This is “NOT” a barn find, it was never lost. It has been setting in my barn for the last 35 years and I walked around it several times a year. When we were young, my friend and I went together and bought this 1966 Pontiac Catalina Convertible and drove it home. I do not know what the history on the car is, only that we bought it locally. We were single at the time and we had great ideas of restoring the car. We removed the front and rear bumpers and had some body work done on the wheel wells, both front and rear [note before and after photos]. That body work was done in 1978 and the quality of work was not the best, so you will have to remove it and have it reworked. After working on it for a short time we became interested in other things [girls].

So 35 years has pasted and we decided to take another look at the car, notice the before and after photos. We then decided to put it back together and sell the Pontiac as is. We then found out after setting those years the motor had stuck, so we remove the engine and transmission and found that pistons #8 and # 6 were stuck. I had a mechanic look at the engine and he said overall the engine looked very good. If you purchase the car, you will have to re-install the engine and transmission.

The engine, transmission and body numbers should match because we purchase the car with only 59,000 miles on it. I found where the last owners had the oil change and the date was June 27, 1978 and we purchase the Pontiac a few months later.

All of the glass is intact and in very good condition, the car is straight, the tires will hold air but not for long, all four 14” Pontiac wheel covers are there, the sub-frame looks solid but needs cleaning up, the fuel tank looks to be clean and in good condition.  There are two 14” wheels on the driver side and two 15” wheels on the passenger side. The 15” wheels should be replace with correct 14” wheels.  I think the transmission is a 400 because the tag on the transmission reads “Hydramatc PB66 196192”. I believe the engine is a 389 with a 2 barrel carburetor.

We tried to lower the top but, we had taken the engine out of the car and did not go to the work to re-hock up the electrical system. We had never raised or lowered the top since we purchase it so; we had to un-hock the piston rods and lowered the top by hand. I sure that the top motor will also need some attention Mice have nested in the interior but the wiring seems to look good.

I had only one 1966 Kansas license plate, so I move from the front to the rear when taken the photo. The paint on the car looks better in the photo than it really is, so take a good look.

If you have question, please don’t wait until the last minute to ask. I will return you e-mail up to 12 hours before close of the auction and phone calls up to 3 hours.

Looking back at Oprah's free-car giveaway 10 years later

Fri, 12 Sep 2014

Oprah kicked off her 19th season in dramatic fashion by giving all 276 members of the studio audience a free car.
Molly Vielweber's Pontiac G6 appears unremarkable at first glance. It wears forest green paint, rolls on five-spoke aluminum wheels, and it has a sizeable scrape in the driver's side door, the scar of a decade's worth of hard use. You wouldn't notice it parked at a big box store or cruising on the highway. Pontiac made hundreds of thousands of G6s in the 2000s, and a lot are still on the road. It's unremarkable in every way except for the front license plate, which reads, "Oprah 6."

2008-2009 Pontiac G8 recalled over airbag concern

Mon, 07 Nov 2011

General Motors is recalling around 38,000 Pontiac G8 sedans from its 2008 and 2009 model years. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that the cars may have a passenger-side airbag flaw that might prevent proper deployment in certain scenarios.
According to NHTSA, the airbag might not adequately protect a fifth percentile woman - that is, a woman around four-foot, 11-inches weighing 108 pounds. The New York Times indicates that the anomaly was found during a crash test conducted by GM's Australian branch, Holden, which was testing the G8's twin (read: Commodore) for head injuries. According to that report, the test in question is specifically tailored to simulate injuries to females, so the results do not apply to men or children.
The issue has been blamed on a seat position sensor that governs airbag deployment rates. NHTSA indicates that when the front passenger seat is moved all the way forward, the faulty sensor may inappropriately trigger a 30-millisecond delay between airbag stages, potentially leading to greater injuries.

This 1927 Oakland is a minimalist hot rod

Fri, 21 Feb 2014

There are hundreds of American automakers that sprung up during the dawn of the automotive era, only to fold into obscurity or get gobbled up by what would eventually become the Big Four (yes, we're counting AMC here). Oakland is one such company, which was the forbearer for General Motors' Pontiac division. Sold until 1931, you simply don't see Oakland-badged cars anymore. Unless, that is, you know Brian Bent.
Bent drives a 1927 Oakland that still rides on wooden wheels. Its original wooden wheels, from the sound of it. That makes this anachronist and his Oakland the perfect subject for a Petrolicious video. Like many of the cars highlighted by Petrolicious, this old Oakland has had some work done to it, featuring a Pontiac flathead engine that's been pushed forward and a clutch pack built by Bent.
Take a look below for a closer look at this rare and fascinating Oakland.
