Autoblog Minute: VW finds CO2 'irregularities', Takata dropped by automakers, SEMA recap

US regulators issue a significant fine to Takata Corporation. And we take a peek inside tuner paradise at the 2015 SEMA show. The VW diesel emissions scandal, first brought to light in September, gets a new wrinkle, as an internal investigation by the German automaker revealed [00:00:30] irregularities in CO2 emissions that could affect approximately 800,000 vehicles. VW estimates the issue could pose a 2-billion euro economic risk. VW claims that most of the vehicles affected have diesel engines, but industry analysts say a 1.4-liter gas engine is also affected. VW says that fuel consumption figures were set too low during the CO2 certification process. During all of this, sales of some diesel-powered Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche models [00:01:00] have been halted. Takata Corporation is back in the news in connection with its deadly airbag scandal. Federal regulators fined Takata $70 million. If the parts supplier does not comply, the fine could balloon to $200 million. Takata was also dropped this week by its biggest customer, Honda. And now, Toyota and Mazda will be following Honda's lead in dropping Takata. We're also hearing that Mitsubishi and Subaru are considering a switch in air-bag inflator suppliers. SEMA 2015 [00:01:30] came and went. We saw offerings from Mopar, like the AWD Challenger concept. Honda unveiled a Ridgeline that it will race at the Baja 1000, which gives us a hint at what future production model could look like. The celebrity presence was also felt in Vegas as it always is. Kid Rock brought a Duramax Diesel Chevy Silverado, and Acura restored and presented Ludacris with his now famous 1993 Acura Legend. Those are the highlights from the week that was. Mitsubishi celebrates 40 years in the U.S. with special-edition Outlander

Mitsubishi's North American division is celebrating its 40th birthday by releasing a special-edition Outlander called the Anniversary Edition. The commemorative SUV receives a specific two-tone paint job, "40th Anniversary" emblems, and more equipment and features. Dodge and Plymouth sold Mitsubishi models as captive imports for over a decade before the Japanese company established an American division in Fountain Valley, California, in 1981. Sales started in 1982 for the 1983 model year with a range that consisted of the Cordia, the Tredia, and the Starion. Fast-forward to 2023 and the Outlander gets the honor of celebrating 40 years of Mitsubishi in the United States. You don't need to be a seasoned car-spotter to tell the Outlander 40th Anniversary Edition apart from the regular-production model. Visually, it stands out with Black Diamond paint, a bronze-painted roof, a bright "OUTLANDER" emblem on the hood, and a rear bumper protector. Inside, it offers scuff plates on the door sills and an illuminated center console. It's based on the range-topping SEL Premium Package trim, so it's relatively highly-equipped: The list of standard features includes leather upholstery, a Bose sound system, and a head-up display. On sale now across the nation, the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander 40th Anniversary Edition carries a base price of $41,340 including a $1,345 destination charge. For context, the Outlander SEL Premium Package that the Anniversary Edition is based on costs $38,190. The plug-in hybrid version of the Outlander 40th Anniversary Edition offers the exact same list of equipment and edition-specific features but costs $51,340. Even Ferrari swept up in latest Takata recall expansion

The scope of Takata's deadly airbag problems continues to widen. Eight manufacturers announced recalls Friday that affect more than 12 million vehicles, according to documents filed with federal regulators. The automakers include Honda, which is recalling 4.5 million units, Fiat Chrysler with 4.3 million, Toyota with 1.65 million, and Subaru, which is recalling almost 400,000. Some of these cars include the Saab 9-2x and Pontiac Vibe that Toyota and Subaru made for General Motors. Mazda will recall 730,000 vehicles and Nissan has 400,000 affected units. The smallest numbers were posted by Mitsubishi, with 38,000 Lancers manufactured from 2006 to 2007, and as a noteworthy high-end manufacturer, Ferrari is calling back 2,800 vehicles. These are all US-market cars. Beyond America, the Japanese Transport Ministry has announced seven million additional vehicles will be recalled, which means 19.6 million vehicles across the globe are affected by recalls announced. The defects have been traced to an insufficiently manufactured airbag inflator, which lacks a drying agent that would prevent the inflators from deteriorating over time. Thirteen deaths have been linked to the faulty airbags, which have become unstable and are prone to exploding and showering vehicle occupants with lethal amounts of metal shrapnel. A private equity firm, KKR & Co., has been named in a possible buyout of the struggling Takata.
