Up for auction today is a very rare Cougar XR7 factory equipped with a 428 CID Cobra Jet. Obviously this is a project car. However, it is one of the most complete and original examples in existence. The 428 Cobra Jet is still bone stock and features the original C8O Distributor, Factory Air Cleaner Snorkel & Heat Shield, C8Z Radiator and original clutch fan. The transmission is the Cobra Jet Specific casting with the R Servo and Cast Iron Tail Shaft Housing. The 9" Differential is the original 'N' Case with 31 Spline Axles. My reserve price is less than what this drivetrain is worth. Add in the other Rare & Desirable Options like Air Conditioning, Power Windows, Tilt-Away Steering Column and the XR7 options and this car stands out even more.
I AM NOT PARTING THIS CAR OUT!!!!
Again, this is a project car. It has spent many years in storage and its time for a new owner and a restoration. The car sat in a garage largely neglected. During the storage the carburetor was removed by the previous owner and lost. I found 2 of the original carburetor nuts, the other 2 are MIA. The intake was left open so I do not feel safe trying to run the engine not knowing where the other 2 carb nuts are. The previous owner stated the car ran when parked, again I have never heard it run. Plan on a complete rebuild. I believe the original mileage to be 129k. The only components I can see that are not original on the engine are the carburetor and the fuel pump, otherwise it appears original down to the correct fasteners. The A/C system is complete.
The body has surface rust from sitting in a damp garage. The floors appear to be solid as do the frame rails and torque boxes. Plan on the typical issues of the breed such as door corners and lower quarter corners. There is some rust on the lower drop-offs and some minor scale on the trunk floor around the body grommets. At some point the car had a minor repair on the passenger door and quarter panel. From what I can see it the damage was minor and was repaired with about an 1/8" thick skim of filler that I was able to simply pull of the quarter panel. The grill assembly is in decent condition with one crack on the grill center and one on the driver's side panel. Overall a good grill for one of these cars. The passenger side fender extension molding was only sat in place for photos.
The interior is still the original and presents well but shows wear. Luckily it also appears to be original and un-touched like the rest of the car. It would be fine for a driver but not up to any show standards. The tilt column is nice and tight with a crisp lock engagement that is quite rare in these. The Rim Blow Steering Wheel appears to be in good condition with no visible cracks in the woodgrain portion. The lower dash has surface rust from sitting in a damp environment. All they typical interior issues you would address in a restoration.
Please take a look at the photos and give the ad a good read. If you still have any questions please call me at 425-308-0802 thanks Mike.

NHTSA closes rollaway investigation into 1.56M Ford SUVs
Mon, 11 Mar 2013It's taken four years of study, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has finally closed the books on its investigation into rollaway accusations surrounding 1.56-million Ford SUV models.
The probe, which centered on the 2002-2005 Ford Explorer, 2002-2005 Mercury Mountaineer and 2003-2005 Lincoln Aviator, ends without the federal agency calling for a recall. According to The Detroit News, the investigation was closed due to a "low number of complaints" - NHTSA documented 180 such complaints that resulted in 14 crashes and six minor injuries, but the number of incidents have been slowing. The suspected defect rate for the trucks' automatic transmissions was found to be 4.4 per 100,000 units, and the brake-shift interlock mechanism failure rate was judged to be even lower at 3.4 per 100k.
Ford recalling 370,000 Crown Vic, Grand Marquis and Town Car models
Fri, 30 Aug 2013The Detroit News is reporting that Ford will recall some 370,000 Crown Victoria (pictured), Mercury Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car vehicles from model years 2005 through 2011, for an issue regarding the lower intermediate steering shaft. 355,000 of the vehicles in question were sold in the US, with the other 15,000 sold in Canada.
The report indicates that corrosion of the lower intermediate steering shaft could cause a "loss of steering," presumably because of a partial or complete failure of the part. The report points out the dealers will inspect and replace the offending steering component for recalled cars, and may also secure a lower steering column bearing and replace the upper intermediate steering shaft as needed. The company is unaware of any reports of the faulty part causing any accidents or injuries.
Ford helpfully lists states in which corrosion is more likely to have taken place, mostly in the Snow Belt, as you might guess. Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, Wisconsin, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia are listed.
Junkyard Gem: 1973 Mercury Montego MX Brougham Sawzall Convertible Edition
Fri, Apr 21 2017You know how it goes— the weather is warm, you want to do some top-down driving, and you lack a proper convertible... but you do have a hooptie Detroit car on one side of the garage and a big ol' Sawzall on the other. Put the two together and you have a Sawzall Convertible, which generally lasts for about one summer before it gets scrapped. Here's a fine example of such a car, photographed in a San Francisco Bay Area self-service junkyard. Most Sawzall Convertibles (yes, it should be called a roadster, but nobody does that) have raw, ragged metal edges, or maybe duct tape over the stumps of the amputated pillars, but someone went to the trouble to weld nice smooth metal covers over the hackage on this one. The windshield is gone. Instead, the windshield frame is ringed by tongue depressors held in place by gooey roofing tar. No, we don't know why. The Montego MX Brougham was a hot-selling personal luxury coupe in its day, selling for $3,041 in 1973. That's just under $17,000 in 2017 dollars. It must have been fun, cruising this thing on Bay Area streets with no roof and a rattle-can spray-bomb job. This one has the optional 400-cubic-inch V8 engine, rated at 171 horsepower. What would this car's original buyer have thought of its fate? This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Manage Settings.
