1969 Cougar standard 351w 2v FMX automatic with De’ core interior. Very nice driving Cougar. You can cruise down the interstate at 75 mph with the AC on. Full history: The Cougar was sold new at Adrian Ford mercury dealership in Adrian Michigan which is still in business (Dave Knapp Ford-Lincoln). The original buyer owned the local funeral home and purchased a new car every year. Kay worked at the dealership and fell in love with the Cougar when it was unloaded from the transporter. Knowing it would be traded in next year she made arrangements with her boss to start taking money out of her pay check to purchase the Cougar when it came back to the dealer the next year. In 1970 the Cougar was traded in and Kay completed the purchase. After purchasing the Cougar she made a trip to the local Discount tire store and had Cragar GT wheels with BFGoodrich tires installed. The same wheels she purchased are still on the Cougar. That same year she and her husband moved to southern Colorado taking the Cougar with them. Over time the Cougar went from a second car daily driver to a weekend pleasure car. She made several trips from Colorado to Michigan in the Cougar visiting family. In 2009 Kay moved back to Michigan to take care of her mother bring the Cougar with her. After the Cougar sitting idle for two years and she no long had the resources to take care of it. She decided to sell it to me in 2011. Kay kept a detailed log book on the Cougar documenting the original 68,686 miles when I purchased the Cougar. It currently has 71,692 miles. Interior: White DE ‘core with corinthian vinyl and white levant pattern. Seats re-upholstered in the 90’s. Dash, carpet, console headline door panels all original and nice condition. Three spoke rim blow steering wheel is original and works. Realistic cassette stereo. Exterior: Original medium gold metallic paint was faded and repaint lavender in the 90’s. Paint quality about a 7 with 10 being show quality. Good weekend show driver condition. A couple of paint bubbles on the driver- side quarter wheel lip and a dent in the passenger-side upper front door. Some stone chips on the front and a scratch on the p-side upper rear quarter panel. Original white vinyl top in excellent condition. No signs of soft spots or rust under the vinyl top. Chrome bumpers and trim in very nice condition. Mechanical: Engine runs good never removed or taken apart and doesn’t smoke. A little hesitation taking off when engine is cold. Could use a carb/choke kit installed. Installed valve cover gaskets in 20011 and a new water pump this year. FMX automatic transmission shifts correctly with no issues. 9” Ford rear end (open 3:00 ratio) no issues. Suspension nice and tight. Installed new KYB gas shocks and new tires in 2012. Power front disc brakes no issues. Power steering no issues. Installed one new power steering hose in 2013. Factory air conditioning with R-12 functions correctly and blows cold air. Heater and defrost system works correctly with no issues. Cowl vent is nice and doesn’t leak. All Lights and headlight doors function correctly with no issues. Sequential tail lights function correctly. Sometimes the dash lights come on and off. What it needs: The complete exhaust system needs replaced. The current system was pieced together by a Shop when Kay owned it. The mufflers are mis-matched and the system has a couple of leaks. I left it as is for the new own to install a system to their liking. At some point an automatic choke and carb kit should be install. Currently runs good the way it is, but a little hesitation when the engine is cold. |

What do you do with a fake Bugatti Veyron for $60k?
Tue, Mar 29 2016Replica cars are a challenging labor of love because builders spend countless hours recreating a vehicle that people immediately compare to the real thing. Perhaps, the person behind this Mercury Cougar-based Bugatti Veyron should look for another way to pass that time. The coupe is currently for sale on eBay Motors for $59,900. The builder deserves some credit because the fiberglass body looks acceptable in the photos from farther away. The car might even fool a few people from a distance. However, the devil is in the details, and the closer you look, the worse this gets. The side intakes are especially rough. The red interior is atrocious. It's essentially the Cougar's cabin but in an eye-searing shade accented with lots of fake carbon fiber. The seller's eBay Motors ad really tries to market the look, though. "You slide in to [sic] this extremely comfortable leather interior and you feel like your bank account just quadrupled in size," the listing says. Don't expect to win any top speed titles in this Veyron replica, either. Rather than a mid-mounted quad-turbo W16, a 3.0-liter V6 from a Mercury Sable sits at the front. Thanks to an upgraded intake and exhaust, the seller claims, "It doesn't sound like your grandmas [sic] Sable." We wish the seller the best of luck, but the asking price of nearly $60,000 is probably too optimistic. We would still think twice about buying it even after taking a zero off that figure, but at least this thing is fun to look at. Related Video:
Junkyard Gem: 1989 Mercury Tracer Four-Door Hatchback
Sat, Mar 6 2021During the life of the Mercury brand, which began in 1939 and ended in 2011, nearly every Mercury sold in North America was a cosmetically enhanced version of some Ford model also sold here. The exceptions to this rule came when Mercury sold Fords originally designed for non-North American markets, and for which no Ford-branded version existed on our shores. The 1991-1994 Capri was such a car, as was the 1999-2002 Cougar (the Mondeo-based Cougar was unique among all Mercuries in that no other cars in the sprawling Ford Empire shared its body). The 1970-1978 Capri was sold through Mercury dealers here, but never had Mercury badging. One of the rarest of all these Mercury cars was the first-generation Tracer, a Mazda design that made its way here via Australia. The bloodline of the Tracer goes back to the Mazda 323, the ancestor of today's Mazda3 and the platform used for all those US-market Ford Escorts of the 1990s. Starting in 1991, the Tracer name went onto badge-engineered Escorts, according to Mercury tradition, but the 1988-1989 Tracers were based on the Australian-market Ford KE Laser. Underneath all of those cars (as well as the early-1990s Capris) lived Mazda 323 running gear, of course. This one nearly made it to the 175,000-mile mark during its time on the road, which is respectable by the standards of 1980s Mazdas. With an automatic transmission transferring the 84 horses from its Mazda B6 engine to the front wheels, this car wouldn't have offered a great deal of driving excitement. 1989 Tracer buyers could choose between a two-door hatchback, a four-door hatchback, and a four-door wagon. Not many Americans hurried over to their local Mercury dealers to buy Tracers, despite the fact that the nearest Ford-badged identical twins were on the other side of the globe. Mercury still seemed relevant in the late 1980s, but its days were numbered. The actress driving the Tracer in this TV commercial seems to have the same deer-in-headlights facial expression of the hapless driver-training students in the 1968 AMC Rebel commercial.
More than 800,000 Fords recalled for faulty Takata airbags
Thu, Jan 12 2017The Basics: Ford is recalling about 816,000 Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles built in the US for faulty passenger-side Takata airbags. The affected vehicles were all built in North America, with 654,695 recalled vehicles in the US and 161,174 vehicles in Canada. A wide variety of cars, trucks, and SUVs are affected. This is a planned expansion of an earlier recall. 2005-09 and 2012 Ford Mustang 2005-06 Ford GT 2006-09 and 2012 Ford Fusion 2007-09 Ford Ranger 2007-09 Ford Edge 2006-09 and 2012 Lincoln Zephyr and Lincoln MKZ 2007-09 Lincoln MKX 2006-09 Mercury Milan The Problem: Like every other Takata recall, the problem rests with faulty airbags that can potentially expel shrapnel, injuring or killing vehicle occupants. Millions of vehicles from dozens of automakers are affected, so don't think that Ford is alone on this one. Injuries/Deaths: Ford stated in a press release that there have been no injuries or death linked to the vehicles in this recall. All in all, 11 deaths and 180 injuries across a variety of automakers have been linked to these Takata airbags. The fix: Ford will contact owners soon, and the affected vehicles will have their airbags replaced by a dealer at no additional charge. If you own one: Wait for contact from Ford, then head to the dealer to get a replacement. If you're wondering if your vehicle is affected, go to this Ford website and enter their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). The recall reference number is 17S01.
