The 11 best scenes from the 2015 Goodwood Festival of Speed
Tue, Jun 30 2015Over the last three days, the Goodwood Estate has played home to the eponymous Festival of Speed. Thrown by the biggest gearhead in the British aristocracy – Charles Gordon-Lennox, the Earl of March and Kinrara – the Festival of Speed is essentially a tremendous, gasoline-fuelled party, complete with a very large lawn sculpture, that features the world's hottest, weirdest, fastest, and loudest race, production, and historic models. While there are quite literally dozens and dozens of videos from the event – not to mention the full-day replays (of which only day one is available, at present) – we've sifted through them to pluck away the very best. There's stuff from the official Goodwood YouTube channel, as well as several videos from automakers and other third-party channels, and it's all available below. 2015 Ford Mustang GT350R Looks Barely Controllable If you thought the highest-performance Ford Mustang would somehow get more tractable or civilized once it moved to an independent rear suspension, this video shows you have nothing to worry about. Watch as an unnamed driver wrestles the new Shelby GT350R and its flat-plane, 5.2-liter V8 up the hillclimb circuit. Even with the new suspension and sticky tires, this Mustang wants to go any direction but straight, especially following its launch. 2016 Ford Focus RS, Is Very Loud, Blue Ken Block makes his first appearance on our list. Before he steps into his Hoonicorn Mustang, though, the Gymkhana expert tackled the hill in the all-new Focus RS. The vicious bellow of the 2.3-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder is the star of this commentary-free video, although the gorgeous Nitrous Blue paint job is a nice accompaniment, as well. 1965 Ford Mustang Hoonicorn Runs Hill, Nearly Kills Lord March Mr. Block's two runs behind the wheel of the Hoonicorn were, unsurprisingly, very eventful. While one attempt goes off without a hitch, seeing the American rally driver slip and slide his way to the top of the hill while taking a short break for a donut, the other is slightly more dramatic. Block, along with Lord March in the passenger seat, carries a bit too aggressive an angle into a turn and nearly puts the NASCAR-powered Mustang into the hay bales. Nissan Juke Nismo RS sets world record for driving on two wheels
Sat, Jun 27 2015Motorcycle enthusiasts live by the epithet "two wheels good, four wheels bad." But what about when the two good wheels happen to be on a four-wheeled vehicle? And what, we might add, happens when said four-wheeled vehicle is trying to breaka a Guiness World Record? Well, you get the latest stunt from the Goodwood Festival of Speed. In between the vintage, occasionally crashy racers and modern metal, the British division of Nissan sent stunt driver Terry Grant out onto the famous Goodwood circuit in a Juke Nismo RS, where he ran the entire course while driving on two wheels. Really, you need to see it to believe it. But while the feat itself is truly impressive, what's most entertaining is the typically droll commentating of the British announcers. They're basically talking about this car in much the same manor as you or I might discuss the weather. Never mind that this is a small crossover driving 1.16 miles, along a twisty course, on just two wheels. While the distance is impressive, Grant also made the journey at a pretty reasonable speed. He completed the run in just two minutes and ten seconds. That means he had to average over 30 miles per hour across the entire course... while driving on just two wheels. You'll want to take a look at the video at the top of the page, just to experience and enjoy a truly impressive piece of driving.
Weekly Recap: Chevy and Alfa plot comeback strategies
Sat, Jun 27 2015Chevrolet and Alfa Romeo were two of the 20th Century's most iconic automotive brands. Chevy embodied America's post-war power and confidence. Alfa was the definition of the stylish Italian sports car. They reached halcyon heights in the 1950s and '60s, before declining precipitously amid new competition, changing consumer tastes, and uneven corporate management. Both say 2015 is the start of something better, and this week Chevy and Alfa laid out ambitious plans and showcased new cars that they hope will make them more relevant this year, and in the coming years. Each brand sits at its own crossroads, and their paths forward are as different as the Chevy Cruze and the Alfa Romeo Giulia. Chevy is still a sales beast, as evidenced by its volume of 4.8 million vehicles sold around the world last year. Chevy executives are fond of saying one of their cars is sold every seven seconds, which illustrates the strength and reach of a car brand that is the fourth largest in the world. "Make no mistake about it, we are a brand for the people," said General Motors North America president Alan Batey. But he wants consumers to want to buy a Chevy for its design and technology, not simply because it's affordable. That starts with all Chevys now featuring a distinctive a family look, with sporty cues from the Corvette or strong lines that riff on the Silverado pickup. "We want people to fall in lust with our cars," said Mike Pevovar, executive design director for Chevy passenger cars. "That initial emotional attraction has to be right on the exterior, and that's where form comes into play." Chevy is also loading up its cars, like the freshly unveiled 2016 Chevy Cruze, with technology to appeal to a younger crowd that prizes connectivity. The Cruze will offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with its MyLink infotainment system, and OnStar with 4G LTE and wifi. Seeking out younger buyers is also sound business practice: Millennials now outnumber Baby Boomers as the largest single age group in the United States. Younger buyers also can improve a brand's image, which is another area where Chevy would like to improve. Chevy ranks 82nd on Interbrand's Best Global Brand's list, behind 11 other automakers. Is a Nissan Leaf with a 250-mile range less than three years off?
Fri, Jun 26 2015Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn has never shied away from bold proclamations. Most recently, he implied that an electric vehicle with a single-charge range comparable to that of a gas-powered vehicle on a full tank may be fewer than three years out. We'd love to see it. Indeed, Ghosn said that such a car may be around in the "near future," Hybrid Cars said, citing a presentation Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn made to shareholders earlier this week. He also showed a video of a Nissan Leaf in Japan, which appears to start out on a trip with 417 km (259 miles) of range available. The 2015 Leaf's single-charge range is rated at 84 miles in the US. How to get another 120 miles or so? Ghosn's talking about a still-lighter vehicle as well as cheaper batteries and improved battery chemistry. He also alluded to shorter recharging times. Last month, word got out that Nissan was working on a top-of-the-line Leaf that, as soon as this fall, would include a 30-kilowatt-hour battery, up from the standard 24-kWh version. Such a variant, which would be launched ahead of the next-generation Leaf slated for as soon as 2017, could boost the Leaf's single-charge range to as far as 105 miles. Recharge Wrap-up: Nissan, Tesla report CO2 savings, rare earth metal recycling simplified
Fri, Jun 26 2015A new process simplifies the recycling of rare earth metals. While the strong magnetic properties of metals like neodymium and dysprosium make them useful in electric vehicles traction motors, there are concerns about their availability and the environmental costs of mining them. Researchers at University of Pennsylvania have developed an easier method to recycle those metals that is less energy intensive and more cost effective. "We have designed a way to separate the two metals by selectively dissolving the neodymium in a solution and leaving behind the dysprosium as a solid," says Justin Bogart, a graduate student working on the project. "This quick and easy method has allowed us to separate equal mixtures of the metals into samples that are 95 percent pure." Now the team is working to improve that level of purity. Read more from University of Pennsylvania. Nissan Leaf drivers in Europe have saved over 55,000 tons of CO2 emissions. Worldwide, the 178,074 Leafs sold account for the prevention of over 293,000 tons of CO2 emissions so far. That equates that to the neutralizing effect of 19 million trees. Besides the positive effects on environmental and noise pollution that switching to electric mobility provides, Nissan also points out that it's good business, too. EVs like the Nissan Leaf and e-NV200 cost about 40 percent less than combustion vehicles to maintain, and the cost of electricity is substantially lower than that of fossil fuels. Additionally, Nissan has published a video of the Leaf touring Bristol to celebrate the greening of European cities with the help of electric vehicles. See the video, and read more from Nissan. Tesla customers have driven a cumulative 1 billion miles. Together, nearly 75,000 Model S drivers have prevented more than 570,000 tons of CO2 emissions worldwide. To put that in perspective, a billion miles is the equivalent of 4,186 trips to the moon, and almost 40,000 trips around the Earth. In the UK, where the Model S is celebrating its one-year anniversary, drivers have already accumulated 6.6 million miles. Tesla is celebrating its milestone with the Next Billion Miles Tour, hosting hands-on events and test drives in 80 cities across North America, Europe and Asia. On Location: 2015 Nissan Micra Cup racecar at Mont-Tremblant
Fri, Jun 26 2015Circuit Mont-Tremblant has an almost mythical aura for North American road racers, and it was the setting for our high speed test of the 2015 Nissan Micra Cup racecar. Nestled in the Laurentian Mountains of Quebec, the course hosted Formula One races in 1968 and 1970, Trans-Am and Can-Am competition in the 1960s and '70s, and more recently a Champ Car event in 2007. In its current configuration, Mont-Tremblant has 15 turns and covers 2.65 miles of rural Quebec about 90 minutes northwest of Montreal. Put simply: It's an excellent venue to test the Micra Cup racer, which is underpinning a spec series in Canada this summer and fall. The cars are outfitted with a Nismo suspension kit, FIA-approved racing seat with a five-point harness, safety cage, upgraded brakes, modified exhaust, and Pirelli low-profile performance tires. The stock 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine with 109 horsepower mated to a five-speed manual is unchanged. It's a cool, misty day when we get behind the wheel of the Micra Cup car. Though we're nervous, Nissan is billing the Micra Cup as a series for nearly anyone, calling it the bridge between karting and more serious racing. We believe that – the Cup car is fairly easy to drive – and our instructor is helpful with tips on the gearing and setting up corners. We finish our laps feeling excited, challenged, and wanting more. As the video above shows, the car is eager to please, and it's a lot of fun to toss around an iconic track.
Nissan takes over naming rights for Tennessee Titans stadium [UPDATE]
Thu, Jun 25 2015UPDATE: Nissan has released a pair of renderings showing how the stadium could look when the transformation is complete. Check them out in the gallery above. Nissan looms large in Nashville. That's where its North American headquarters are based, and just 25 miles down the road in Smyrna is its massive assembly plant. But it's about to become an even bigger part of the Tennessee metropolis as the Japanese automaker has acquired the naming rights to the stadium where the Tennessee Titans play. The deal, confirmed by Nissan in correspondence with Autoblog this morning, will see the sports complex switch names from LP Field (currently named for building materials firm Lousiana-Pacific Corp.) to Nissan Stadium. The arrangement will be valid for the next 20 years. What's more, the deal will be in place in time for Nissan to introduce its new Titan pickup that shares its name with the football team, despite being built in Mississippi. The contract will also see Nissan become the official automotive partner of the Titans. Aside serving as the NFL team's home, the Nashville stadium also plays host to Tennessee State University football, the Music City Bowl, and numerous other events. Country music fans may be more familiar with the CMA Music Festival, held every year at the stadium and nearby Riverside Park, but we're most looking forward to a Rams-Titans showdown to determine who plays the best ball and makes the best truck. Of course, Nissan isn't the only automaker to have its name on a major sports complex in America. In fact Nissan Stadium won't even be the only NFL stadium named after a car company: Mercedes has the naming rights for the Louisiana Superdome that the New Orleans Saints call home, and the Detroit Lions play at Ford Field. (Sorry to break it to you, but Tiger Stadium had nothing more to do with Sunbeams than New York's Polo Grounds did with little Volkswagens or Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field has to do with leasing Town Cars.)
Nissan rolls out updated Juke-R 2.0 at Goodwood
Thu, Jun 25 2015If you thought the original Nissan Juke-R was badass, just check out this latest version. Called the Juke-R 2.0, it's making its debut as promised this weekend at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, packing a series of upgrades to make it even more potent than the original version. And not the least of those is a new, 600-horsepower engine. For those who don't recall, Nissan first launched the Juke-R four years ago – the year after the production Juke first hit the market. The idea was to cross-breed the little crossover with a GT-R and create what was billed as the world's first crossover supercar. Version 2.0 takes the idea even further. In place of the 545-horsepower twin-turbo V6 from the GT-R available at the time it was built, the Juke-R 2.0 packs the upgraded 600-horsepower engine from the GT-R Nismo. It also incorporates the enhancements applied to the facelifted Juke revealed last year, including its revised lighting and bodywork. Only the Juke-R 2.0 also features entirely new bumpers front and rear, wheel arches, side sills, and more, all crafted from carbon fiber and coated in matte black. Nissan isn't saying exactly what she'll do. Considering, however, that the existing version could sprint from a standstill to 60 in three seconds flat, the added power could only make it even quicker. Le Mans driver Jann Mardenborough will be driving up the hill at Goodwood, and we doubt it'll take him much time at all to reach the top. Next Nissan Z could be more like original 240
Wed, Jun 17 2015The current Nissan 370Z is six years old, meaning a replacement is on the horizon. But what will the next Z car be? In an interview at last weekend's 24 Hours of Le Mans, Nissan Chief Creative Office Shiro Nakamura revealed that one idea for the next-generation Z could see it move down market, closer to the original 240Z or the 1999 Concept Z. "We would like to do something ... more practical and appealing to younger customers." – Shiro Nakamura "We are studying a couple of different concepts. Because the sports car market is becoming smaller globally," said Nakamura, "We would like to do something, I personally think, is more [in the] original concept of Z, which is ... more practical and appealing to younger customers." The original 1969 240Z, sold under the Datsun nameplate, became an icon thanks to a combination of attractive styling, reasonable performance, and affordable price. In 1970, a new 240Z went for less than $3,600 at the dealer, although high demand resulted in early resale values above retail. In the US, the 240Z begat the 280Z in 1975. Subsequent versions grew in numerical name and performance, but that trend has an end point. The future path may be to reverse course, jokes Nakamura. "We are questioning ourselves in repeating the 350, 370. We don't want to create 390Z, right?" While Nissan is working on the next Z, the bad news is that the IDx is confirmed dead. First shown at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show, the IDx concept was a vision of an affordable, four-seat sports car like original Nissan/Datsun 510. "I think IDx will not be produced," said Nakamura, before continuing to say that the Z could fill that role. Don't expect a Mazda MX-5 Miata or Subaru BRZ/Scion FR-S clone. When asked specifically about the MX-5, the Nissan designer stated "We may not necessarily go into the same category. Personally I see other options that are very interesting. We want to do something the same as this, unique," he said, referencing a picture of the GTR-LM racecar on the wall. As for timing, we couldn't get any specifics. And the chances of the Z moving down market aren't even certain. "We still need time to finalize this," said the Nissan chief designer, "I mean, we have a couple of ideas." Related Video:
Nissan sees old Leaf batteries working for stationary energy
Tue, Jun 16 2015Nissan will start working with a Silicon Valley-based company to further explore creating a market in which old Leaf electric-vehicle batteries can be reused for stationary energy storage. In fact, the Japanese automaker will deploy its first network of old Leaf batteries for electricity storage at one lucky Nissan facility this summer. No, we don't know where that facility is either. The Santa Clara, CA-based Green Charge Networks will be a partner in the project. The concept of the "second-life" lithium-ion battery program involves finding ways to reuse batteries that have outserved their usefulness providing power to Leaf EVs. In this project's case, "multiple" Leaf batteries will be linked to provide power during mid-day peak energy demand, when electricity is at its most expensive. Nissan's done these kind of things before, although, as is the case here, they've always been pilot projects. In fact, the Nissan 4R ("Reuse, Resell, Refabricate and Recycle") team that's working with Green Charge Network is actually a joint-venture Nissan formed with Sumitomo Corp. in 2010. Since then, Nissan has sold more than 178,000 Leaf EVs, giving the company a solid inventory of older lithium-ion batteries to work with in the coming years. In a new stationary storage application powered by Green Charge's intelligent software and Power Efficiency Agreement™, the second-life energy storage unit has a cost advantage over traditional units, opening up new markets where incentive programs are currently not offered.
