He she is: My "midlife crisis" car as my wife calls it. I enjoyed 4 years and way too much money building this car. So here's what it is:

  • Only 2300 hardtop coupes were produced in '79 with 400 Pontiac engine and 4 speed
  • 79 is first year Pontiac with 4 wheel disc brakes. All brakes calipers, pads cables are brand new.
  • Correct year 400ci engine with mild cam, 6X heads, demon carb, longtube ceramic headers
  • Very dependable with MSD ignition, custom mounted and functional hood scoop, remote oil filter
  • Transmission is Borg Warner world class upgraded with stronger gears and thrust washer - all brand new with close ratio Hurst 5 speed
  • That's correct 5 speed w overdrive.
  • Drive shaft is shortened 3.5"
  • Rear end is 10 bolt 3:73 posi with Moser Gears
  • Clutch is actuated by hydraulic cylinder setup from 2005 Vette
  • Almost too much to list - but all is brand new and with less than 4,000 very dependable miles
  • Car was chassis dyno'd at rear wheels with just under 300hp & 355 ft/lbs torque
  • Exhaust and stainless tips are 2.5" with crossover and dual flowmaster - this car sounds incredible
  • This car never had,and does not have any rust - zero - none.
  • All new body bushings, front rear swaybars, shocks - U name it
  • Paint job is perfect. - -thats a big big statement - but this paint is 18 months old and has never had wax
  • Clear coat buffed after paint - thats it. This car does not see rain
  • Some pics may not show all the factory new graphic pics - like trim around wheel wells.
  • AC all rebuilt and blows cold
  • Really just too much to list with the TLC that went into it
  • Driving this car is like being in a parade - everyone seems to stop, look, listen & wave
  • My only gaurantee - is you'll be hard pressed to build a straighter, nicer higher quality car - than what you can buy this for
  • You really need to see & drive to appreciate - The reserve is low - so have fun and email w any questions
  • I have an all steel '34 ford coupe 60% complete and would like to finish that now.
  • My reserve is low - so bid and enjoy for the summer. If you have less than a 98% feedback - don't bother bidding - I will reject it.

Junkyard Gem: 1991 Pontiac 6000 LE

Sat, Dec 2 2017

Sibling to the Chevrolet Celebrity and Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera, the Pontiac 6000 sold pretty well during the early-to-middle 1980s, but had been relegated to the dealership bargain bin and fleet-car cul-de-sac by the time of Operation Desert Shield. Here's a final-year-of-manufacture 6000 LE that I photographed in an Arizona self-service wrecking yard. This car was sold new in Arizona, and it will be crushed in the same state, 26 years later. The LE was the cheapest trim level for the 6000 in 1991, but the original purchaser of this car sprang for a few options. For example, instead of the utterly miserable 2.5-liter Iron Duke four-cylinder, this car packs the 3.1-liter V6. That meant 140 horsepower instead of 110, plus an engine note more like a vacuum cleaner sucking up a spaghetti spill than an ailing blender chewing on walnuts. AM, FM, and cassette. Not only that, but the auto-reverse feature meant that your mixtape cassette wouldn't stop right in the middle of your favorite Roxette tune. This content is hosted by a third party. Even the wretched Daewoo-built Pontiac LeMans gets more screen time than the forgotten 6000 in this 1991 TV ad featuring the voice of Captain Picard. Check out the official 2013 Trans Am Hurst Edition commercial

Sat, 16 Mar 2013

The Poncho is dead. Long live the Poncho. Like certain other reoccurring personal maladies, the aftermarket community simply can't let the Trans Am go without another flare up. The guys at Trans Am Depot have worked up a quick commercial for their newest creation: The 2013 Trans Am Hurst Edition, and it watches pretty much like you'd expect it to. The footage is comprised of just about every TA male fantasy you can conceive of, from Daisy Dukes and white tank tops to tramp stamps, bikinis and ice cream cones. There simply aren't words for what you'll see below.
Of course, we like our T-Tops as much as the next guy. If you like what you see in the videos, you can pick up your very own TA by heading over to the Trans Am Depot site. The guys even have Chevrolet Camaro-based versions of the Pontiac GTO if the '77 TA treatment is too much for your tastes. Enjoy, but don't say we didn't warn you.

Gordon Murray, F1-driven production and .. the Pontiac Fiero

Tue, Oct 31 2017

Gordon Murray's design and engineering chops are unquestionable. But does his carmaking approach owe something to the short-lived Pontiac Fiero, a scrappy little car program that emerged from GM against serious resistance? Murray had a Formula One career that ran from 1969 to 1991, with stints at Brabham ('69 to '86) and McLaren ('87-'91), that resulted in several shelves' worth of trophies for the cars he was instrumental in designing. He moved on to McLaren Cars, the consumer side of things, where, during his tenure from 1991 to 2004, he helped design the McLaren F1 and the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, two cars that took learnings from his two decades in Formula One. What do all of these cars have in common? Three things: They are light. They were built in limited numbers. And they were (and are) exceedingly expensive—when the McLaren F1 debuted in 1994, it stickered at $815,000. Murray went on to establish Gordon Murray Design in 2007. GMD has created some interesting concept vehicles, such as the diminutive T.25 city car (94.5 inches long, 51.1 inches wide and 55.1 inches high), and the OX, a lightweight truck for the developing world that packs like an IKEA shelf and is working toward realization through a worthy crowdfunding campaign established by the Global Vehicle Trust. Now he has created a vehicle manufacturing company, Gordon Murray Automotive, that will use manufacturing methods that he developed under the moniker "iStream." Unlike a unibody, there are the "iFrame," a cage-like construction made with metallic components, and the "iPanels," which are composite. The panels aren't simply a decorative skin; they actually provide structure to the vehicle. Presumably this has something of the F1 monocoque about it. Going back to the three elements, (1) this arrangement results in a vehicle that can be comparatively light; (2) Murray has indicated that his manufacturing company will be doing limited-run production; and (3) to launch Gordon Murray Automotive they are going to be building a flagship model, about which Murray said, "With our first new car, we will demonstrate a return to the design and engineering principles that have made the McLaren F1 such an icon." Which seems to imply that it will be on the pricey side. According to the company's verbiage, "iStream forges an entirely new production method that defies conventionality with its Formula One-derived construction and materials technologies." It also sounds a whole lot like ...
