You are bidding on a vintage and rare 1958 Mercury Montclair Turnpike Cruiser 2-Door Hardtop Coupe. This highly collectible rust free original California classic car just completed a mechanical and exterior restoration.  This is a one owner car and was purchased from the estate of the original owner.  The car was located in the previous owner's garage where it had been stored 40 years and was last registered 1974.  The car was originally manufactured in  the Los Angeles California plant and has been in California its entire life. The car odometer shows 71,500 original miles on it and has the highly desirable and original black California license plates.

The Mercury Turnpike Cruiser was the flagship model of the Mercury Division of the Ford Motor Company that was produced from 1957 to 1958. The Mercury Turnpike Cruiser was known as the car with the "Sports Car Spirit with Limousine ride”.   In 1957 7,291 two-door hardtops were produced. In 1958 only 2,865 two-door hardtops were built thereby making the 1958 rarer than the 1957.

This car is a very nice driver.  It is not perfect and not show car but definitely and eye catcher.  This car has the factory original 383 cu in (6.3L) Marauder V8 engine with a three-speed Merc-O-Matic automatic transmission with Teletouch push button controls  It has power brakes and power steering and the cool rear Breezeway window. Extensive and expensive work was done and thousands were spent on this car in order to bring it back to life so the new owner will not have to. The following is detailed information on what was done to the car so you can make an informed decision.

Exterior: Car was sanded down to metal and minor body work was done.  The car has a fresh new 3- tone color combination to match the interior. The original body color of this car is Tuxedo Black with Silver Sheen Metallic. However in my view the original exterior colors would not bring out the cool interior colors.    All you need to do is rub it out and polish it or simply keep it as is with the new shiny colors.  The trim, chrome and molding are all in original condition.  The hood ornament is missing. Also, the left front door window has cracks. The rear left tail light lens and clamshell chrome trim was replaced with OE used parts.

Interior: The interior is original and in beautiful condition which was the most remarkable part of the car when found.  The black, red and white seats and in great condition. The only imperfection is two small puncture holes on the top rear of driver front seat back cover. Also, the chrome rear left window crank is there and works but the knob is missing. The black, red and silver door panels, black dash and  tan headliner are in nice condition.

Engine: The engine is complete and original. I replaced freeze plugs and the manifold gasket. This entailed removal of the engine, manifold and transmission.  The car has a new battery, starter, points, distributor cap, spark plugs, points, condenser, wires, both fan belts, thermostat and fuel tank sending unit.  It has a rebuilt fuel pump and water pump.  I repaired the radiator, drained and cleaned out gas tank. I changed oil, oil filter, air filter, coolant, brake and power steering fluids.  I replaced water hoses and clamps.Engine runs strong and sound great

Wheels and brakes; I replaced the rear brakes and repaired the power brakes master cylinder. The front brakes and all four wheel cylinders are in good condition.  I installed four good used Firestone tires with new valve stems.

Electrical:  The radio, front lights, tail lights, brake and  back up lights, turn signals work.  The clock and rear Breezeway window switch do not appear to be working.  I am not sure if it is only a fuse that needs to be replaced.

Undercarriage: The frame, front and rear floors and trunk are solid and in beautiful condition. The trunk is in pristine condition. It has the original liner/cover, jack, spare tire and user instructions. The exhaust system works properly and sounds good but should be replaced due to the age of the car.

Question of the Day: Most degraded car name?

Fri, May 27 2016

When Ford came up with a not-so-sporty version of the Pinto and slapped Mustang badges on it in 1974, that was a low point for the Mustang name. When Chrysler applied the venerable Town & Country name on perfectly functional but unglamorous minivans, it saddened many of us. But perhaps the biggest demotion for a once-proud model came when, in 1988, General Motors imported a misery-enhancing Daewoo from Korea and called it the Pontiac LeMans. The original Pontiac LeMans was a great-looking midsize car with fairly advanced (for the time) suspension design and engine options including potent V8s and a screaming overhead-cam straight-six. The Daewoo-based Pontiac LeMans was a cramped, shoddy hooptie that served only to ruin the LeMans name forever, while stealing sales from the Suzuki-based Chevrolet Sprint. Sure, using the once-respected Monterey name on the Mercurized Ford Freestar was bad, but Mercury didn't have long to live at that point. I say the downward spiral of the LeMans name was the most agonizing in automotive history. What do you think? Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party. Auto Show Notebook: Legendary Continental name inspired Lincoln's designers

Thu, Apr 2 2015

What's in a name? A lot for the Continental concept, and it gave Lincoln designers a sense of purpose as they styled the brand's upcoming flagship sedan. "The moment that we told them, it was amazing," Lincoln president Kumar Galhotra said. "They totally got it." "It" is cutting-edge technology wrapped in stately, large-sedan design. It's a nod to Lincoln's storied past, but a signpost for where the brand is heading. Though the Continental name dates to the late 1930s, Lincoln designers avoided making the concept overtly retro. "You can't let it pull yourself back too far in history, but you've got to design a car that lives up to the name," Galhotra said. Speaking to Autoblog on the floor of the New York Auto Show where the Continental formally debuted Wednesday, the Lincoln president reiterated that the car is on track to launch in 2016. It will compete against the Audi A6, Lexus GS, BMW 5 Series and other large luxury sedans. After its debut, the concept in New York will fly to China – another critical market for Lincoln – for display there. It will be replaced in New York by a prototype without an interior. The Continental is the latest high profile play by Lincoln to raise its image with consumers, who have either ignored or forgotten about it amid steep competition in the luxury sector from German and Japanese brands and a potentially resilient Cadillac. Lincoln sales are essentially flat compared with 2014 through the first quarter of this year, with total volume of 21,478 units. The middling start to 2015 comes on the heels of nearly 16-percent sales growth last year spurred by the launch of the MKC and the prominent signing of Matthew McConaughey to star in Lincoln advertisements. Other News, Notes & Quotes Speaking of names, Chevrolet did its homework before deciding to proceed with "Malibu" for its new generation of midsize cars. "We went out and researched it," said Alan Batey, president of General Motors North America. "People actually like the name 'Malibu,'" he said. Admittedly, the current Malibu has struggled in the marketplace against entrenched competitors, Batey said, but he's optimistic its awareness and historical value are assets to the dramatically redesigned sedan."The name's strong," he said. Meanwhile, in other Chevy news, the brand kicked off a new marketing campaign, "Real People, Not Actors" Wednesday. It will show consumers interacting with Chevys and their spontaneous reactions to the vehicles.

Icon and Stealth EV are building an electric Derelict Mercury

Mon, May 14 2018

Icon, a company known for its high-quality restomod vehicles, is building another Derelict, this one a 1949 Mercury coupe. While the fact Icon is building another one of its sleeper hot rods with patina isn't the most shocking, what's under the hood is. The company has teamed up with Stealth EV to turn this latest Derelict into an electric car. This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Manage Settings. The car was shown in the above Twitter post with video. The exterior is just what you'd expect from an Icon Derelict. It's solid but with a weathered finish. And even as the guy from Stealth EV approaches the car, it looks like it has a V8 under the hood. But as he explains, there's actually the two motor controllers and half of a Tesla battery pack under there. It's just that they've all been given some classy looking metal casings and mounted to look like a V8. Apparently the motors themselves are in the transmission tunnel. The Stealth EV rep says it uses a pair of AM Racing motors. Depending on which motor controllers the companies are using, those motors could produce as much as 700 horsepower. Power will go to the rear wheels and no transmission will be used, making it direct drive. It will have a limited-slip differential, and the whole car sits on an Art Morrison chassis with independent suspension. This actually isn't the first electric Icon, nor the first developed with Stealth EV. Before this, the companies created a totally awesome electric Volkswagen Thing. That little truck made much less power at 180 horses, but it was also a way smaller and lighter vehicle. Related Video:
