I have owned this 1972 Morris Mini 850 for 2 and a half years, it has been garaged for the majority of the time and taken to plenty of shows and events around England. This Mini truly is something special, still running the 848cc engine, the "magic wand" gearstick (none remote), hand pump window washer, single speed wipers and manual choke, it's great fun to drive and very economical - generally managing to get over 30mpg. Although the engine is small, it keeps up with most road traffic, I've had comments from other mini owners with larger engines of how well it manages to keep up with them.
Prior to owning, this mini had been taken off the road in 1996 when it was owned by an airplane technician, who made slow progress on restoration, he then sold it on to a gentleman who restores classic cars as a hobby, he restored the mini to the best of his ability, fitting replacement panels where needed and plenty of new mechanical parts, along with new carpets - I can provide photos of the rebuild if requested as I am still in touch with the gentleman who rebuilt it. The paintwork isn't perfect - he wasn't a professional, although the finish is great - I have provided a photo of the area that has been rubbed down causing it to look grey (primer). It has been upgraded to an aftermarket electronic ignition, and the grey interior is from a later "Mini Sprite", also "angel eye" headlights have been fitted. I have the original steering wheel if the new buyer would prefer, however it looks more like it belongs on a bus! This mini is definitely a great 20 footer! This Mini has been well loved and pampered in the time I have owned it, I have upgraded from a dynamo to an alternator. The manual sunroof is fully working, and doesn't leak when it rains! The heater works and will blow cold air too, the window winders are a little stiff but work fine. The engine is the one it rolled out of the factory with, and has covered just over 70,000 miles - and still runs as it should do, I have the paperwork to support the mileage from previous MOT certificates. It is fitted with a 5.5 gallon fuel tank. The mini is fitted with a stereo, with 5" Focal full-range speakers at the back and 3" Ripspeed full-range at the front, the head-unit that is currently fitted will be removed on sale. The bad bits: The Mini could probably do with a new timing chain, I have all the parts; depending on how soon the sale goes ahead will decide whether I have time to get this replaced, if I get the full asking price I will make sure this is completed before shipping. There are a few very minor areas of surface rust bubbling up; on the rear quarter panel, below the passenger side headlight, along the "a panel" seam bband a few smaller areas where the paint has split. Also worth mentioning is the rattle from what I believe is the speedometer cable, I have had this checked over by a mini specialist and I have been assured this is not an issue that will affect the reliability and running of the car. This Mini has been extremely reliable, and any issues I've had, I have been able to fix myself at the roadside. Even over here this mini gets plenty of attention and I'm certain over in the States it will receive double if not more attention!! I'm willing to help where ever I can to make shipping as smooth and easy for the buyer as possible, however the buyer will need to cover their own shipping costs. Recharge Wrap-up: Mini Superleggera decision delayed, Denza begins production
Thu, Sep 11 2014A decision on whether or not to build the Mini Superleggera has been pushed back. Earlier this year, Mini's Peter Schwarzenbauer hinted that the electric roadster concept could eventually make its way to production. Now, Schwarzenbauer is saying that a possible call is still at least six months away. "To really investigate seriously," Schwarzenbauer says, "you look into several different options, you come to the question: do we produce it ourselves, do we give it to somebody else?" Mini is considering whether or not to expand its seven-car lineup to 10 models, or scale it back to five "superheroes," which still wouldn't rule out more models. Read more at Reuters. The first EV from Daimler and BYD's joint venture, Denza, is set to go on sale this month, with production already starting. The 50/50 partnership said earlier that it was "well on track" to begin sales in September 2014. Now, Daimler has announced that the first Denza has rolled off the production line. According to Daimler, the cars will be sold through an independent dealer network. The Denza, which has a range of about 186 miles, will start at about $60,000. The keyless technology allows employees to reserve and use the right vehicle for the job, and allows companies to save on vehicle ownership and maintenance. BMW recalling 140,000 electric Mini Cooper SEs for battery issue
Tue, Sep 3 2024BERLIN — German automaker BMW is recalling electric Mini Cooper SE vehicles due to problems in their batteries, which could potentially affect more than 140,000 autos worldwide. Included in the recall are 12,535 Mini SEs sold in the United States. Around 39,000 vehicles could be affected in Germany, the company said in a statement on Monday, adding that there are no known accidents or injuries caused by the problem. Problems in the battery system can lead to overheating. "A vehicle fire, even when the vehicle is parked, cannot be ruled out," the statement said. There was such a "thermal event" in the U.S. in October 2023, then another in Germany in January 2024. Both have been under investigation. BMW will install a software update in the EVs. The update contains a diagnostic function that will recognize a malfunction of the battery and alerts the driver. The NHTSA recall statement says the software will then somehow discharge the battery to less than a 30% state of charge. Customers who received the message are asked to visit a Mini partner, the company said.
Mini Countryman plug-in hybrid out for a snowy stroll
Mon, Feb 2 2015When Mini launched the Countryman in 2010, it emerged as the brand's first all-wheel-drive model. Now there's a new Countryman on the way, and it's also set to mark a Mini first by incorporating not just a mild hybrid system, but a plug-in hybrid powertrain. And that's just what we're looking at here. How do we know this prototype is packing a hybrid powertrain, you ask? A fair question, and we'll tell you: because the manufacturer chose to mark "Hybrid Test Vehicle" on the door. And because parent company BMW is already known to be working on a PHEV system for the 2 Series Active Tourer on which the new Mini crossover will be based, it's fairly safe to say it won't be developing a separate system for the Countryman. Expect the hybrid mega-Mini to combine a 1.5-liter inline-three driving 136 horsepower to the front wheels, and an electric motor good for another 102 hp on the rear wheels for through-the-road all-wheel drive and a combined output of nearly 240 hp.
