain, coupled with a full-tank range that would be about 20 percent less than the 300-mile Mirai, isn't up to snuff for Lexus duty. Toyota outpaces Detroit rivals in profitability per vehicle
Tue, Feb 24 2015As the world's highest volume automaker in 2014, you would probably expect Toyota to project a healthy financial outlook for the end of its fiscal year on March 31. But thanks in large part to the weak value of the yen and a large number of export vehicles, the automaker could make about four times more than General Motors, despite selling just a few hundred thousand more cars than its Detroit competitor last year. Toyota forecasts the equivalent of $24.5 billion in earnings for the fiscal year, compared to $6.5 billion from GM in 2014. According to an analysis by The Detroit News, the Japanese automaker is expecting average earnings of $2,726 on each vehicle it sells, versus $994 from Ford and $654 from GM. The key to this massive success has less to do with Toyota's products and much more in the company's location. The yen's value to the dollar is at its lowest point in decades. Also, according to The News, the automaker exports about 45 percent of its Japan-assembled vehicles, meaning bigger profits in the conversion to foreign currencies. Coupled with strong demand in the US, and the business looks even better. Automakers in the US are peeved by Toyota's currency-based boost. According to The News, there are allegations of manipulation of the yen's value, and Ford president of the Americas Joe Hinrichs calls the problem the "major trade barrier of the 21st century." He thinks the Japanese companies are making about $2,000 per exported vehicle due to the conversion. Intriguingly, it wasn't that long ago when Japanese automakers were moving operations from the country due to the strong value of the yen to the dollar curtailing profits. Infiniti shifted production, and there were fears that Toyota might close some of its factories, as well. Japanese police raid Toyota HQ following Hamp arrest
Tue, Jun 23 2015Less than a week after Toyota's new global communications officer and first female senior executive, Julie Hamp, was arrested for allegedly bringing illegal painkillers into Japan, local police have raided the company's headquarters, Japan's Asahi newspaper claims. Details are remarkably scarce at this stage, and it's entirely unclear what police were looking to find at Toyota HQ. According to Reuters, Toyota has been completely quiet on the subject of the raid. It seems logical that police would execute a search on Hamp's office in a bid to find any additional illegal medication, but that is, of course, pure speculation. Hamp has been in headlines since June 18, when Tokyo police arrested her at her hotel. Allegedly, 57 pills of Oxycodone, a powerful, highly addictive, and easily abused painkiller, was sent to Hamp from the US. And while it may have been obtained here in the States with a legal prescription, that doesn't change the fact that it, along with some over-the-counter medications, remain illegal under Japanese law. The embattled exec has had some big-name support since her arrest, though. Akio Toyoda, the head of Toyota Motor Corporation, stepped out on Sunday and said, "We are confident...that once the investigation is complete, it will be revealed there was no intention on Julie's part to violate any law." Thus far Hamp has claimed ignorance, although that might not protect her from what one expert told Reuters could result in years in prison. Should any additional information become available, we'll be sure to update this post. News Source: ReutersImage Credit: Mark Renders / Getty Images Government/Legal Toyota julie hamp
