Looking back at Oprah's free-car giveaway 10 years later

Fri, 12 Sep 2014

Oprah kicked off her 19th season in dramatic fashion by giving all 276 members of the studio audience a free car.
Molly Vielweber's Pontiac G6 appears unremarkable at first glance. It wears forest green paint, rolls on five-spoke aluminum wheels, and it has a sizeable scrape in the driver's side door, the scar of a decade's worth of hard use. You wouldn't notice it parked at a big box store or cruising on the highway. Pontiac made hundreds of thousands of G6s in the 2000s, and a lot are still on the road. It's unremarkable in every way except for the front license plate, which reads, "Oprah 6."

Junkyard Gem: 2001 Pontiac Aztek

Tue, Jul 11 2017

Ah, the Pontiac Aztek. Everyone laughs at the Aztek ... except, apparently, for Coloradans who like to go camping, bike riding, hiking, and all that outdoorsy stuff that folks do in the Centennial State. You'll see Azteks being driven, unironically and without shame, all over the place in the Denver region, and now plenty of them are showing up in the local wrecking yards. Here's a first-year-of-production example in its final campground. These minivans or crossovers (or however the experts finally decided to categorize them) had built-in air compressors, audio controls in the rear cargo area, and other features meant to enhance tailgating, camping, and other activities deemed central to Generation X's allegedly active lifestyle. You could even get an optional camping kit with a tent that attached to the rear of the Aztek. So, it was a General Motors minivan-like vehicle, cousin of the weird-looking Dustbusters of the 1990s, with lots of useful features for those who did more than just commute to work and drop off kids at school. Unfortunately for GM, the Aztek was staggeringly ugly, and Generation Xers were too damned broke to buy new cars in 2001, anyway. I see plenty of them in Denver-area wrecking yards now, along with their slightly-less-offensive-looking Buick Rendezvous siblings, and so I decided to document one before they're all gone. Junkyard Gem: 2010 Pontiac G6

Sat, Sep 12 2020

What makes a discarded car a gem? Sometimes it's a car we all agree is very cool, and other times it's a car that tells us something about automotive history. Today's Junkyard Gem is the latter type: one of the very last Pontiacs sold, before The General shut out the lights forever on the storied marque after 84 years. The G6 was Pontiac's Epsilon-platform-based car, sibling to the Chevy Malibu, Saturn Aura, and Saab 9-3 (plus a bunch of Europe-only machinery). The very last Pontiac ever built was a white 2010 G6 sedan like this one (all '10 G6s were sedans, the coupe and convertible having been nixed in 2009), though that car was built in January of 2010 and this one came off the line in July of 2009. They build Bolts at the Orion Assembly plant these days. The higher-zoot G6s came with V6s or even V8s, but this car has "fleet machine" written all over it and has the base 2.4-liter Ecotec four-banger making 164 horsepower. Pontiac shoppers in the United States could buy the Vibe as a 2010 model as well, while Mexican Pontiac dealerships also sold new G2s (known as the Spark here) that year. The G6 was The Final Pontiac, though, bookending a run that began with the 1926 Pontiac Six. This one will go to its grave with the original owner's manual still inside. Even the cheapest 2010 G6s came with an AUX jack for the radio, a feature that was still maddeningly hard to find in rental cars a decade ago. This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Manage Settings. Before the bankruptcy and the gloom, optimism surrounded the G6. DESCRIPTION
As sales began to slip it became clear that Pontiac’s salvation would be to actually build a performance image. They proceeded to do so, and by 1962, the desired results - increased sales - were a reality! Hurst shifters found their way to Pontiacs with floor mounted manual transmissions and larger, more powerful engines nested under the hoods! Leading the effort was Pontiac chief engineer John Z. DeLorean who insisted that performance and styling would sell cars. DeLorean designed the GTO, but Pontiac General Manager Elliot "Pete" Estes is credited with pushing the idea through the politics at GM. Wildly popular upon its introduction, Pontiac created an instant legend with the GTO. To this day, the GTO remains one of the most sought after and collectable cars of all time. The birth of the GTO represents the beginning of the Muscle Car era, a craze that still enjoys tremendous popularity!

Offered for sale here is a superb example of one of GM’s greatest creations, the 1967 GTO H.O. Hardtop! Equipped with its number’s matching 1967 date-coded WS 400ci High-Output 4-bbl V8 producing 360 horsepower, chrome open element air cleaner & valve covers, 1967 date-coded Muncie M20 wide ratio 4-speed manual transmission with Custom wood shift knob, 3.55 Safe-T-Track rear end, factory bucket seats with center console, Rally gauge cluster with in-dash tachometer, original date-coded Pontiac 14” Rally I wheels fitted with new BF Goodrich Silvertown Radial redline tires, power steering, Custom sports steering wheel, all Soft Ray tinted window glass, under hood engine light, rare interior map reading lights, ignition lamps, & trunk luggage lamp, AM radio, front & rear seatbelts, upgraded power front DISC brakes & red inner fender linings, this is without a doubt one of the finest and nicest driving GTOs available anywhere!

Finished in stunning Starlight Black (Originally code GG- Signet Gold) over correct, and largely original Black interior (Code 223), this GTO boasts a fresh body-on restoration just completed in December 2012! The body & frame condition were in excellent shape requiring virtually no rust repair! The restoration included a complete stripping of the body’s exterior trim & bright work before it was professionally prepped, primered, 3-stage block sanded, painted PPG Starlight Black, clear coated, 3-stage wet sanded, and buffed to a brilliant, smooth finish! The engine and transmission remain completely stock and untouched. Factory intake manifold, exhaust manifolds, 670 heads, Delco Remy voltage regulator, Harrison Radiator, tower clamps, and more! The original, date-code correct Rochester 4-barrel was rebuilt along with complete fuel system including gas tank and lines, all new front brake components, coolant & heater hoses, and all new exhaust system! The complete suspension (front spindles, ball joints, tie rod ends, control arm bushings, sway bar links, sway bar bushings, wheel bearings, idler arm, pitman arm, rear sway bar and bushings, all new KYB shocks, etc.), all weather stripping, new chrome bumpers, grill, emblems, headlights bezels fitted around correct T3 headlamps! You’ll find some factory original trim, glass, and interior parts, but nearly all major components are new! Inside, you will find new carpeting, new headliner, and front seat upholstery and foams. All other appointments are said to remain original! A real testament to this car’s care since new!

With a great blend of performance, eye appeal, sound and classic Muscle Car vibe, this bright shining GTO H.O. will be right at home at a major Pontiac show or cruising to your favorite weekend getaway spot. It comes nicely documented with PHS Documentation and original owner’s manual. The astute collector will NOT miss this unique opportunity! It is an essential component to any major collection! Please feel free to call with additional questions or to schedule a chance to review this magnificent car in person!
