Vehicle Description We are pleased to introduce here a 1977 fully restored Rolls Royce Silver Shadow II, in Old Ivory. Interior is a striking House of Lords Red with white piping detail. Only 80,200 miles. This elegant and classic beauty has been superbly maintained and restored. This vehicle was previously represented by Park-Ward Motors Museum where every repair and service was completed by professional Rolls Royce craftsmen. Every aspect of this vehicle has been meticulously refined, with a total engine over-haul. The Connolly leather interior has been re-Connollised and hand finished. The burl walnut wood finish has been restored, with over 25 coats of hand-rubbed clear laquer. All of the stainless has been removed, polished, and reassembled. Mechanically, every seal and gasket has been changed, making this a rare and leak free Rolls Royce. Any and all parts that were replaced were done so without modification, including reservoir, pumps, accumulators, and hoses. All maintenance, repairs, and service are completed and up to date. The driving experience in this elegant classic is superb. There is exceptional space and legroom in both the front and rear seating. The self-levelling suspension and rack and pinion steering make as smooth of a drive as one could wish for. This car glides effortlessly and whispers of sophistication. Every component operates at full function, from power windows and locks to all gauges, instruments, and interior dome lights. The A/C and Heater run as new. All components are OEM Rolls Royce standard. The only non-factory modifications are instillation of heated seats as well as a Pioneer Stereo/CD player. The original stereo is still intact, merely disconnected. The interior of this Silver Shadow has been extraordinarily maintained - absolutely no cracking on the dash, burl walnut wood finish is flawless, and the headliner is absolute perfection. The rich and luxurious leather and carpeting in House of Lords Red (Burgundy) was expertly maintained and re-finished, and only shows minor leather aging in a few small areas. Rear parcel shelf is in pristine condition. The finishing touch is a full set of new white-wall tires. A leisurely drive down the Boulevard in this treasure fuels a nostalgia for an era long past, both regal and charming. This Rolls Royce classic Silver Shadow II truly is a royal beauty, both inside and out. Features unique to the Silver Shadow II: Alloy / Rubber Bumper 6.75L V8 Engine with 3-Speed Automatic Rear-wheel Drive Turbo Hydramatic 400 Transmission Self-levelling Suspension with Rack and Pinion Steering. Living Life Large: Driving $2 million worth of cars in one week
Mon, Aug 24 2015Monterey Car Week has quickly become one of my favorite events of the year. There's something for everyone – classic car shows, modern concepts and new vehicle debuts, auctions, racing, and so much more. From a media perspective, there's also a chance to drive a ton of cars. Many automakers bring their latest wares out to Monterey for us to test during our limited free time, and it's a great opportunity to experience fantastic metal against a gorgeous backdrop. That's exactly what I did this year. Instead of flying into Monterey and being driven around, my journey started in Los Angeles and ended in Napa, and I managed to get behind the wheel of some $2 million worth of new cars. Some were old favorites, and many were new experiences. But looking back, this was one of the best weeks of driving I've had in years. Rather than try to come up with some common arc to tie these cars together, here are my notes on all the cars I tested in California earlier this month, presented in the order in which they were driven. 2016 Mazda CX-3 The CX-3 pictured here isn't the exact one I drove in California, but it's close. The only difference was color – my delivered-to-LAX tester wore Mazda's awesome new Ceramic hue (pictured below on the MX-5 Miata). I used the CX-3 to slum through crummy Los Angeles traffic for two hours on the way out to Santa Barbara, with a quick stop at In-N-Out Burger on the way for good measure. A lot nicer inside than I remember. Everyone praises Mazda for its excellence in engineering and design, but there's a lot to be said for the improvements in overall interior refinement. Quiet, comfortable, and well-equipped; the CX-3 made sitting on the 405 freeway a lot more pleasant. Not all that functional. I had a hard time fitting a week's worth of luggage for two people inside. The cargo area and rear passenger compartment were filled, with only enough room on top to see out the back window. A Honda HR-V would've swallowed all that luggage with plenty of room for more. So good to drive. Not surprising, since this wasn't my first time in the CX-3. I knew this CUV would be good on twisty roads, but on the highway it's really exceptional. Road and wind noise are minimal and the overall ride quality is a comfortable sort of sporty. This is definitely something I could drive every day – it's enjoyable during commuting and entertaining on more interesting roads.
On this Rolls Ghost, diamonds are forever in the paint
Mon, Mar 6 2017Diamonds, the hardest rocks in the world, are found in everything from jewelry to tools – and now automotive paint. Rolls-Royce, a company happy to help paying customers indulge in one-of-a-kind, specially customized cars, has produced a long-wheelbase Ghost with a paint job featuring 1,000 crushed diamonds. It's called "Elegance," which seems like a pretty fitting name. One thing is for sure, the paint is dazzling in these photos. So the two months Rolls-Royce spent testing diamond paint finishes seem to have paid off. The rest of the car is a bit more run-of-the-mill Rolls-Royce, which is to say still pretty custom. It has hand-painted coachlines in red and black along the flanks, and the 21-inch wheels have matching red pinstripes. The color scheme is continued inside. Up front, everything is black, from the leather seats to the wool carpets. The sea of black is punctuated by red stitching and piping on the seats, as well as open-pore oak wood trim on the dash. In the back, the seats are a lighter gray leather with the same red stitching and piping. Our favorite part, though, is the plaid upholstery that lines the space in the front seats into which the rear tray tables fold. The car will be on display at the Geneva Motor Show alongside a few other older Rolls-Royce Bespoke models. Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party. Top horsepower-per-dollar cars in 2017
Tue, Feb 17 2015Bang for the buck. That quasi-scientific statistic is bandied about by motor heads everywhere from classrooms to barrooms, though the truth of the matter is that it's exceedingly complex to measure. A fair performance-per-dollar index would include something like cross-referencing MSRP (Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price) with point-to-point times on a track or driving route, which is obviously hard to do comprehensively. But, for the sheer joy of talking about cars and playing with a big spreadsheet, there's always the horsepower-per-dollar index, which is more straightforward, albeit hilariously flawed. There are vagaries even with this simple formula, of course: MSRP for vehicles can change at a moment's notice, to say nothing of the bottom-line shifting that happens with local deals or showroom negotiation. For this list we're running with the straight MSRP wherever possible, and as recently reported as we can get it. All the vehicles on this list are 2017 models, and all trims are reported where the lowest price and differing power levels intersect. Some choices were made for personal preference and some for sanity, avoiding things like all 48 trim levels of the Ford Transit, all with the same horsepower). If this list were a simple top ten, or even a top fifty, you'd be bored to tears with all the red, white and blue that is represented. Following perfectly with conventional wisdom, American cars really do lead the world where hp/$ is concerned. So, for the sake of variety (and the sheer joy of seeing a minivan 'win' one round of this thing) I've sorted out some top five and bottom five lists for broad power categories. Let's dive in. Less Than 100 Horsepower Okay, okay, this is hardly a category we'll grant you. But we've often tried to click off all the sub-100-hp cars on sale in the US, and making this list gave us an excuse. It also illustrates that none of these smallish vehicles bring cheap horsepower to the table - for that you'll need a motorcycle. The segment-leading Chevy Spark (above) asks just over $139 for each hp, and that Smart Fortwo Electric Drive has hp on sale for about the same price as its very distant family cousin, the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG (insert your favorite Smart joke here... we know you want to).
