1969 Cougar standard 351w 2v FMX automatic with De’ core interior. Very nice driving Cougar. You can cruise down the interstate at 75 mph with the AC on.

Full history: The Cougar was sold new at Adrian Ford mercury dealership in Adrian Michigan which is still in business (Dave Knapp Ford-Lincoln). The original buyer owned the local funeral home and purchased a new car every year. Kay worked at the dealership and fell in love with the Cougar when it was unloaded from the transporter. Knowing it would be traded in next year she made arrangements with her boss to start taking money out of her pay check to purchase the Cougar when it came back to the dealer the next year. In 1970 the Cougar was traded in and Kay completed the purchase. After purchasing the Cougar she made a trip to the local Discount tire store and had Cragar GT wheels with BFGoodrich tires installed. The same wheels she purchased are still on the Cougar. That same year she and her husband moved to southern Colorado taking the Cougar with them. Over time the Cougar went from a second car daily driver to a weekend pleasure car. She made several trips from Colorado to Michigan in the Cougar visiting family. In 2009 Kay moved back to Michigan to take care of her mother bring the Cougar with her. After the Cougar sitting idle for two years and she no long had the resources to take care of it. She decided to sell it to me in 2011. Kay kept a detailed log book on the Cougar documenting the original 68,686 miles when I purchased the Cougar. It currently has 71,692 miles.

Interior:  White DE ‘core with corinthian vinyl and white levant pattern. Seats re-upholstered in the 90’s. Dash, carpet, console headline door panels all original and nice condition. Three spoke rim blow steering wheel is  original and works. Realistic cassette stereo.

Exterior:  Original medium gold metallic paint was faded and repaint lavender in the 90’s. Paint quality about a 7 with 10 being show quality. Good weekend show driver condition. A couple of paint bubbles on the driver- side quarter wheel lip and a dent in the passenger-side upper front door. Some stone chips on the front and a scratch on the p-side upper rear quarter panel. Original white vinyl top in excellent condition. No signs of soft spots or rust under the vinyl top. Chrome bumpers and trim in very nice condition.

Mechanical: Engine runs good never removed or taken apart and doesn’t smoke. A little hesitation taking off when engine is cold. Could use a carb/choke kit installed. Installed valve cover gaskets in 20011 and a new water pump  this year. FMX automatic transmission  shifts correctly with no issues. 9” Ford rear end (open 3:00 ratio) no issues. Suspension nice and tight. Installed new KYB gas shocks and new tires in 2012. Power front disc brakes no issues. Power steering no issues. Installed one new power steering hose in 2013. Factory air conditioning with R-12 functions correctly and blows cold air. Heater and defrost system works correctly with no issues. Cowl vent is nice and doesn’t leak.  All Lights and headlight doors function correctly with no issues. Sequential tail lights function correctly. Sometimes the dash lights come on and off.

What it needs: The complete exhaust system needs replaced. The current system was pieced together by a Shop when Kay owned it. The mufflers are mis-matched and the system has a couple of leaks. I left it as is for the new own to install a system to their liking. At some point an automatic choke and carb kit should be install. Currently runs good the way it is, but a little hesitation when the engine is cold.

Impala SS vs. Marauder: Recalling Detroit’s muscle sedans

Thu, Apr 30 2020

Impala SS vs. Marauder — it was comparo that only really happened in theory. ChevyÂ’s muscle sedan ran from 1994-96, while MercuryÂ’s answer arrived in 2003 and only lasted until 2004. TheyÂ’re linked inextricably, as there were few options for powerful American sedans during that milquetoast period for enthusiasts. The debate was reignited recently among Autoblog editors when a pristine 1996 Chevy Impala SS with just 2,173 miles on the odometer hit the market on Bring a Trailer. Most of the staff favored the Impala for its sinister looks and said that it lived up to its billing as a legit muscle car. Nearly two-thirds of you agree. We ran an unscientific Twitter poll that generated 851 votes, 63.9 percent of which backed the Impala. Muscle sedans, take your pick: — Greg Migliore (@GregMigliore) April 14, 2020 Then and now enthusiasts felt the Impala was a more complete execution with guts. The Marauder, despite coming along later, felt more hacked together, according to prevailing sentiments. Why? On purpose and on paper theyÂ’re similar. The ImpalaÂ’s 5.7-liter LT1 V8 making 260 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque was impressive for a two-ton sedan in the mid-Â’90s. The Marauder was actually more powerful — its 4.6-liter V8 was rated at 302 hp and 318 lb-ft. The ImpalaÂ’s engine was also used in the C4 Corvette. The MarauderÂ’s mill was shared with the Mustang Mach 1. You can see why they resonated so deeply with Boomers longing for a bygone era and also captured the attention of coming-of-age Gen Xers. Car and DriverÂ’s staff gave the Marauder a lukewarm review back in ‘03, citing its solid handling and features, yet knocking the sedan for being slow off the line. In a Hemmings article appropriately called “Autopsy” from 2004, the ImpalaÂ’s stronger low-end torque and smooth shifting transmission earned praise, separating it from the more sluggish Mercury. All of this was captured in the carsÂ’ acceleration times, highlighting metrically the differences in their character. The Impala hit 60 miles per hour in 6.5 seconds, while the Marauder was a half-second slower, according to C/D testing. Other sites have them closer together, which reinforces the premise it really was the little things that separated these muscle cars. Both made the most of their genetics, riding on ancient platforms (FordÂ’s Panther and General MotorsÂ’ B-body) that preceded these cars by decades. Both had iconic names.

Automakers tussle over owners of 'orphan' makes

Thu, 10 May 2012

When General Motors put down several of its brands in recent years, it also let loose thousands of brand-loyal customers who will eventually need another car.
R.L. Polk Associates estimates there are more than 18 million cars from 16 discontinued makes on the road today. Those "orphan owners" have sales-hungry competitors seeing dollar signs. GM is offering Saturn owners $1,000 cash toward a Chevy Cruze, Cadillac CTS or a GMC Acadia. Ford is giving its Mercury lease customers a chance to get out of their contracts with no early-termination penalty and offering to waive six remaining payments if they drive off in a Ford or Lincoln.
Edmunds.com research shows the efforts are paying off somewhat for GM, with 39 percent of Pontiac owners, 37 percent of Hummer owners and 31 percent of Saturn owners taking delivery of another GM-branded vehicle. But that leaves as much as 69 percent of owners going elsewhere. Ford, Honda and Toyota seem to be attracting many former GM owners.

Ford Recalling 70k Escape and Mariner Hybrids for cooling issue

Fri, 12 Sep 2014

Ford is recalling about 70,209 examples of the 2005-2008 Ford Escape Hybrid and the 2006-2008 Mercury Mariner Hybrid because the cooling pumps for their hybrid systems could fail.
According to the company's defect notice, it's possible for the original "Motor Electronics Coolant (MEC) Pump" to wear out and fail, which would could cause the hybrid system to overheat. If this happens, the vehicle goes into a safety mode that takes away most or all of its power. However, braking and steering still operate normally. After cooling down, the affected models restart normally. The company says that it's not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this problem.
Ford will begin repairing the vehicles in late October, and dealers will be installing improved, brushless pumps on the affected models at no charge to owners. If drivers had their pumps fail before this recall, they can contact Ford for a possible reimbursement. Scroll down to read the recall announcement from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or download the full defect notice as a PDF, here.
