Pontiac's 2009 G6 includes three different body styles--sedan, coupe, and convertible. The sedan is available in base, GT, or GXP trim, while the coupe is offered in either GT or GXP models. The convertible is only available in GT trim. The G6 convertible has room for four and a unique, tight-folding hardtop arrangement designed by German coachbuilder Karmann, which can stow away in about 30 seconds.A total of four different engines are offered in the G6 range, each paired with either a 4-speed automatic or 6-speed automatic transmission. Base G6 sedans get an economical 2.4L 4-cylinder engine that produces 164 hp, matched with a 4-speed automatic. GT models step up to a 219-hp, 3.5L V6 with variable valve timing, plus a 4-speed automatic with manual control. The top GXP model gets a more powerful 3.6L engine with variable valve timing, which makes 252 hp and is mated to a 6-speed automatic, also with manual control. On G6 convertibles, the 3.5L engine is standard, while a 3.9L V6 making 222 horsepower is optional. Both come with a 4-speed automatic with manual controls. With the 4-cylinder engine, the G6 returns impressive EPA fuel economy estimates of 22 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, while the 3.5L V6 shows 18 mpg city and 29 mpg highway. The base G6 includes air conditioning, an XM satellite radio, CD player, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, power windows, locks and mirrors, and GM's OnStar system. The mid-range GT adds a generous amount of equipment, including fog lamps, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, cruise control, keyless entry, leather interior trim and an upgraded 8-speaker Monsoon audio system with subwoofer. In addition to its 3.6L engine and 6-speed transmission, the GXP brings a sportier edge to the G6, with a performance-tuned suspension, 18-inch wheels and StabiliTrak stability control system. A number of other improvements further distinguish it from the GT trim, including a unique front fascia, dual exhaust tips, heated seats and automatic climate control.Front and side-impact airbags are standard on all G6s, while convertible G6s also include head curtain air bags. Four-wheel antilock brakes and traction control are also standard across the line.Available on the base sedan, the Sport Package allows the G6 to transform from a simple people-mover to a respectable performance sedan. It includes StabiliTrak, a transmission upgrade to the 6-speed automatic with driver shift control as well as a shorter 2.89 axle ratio. The Sport Package 2 takes it a step further, including the 3.5L V6 with variable valve timing, 17" aluminum wheels, a 3.05 ratio rear end, and hydraulic power steering.Available on the GT, the Premium Package includes heated leather power-adjustable seats. The Sun and Sound Package includes both a 6-disc CD change stereo and a power sunroof. Also available is the GT Street Edition, which dresses up the G6 with a unique front and rear fascia, mesh grilles, special 18" wheels, as well as StabiliTrak, power mirrors and a chrome exhaust. On the GXP, the Street Edition package goes for an even more extreme look with hood scoops and a spoiler.

Junkyard Gem: 2008 Pontiac G5 Coupe

Sun, Apr 9 2023

In the grim early days of the Great Recession, the situation at GM's Pontiac Division didn't feel so great but there was some cause for optimism. The Solstice still had a certain glow, the Holden Commodore-based G8 had just arrived, and vehicle shoppers could stride into their local Pontiac showrooms and choose from eight different models bearing the iconic arrowhead badge. Yes, there were still new Torrents and Grand Prix and Vibes for sale in 2008, and of course the Cavalier-twin Sunfire had been replaced by the Cobalt-twin G5 by that time. Here's one of those G5s, found in a Colorado Springs car graveyard. It wasn't long after this car was built that everything went to hell for Pontiac. In April of 2009, GM announced that the Pontiac Division would be "phased out" over the next few years. Just to drive home the point, GM itself filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy five weeks later. GM had already offed Oldsmobile—a marque dating back to 1897, making it nearly 30 years Pontiac's senior—five years earlier, so everybody knew there would be no reprieve in this case. Just to confuse everybody, Pontiac dealers offered a G3-badged Chevy Aveo (aka Daewoo Kalos) to sell alongside the G5 for 2009, but by 2010 there were just two new Pontiac models still standing in the United States: the G6 and the Vibe. Just over 70,000 G5s were sold in the United States during the 2007-2009 model years, making these cars fairly rare. The Cobalt/G5 ignition-switch fiasco of the mid-2010s really hammered their resale value at the time. Sometimes the definition of "Gem" refers to historical value, not the happier kind. Speaking of ignition switches, the key is still in this one. That generally means that a junkyard vehicle is a dealership trade-in or insurance total that couldn't sell at auction. This one is a base model, which listed at $15,675 (about $22,040 in 2023 dollars). The snazzier G5 GT started at $19,850 ($27,911 now) that year. The engine in this car is a 2.2-liter Ecotec four-banger rated at 148 horsepower and 152 pound-feet (the GT got a 2.4 with 171 hp/167 lb-ft). A five-speed manual was standard equipment, but the buyer of this car paid extra for the automatic. GM stuck these little "Mark of Excellence" badges on the fenders of its vehicles starting in 2005, then ditched the idea in 2009. I have vivid memories of this logo from the seatbelt buttons in my parents' 1973 Sportvan Beauville.

Check out the official 2013 Trans Am Hurst Edition commercial

Sat, 16 Mar 2013

The Poncho is dead. Long live the Poncho. Like certain other reoccurring personal maladies, the aftermarket community simply can't let the Trans Am go without another flare up. The guys at Trans Am Depot have worked up a quick commercial for their newest creation: The 2013 Trans Am Hurst Edition, and it watches pretty much like you'd expect it to. The footage is comprised of just about every TA male fantasy you can conceive of, from Daisy Dukes and white tank tops to tramp stamps, bikinis and ice cream cones. There simply aren't words for what you'll see below.
Of course, we like our T-Tops as much as the next guy. If you like what you see in the videos, you can pick up your very own TA by heading over to the Trans Am Depot site. The guys even have Chevrolet Camaro-based versions of the Pontiac GTO if the '77 TA treatment is too much for your tastes. Enjoy, but don't say we didn't warn you.

Drive plays Smokey, Bandit with turbo Trans Am

Sun, Jun 28 2015

The modern trend for powertrains can be summed up with the simple maxim: cut displacement and add forced induction. Whether you are looking at the just-introduced 2016 Chevrolet Cruze or a BMW M3, this adage holds true. However, Pontiac's attempt at the idea goes all the way back in 1980 with the Firebird Trans Am and its turbocharged 4.9-liter V8. Drive's Mike Musto takes out a 1981 example to explain what makes this largely forgotten muscle car so special, and it certainly isn't performance. While a 4.9-liter V8 might sound like a lot in the modern world, keep in mind that only few years before the second-generation Trans Am was available with up to a staggering 7.5-liters of displacement. Turbocharging of road cars in the early '80s was quite archaic by today's standards, and the Firebird only managed around 200 horsepower with this mill. Without much go, the turbo Trans Am made up for a lack of power with lots of show. As Musto points out, the famous flaming chicken adorns practically every surface you can see on the coupe, and boost lights on the hood illuminate when the turbo is spinning. Musto still finds a lot to like about the turbo Trans Am. He even calls it "Burt Reynolds as an automobile." Find out why the coupe is so special in this entertaining clip.
