I have my 1985 Mercury Capri RS 5.0 (5 Speed Manual Transmission) for sale. I purchased the vehicle in August of 2013 and at that time it had not been registered since 2002 in CA. I focused my attentioned on making the car CA legal first so here is what I did to make it CA legal.
1. Rebuilt Carb - $100
2. Had 3 new CA approved Cats (Catalytic Converters) professionally installed (Receipt Included - $900) - Also had them install Chrome tips.
3. Installed [All New] - oil / oil filter, spark plugs, spark plug wires (Ford Racing), Distributor (Stock, but have Billet MSD, can include), Ignition Module, Ignition Coil (Stock, have MSD), Water Pump, Speedo cable & Sensor.
4. Jetted down carb to pass smog.

*Mileage is not accurate

Note: I have owned two other 5.0's (84 Capri & 85 Capri) and I have to say this one has some real power... even after passing smog. The previous owner that sold me the vehicle (He owned it for 10 years) said he had been working on converting this to a race / track car. He rebuilt the engine, added a performance carb, etc..) Not sure all that was done, but this car has a punch to it. If you take it for a spin you will see what I mean. Sorry I don't know more... maybe someone with more experience will recognize some of the work that has been done.

I have also done a lot of work / collected parts on the interior and exterior. Here is a list:

Interior
1. New Carpet in Hatch and Cabin
2. New Headliner (Grey cloth)
3. Replaced sun visors with visors from another 85 Capri RS.
4. Refurbished and repainted entire dash. (Removed, repairs, repainted)
5. Changed speedometer from stock (85MPH to 200MPH)
6. Replaced Heater Core and Thermometer Sensor
7. Replaced Turn Signal Flasher
8. Purchased Vinyl Cases for T-Tops
9. Installed brand new Rockford Fosgate speakers (Dash and Rear)
10. Purchased / Installed NIB Stock Radio - VERY RARE - Works and Sounds Great!
11. Refurbished Door panels - new carpet on lower kick panel

Exterior
1. New Handle on driver side door (Have passenger handle as well)
2. Purchased Rare Turbo Hood Scoop (Capri Specific).
3. Replaced Installed Marchel Fog Lamps (Very hard to find)
4. New Hydraulic Lifters for Hatch

Parts
1. Extra set of Stock 10-hole Wheels
2. Misc Capri Specific parts (Molding, Light Markers...) Hard to find - will help with restoration.

My wife and I just had our second child and just don't have the time to keep investing in this.

Please call 408-813-7630 if you have any questions. Thanks! Nathan

NOTE: Payment is due 10 days after close of auction.

Note made on 7/9/2014: Thank you for all the interest and questions regarding the vehicle. I have had a few people ask about the actual mileage of the vehicle. Here is what I know...

As I mentioned in the original description, the posted mileage of 1,326 is not accurate. This is due in part to changing out the original speedometer with the 200MPH speedometer. The mileage read 20,710 when I removed the original speedometer. However, when I purchased the vehicle the speedometer was not functioning, so in turn the odometer wasn't functioning due to the gear being stripped. I changed the gear, speedometer sensor and speedo cable (I believe the gear was all the was necessary, but went ahead and changed everything else) and got it working when I installed the 200mph speedometer. Also, the original and replacement speedometers rollover every 100,000 miles so you can't really know how many times if any it rolled over. Another thing to note is the previous owner said that he rebuilt the engine. He said that it had approximately 20,000 miles on the engine since the rebuild when I bought it in August of 2013. I have put about 4,000 miles on the car since I purchased. Sorry I don't know anything more specific. Hope this helps.

Has the Mercury Marauder gotten better with age?

Fri, Oct 23 2015

In the early 2000s Mercury desperately wanted to develop some edge for its brand – seemingly stuck between a quasi-premium, quasi-performance space in the Ford Universe. The Marauder is perhaps the most famous of the vehicles that resulted from those efforts, and is rapidly approaching Modern Classic status, today. Effectively a murdered out Grand Marquis with some updated trim pieces – what are company parts bins for, if not raiding? – the Marauder looked convincingly like a bad guy car. The 4.6-liter V8 under its hood that had been breathed on by engineers for a little more power, kicking out 302 horsepower and 318 pound-feet of torque from the factory. Not exactly Ferrari-baiting numbers, but it'd give your local cop's car a run for its money. Being a wild child of the last decade, of course our friends at MotorWeek had it on the program. What better way to test your mean-mugging muscle sedan than with John Davis' tanned and steady hands?

Junkyard Gem: 1979 Mercury Marquis 2-Door Sedan

Sun, Jul 25 2021

As the creator of the now-much-overused term "Malaise Era" (which I say started in 1973 and ended in 1983, full stop), I have a certain affection for the big two-door Detroit cars of the late 1970s. When such a car is built on the very first model year of Ford's long-lived Panther platform and I find one in a junkyard, I must document it. The 1979 Mercury Marquis is such a car, and this one was found in a San Francisco Bay Area self-service yard last month. Since Ford built the Grand Marquis all the way through the demise of the Panther platform— and Mercury itself— in 2011, it's easy for us to forget that the model name started out as just the plain old Marquis, back in the 1967 model year, with the Grand appellation used for the car's top trim level. While today's Junkyard Gem has some of the features of the Grand Marquis and Marquis Brougham trim levels for 1979 (notably the padded vinyl landau roof and power windows), it lacks the huge chrome lower-body moldings of those cars. Instead, it's a regular Marquis 2-door sedan with a big load of expensive options. That landau roof has suffered greatly from its decades beneath the vinyl-disintegrating California sun. The Panther platform was a big technological upgrade from the late-1950s-vintage chassis technology of full-sized Fords of the 1960s and 1970s, and it stayed in front-line service in much the same form through 2011. Though its ride and handling were much improved, the 1979 Marquis was quite a bit smaller than its predecessors, and that caused some grumbling among Mercury shoppers. Some ham-handed junkyard shoppers really tore up the interior of this car while extracting a few bits and pieces, but we can still admire the Pine Green pleather of the glorious Twin Comfort Lounge front seats. You had two engine choices when buying a new '79 Marquis: the base 302-cubic-inch (5.0-liter) Windsor V8 making 129 horsepower or the optional 351-cubic-inch (5.8-liter) Windsor V8 rated at 138 horsepower. This one appears to be the 351, the same engine as had been swapped into the pizza-delivery Mercury I drove in the middle 1980s. New cars sold in California around this time had these giant emissions-numbers stickers on the side glass. Later, they went on the underside of the hood.

NHTSA and Ford investigating steering issues in Crown Vic, Grand Marquis and Marauder

Fri, 11 Jul 2014

There may be more steering woes for the Ford Crown Victoria. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened a preliminary evaluation into the Crown Vic and Mercury Grand Marquis from the 2004 to 2007 model years and the Mercury Marauder for the 2004 and 2005 model years because the steering shaft can jam. The issue could potentially affect an estimated 500,000 vehicles.
According to the regulator, there is a possibility that the driver's side heat shield for the exhaust manifold can rust, dislodge, and then wedge into the steering shaft. If this occurs, it leads to a situation where the driver can no longer control the car.
NHTSA has received five complaints of this happening, including one alleged case with an injury. In that situation, the car was driving onto the highway, lost control and rolled over. One occupant was hurt in the accident.
