1969 Mercury Cougar Convertible. All original 290 HP 351 Windsor V8, T-type center floor automatic transmission shifter (Merc-O-Matic) transmission. This is an all original car. She is a great “Daily Driver.” The interior is in excellent condition—previous owner was an upholsterer. This is a California “Black Plate” car. The top is newer and the entire top mechanism works perfectly. All of the gauges work, wipers, lights (yes, the light doors operate). The steering wheel horn assembly is non-op. This is not an A/C car. The VIN is 9F92H; 9 = 69 F = Dearborn Mich, 92 = Convertible (very few cars were made for this being the first year the convertible was offered,) H = 351 Windsor.

The engine was recently rebuilt, and it shows. She runs like a honey needing speed. New battery, dist. Cap, rotor, and wires. New Interstate  (heavy duty 1000  CCA) battery w/ new cables—not shown in photo but is now installed in the car, new starter and solenoid too. This car has been very well taken care of—and it shows. It is NOT an X-R7 nor is it an Eliminator—it does have the stripping down the sides for the Eliminator. The engine oil pan gasket has minor oil leak, and the transmission speedo gear o-ring seal is leaking.

The paint is NOT the original color, the “door tag” is not there—so I do not know the original color. It appears to be a newer paint job, but does have minor paint chips—see pictures. No dents, and yes, the car does shine well in the sun—see pics too. No rust found anywhere, there is a carpet kit installed in the trunk, and it is glued down on the sides, looking from underneath the floor pans look great.

The main frame does not appear to have been on a frame straightener; so, looks like no major accidents. The entire undercarriage was cleaned, see pics, looks like when they did a restoration, it was not a full “FRAME-OFF,” but a thorough job was. The car drives well, no pulling of the steering wheel, no braking problems, and the car shifts well. All four tires a new, w/ less than 50 miles on them. I did have the rear trunk lid chrome piece refurbished—it came out great; all other chrome is in great condition w/o any pitting or flaking. This is your opportunity to own a convertible classic w/ great looks and HP to take it around for a cruise.

Please read the following--before you bid!

The car is for sale locally; so I could end auction at any time.

Please send your inspector BEFORE you bid on the car. Inspections are encouraged and welcomed.

It is your responsibility to verify to the cars true "originality;" you pay your mechanic to tear down the engine to verify.

Any photos you want, of any area of the car, I will take and send it to you via email.

Report: Lincoln getting all of Mercury's ad dollars

Mon, 03 Jan 2011

Now that the curtain has closed on Mercury, Ford Motor Company will redirect all of its marketing dollars for the oft-overlooked brand to the Blue Oval's luxury outpost, Lincoln. In speaking to Automotive News, the chairman of the Lincoln National Dealer Council, Bob Tasca, Jr., said, "You'll see a lot stronger presence in the advertising of Lincoln in 2011."
Lincoln spokesperson Christian Bokich reminded AN that the automaker is "preparing the way for seven new or significantly refreshed vehicles" that will be launched over the next four years, and the largest ad blitz in 2011 will focus on the refreshed MKX crossover, as well as the MKZ sedan and its hybrid counterpart. Following that, Lincoln has plans to launch a completely overhauled version of its Navigator SUV, an all-new C-segment vehicle and the overhauled 2013 MKZ, which Tasca says will be "strikingly different from its Ford Fusion sibling."

Junkyard Gem: 1991 Mercury Capri XR2

Mon, Jun 5 2023

Just a year after the Mazda MX-5 Miata first went on sale in the United States, Ford's Mercury Division began selling a similarly-priced two-seat convertible here. This was the 1991-1994 Mercury Capri, and I've found an example of the hot-rod turbocharged version in a northeastern Colorado car graveyard. The Capri name has an illustrious history within the Ford Empire. First used on a Lincoln in 1952, it went on to serve as the name for a hardtop version of the early-1960s Ford Consul in the UK, then as the designation for a low-end trim level on the 1966-1967 Mercury Comet. Starting in the 1969 model year in Europe (1970 in North America), Ford began selling the best-known Capri of all: a sporty coupe based on the Cortina, sold through Mercury dealers in the United States but never badged as a Mercury here. Sales of that Capri halted here after 1978 (they continued through 1986 in Europe), but the Mercury Division then moved the name over to its version of the 1979-1986 Ford Mustang. After that, Ford Australia took the Capri name for a new Mazda 323-based sports car beginning in 1989. Then Dearborn decided that an Americanized version of the Australian Capri would be a success on this side of the Pacific, and left-hand-drive Capris began showing up in American Mercury showrooms in late 1990. Today's Junkyard Gem is one of those first-model-year cars, and it's the very rare turbocharged XR2 version. While this car was intended to be a competitor for the Miata, it's really that car's Mazda cousin. Both cars got their power from 1.6-liter versions of Mazda's versatile B engine, though the Capri had the same front-wheel-drive setup as its 323/Protege (and Escort/Tracer) platform siblings. At the same time, Ford was selling Kia-built Mazdas with Festiva (and, a bit later, Aspire) badging, alongside Mazda MX-6s with Probe badges. Just to make things interesting, American Mazda dealers were selling Ford Explorers as Mazda Navajos, while Rangers with Mazda badges followed starting in 1994. The 1990s were Mazda-riffic times at Ford! This car wasn't the first Australian-designed, Mazda-based Ford product sold in the United States. That honor belongs to the 1988-1989 Mercury Tracer, which was based on the same Mazda 323 platform as the Capri and built in Mexico. Later on, the Tracer remained a member of the 323 chassis family but was a nearly identical twin to its Ford Escort sibling.

Preposed class-action lawsuit targets 'defective' MyFord Touch

Tue, 16 Jul 2013

A national law firm, Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro LLP, has filed a proposed class action lawsuit whose presupposition is that MyFord Touch is defective. Specifically, the complaint states that the system - as well as the MyLincoln Touch and MyMercury Touch clones - often freeze, fail to respond to voice or touch commands and have issues connecting to mobile phones.
According to Hagens Berman managing partner Steve Berman, MyFord Touch is a theoretically "brilliant idea" that falls short in actual execution. Said Berman in a press release, "In reality, the system is fundamentally flawed, failing to reliably provide functionality, amounting to an inconvenience at best, and a serious safety issue at worst."
Other MFT issues enumerated within the 41-page filing include problems controlling the window defroster, rear-view camera and navigation system. The suit maintains that Ford is aware of the problem but has yet to submit a workable and acceptable solution to MFT customers. Scroll down if you'd like to read the full press release.
