1962 Pontiac Catalina Safari Wagon

For many many years,  I drove by a large garage … some days the door on the garage would be open and I could see ‘Ratty Catty’ (my daughter named her) sitting in the same spot.  Never moved, I would wonder to myself what the story was on her and why it sat in the same spot for the majority of my life time.  One afternoon while working I happened to drive by and see her outside sitting in the shade on 4 flat tires.  That evening I couldn’t stop thinking about about Ratty Catty and decided the next morning I would get up early and go do a drive by.

I drove to the house again and got the number off the car the very next morning and later that day I called and met up with the Grandson of the car.   Ratty Catty was Grandmother’s wagon who was 90 years old when she decided to park the 10 year old Safari with 33,ooo miles.  There Ratty Catty sat for the next  41 years.

The Grandson insisted he needed the car to be gone and trailered it up and brought it to my house (he wouldn’t let me walk away without her)  I am a Pontiac collector, though Trans-Ams and Firebirds are my expertise, I was excited to see a 1962 Pontiac parked in my drive-way.

I was able to clean her up with simple soap and water, Windex the glass, Shop-Vac the interior, and power wash the exterior.  I changed the oil, plugs, cap, rotor, and points; rebuilt the original carburetor, put a new fuel pump, new top end gaskets on the original 389 motor, and fired her up.

I began restoring the brake system and never finished to take her for her first ride.  I need to make room for other projects.  The back tailgate is rusted and needs to be replace, but other than that she is a solid car with minor rust here and there.  The floor boards are SOLID and so is the frame!! Also all the glass is good.

I have listed this on other sites, but usually just have tire-kickers inquire about it.  I am not a salesman and don’t want to answer many questions.  This is a solid original project car with all original parts (except things listed above) with a clean title.

The buyer will be responsible for shipping and the seller only takes CASH.  Will load up more pictures and video this weekend once it is out of my garage.  So keep an eye out!!

Lutz says GM was working on 5th-gen Pontiac GTO

Thu, 08 Aug 2013

Bob Lutz was one of the forces behind bringing the Holden Monaro to the United States, as the ill-fated Pontiac GTO in 2004. And while that car received critical acclaim, it was a sales disappointment. Now, Road & Track is reporting that our suspicions were correct - Pontiac was working on a two-door, G8-based coupe before it was shuttered.
In that R&T article, which is no longer available online, Lutz explained that the new GTO would solve many of the issues found in the original. Car Advice speculates that the new model would have look like a rebadged version of the Holden Coupe 60 Concept from 2008, a conclusion we also came to.
That car would have been a big departure from the 2004 to 2006 GTO. It has an extremely long hood and short rear deck, with an almost fastback roofline and a wide greenhouse with a tall beltline. The wheel arches were very pronounced, and the chin and rocker panel splitters gave it a race-ready look. Would it have been enough to make the GTO work in the US? We think it might of, but it looks like we'll never know.

Tony Stewart to star in Smoke Is The Bandit web series

Mon, 10 Mar 2014

NASCAR driver Tony Stewart is making good use of his nickname Smoke in new videos inspired by the 1970s classic Smokey and the Bandit. The original is one of the quintessential automotive movies of its era with a fantastic combination of slapstick comedy and great car stunts in a Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. If you've never seen it, check it out immediately.
In the new six-part Smoke IS the Bandit web series, Stewart takes on the role of Burt Reynolds' famous character complete with huge mustache. But instead of trying to smuggle cases of Coors beer it's Mobil 1 oil. The series promises to recreate many of the famous scenes from the movie and includes cameos from other NASCAR drivers.
To complete the look, future videos just need a quality replacement for a young Sally Field to ride shotgun. It would also be really cool if Reynolds could make a brief appearance at some point. Scroll down to check out the trailer and the first episode in the series.

Airbag recall adds 85k Pontiac Vibes to tally

Fri, 13 Jun 2014

The repairs needed for the faulty airbag inflators supplied by Takata continue to expand. Toyota initially announced a recall of 766,300 vehicles equipped with the bad part on June 11 as a followup to a campaign from 2013. Soon after, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened a preliminary evaluation into five automakers who also used the component in their models. Now, NHTSA has released the official announcement of the latest Toyota recall listing 844,277 affected cars, including the newly added 2003-2004 Pontiac Vibe.
While NHTSA's document didn't include a model-by-model breakdown, General Motors spokesperson Alan Adler estimated to Autoblog that roughly 85,000 Vibes in the US would be covered under the latest recall. Like the rest of the affected models, the airbag inflator could rupture in a crash causing the bag not to work correctly, possibly spraying metal fragments at the occupant.
Toyota spokesperson Cindy Knight told Autoblog that the reason for the disparity between the earlier press release and NHTSA document was that Toyota was continuing to comb through VINs to create a list of affected vehicles. The original number was an estimate of that process at the time. Scroll down to the recall report from NHTSA.
